Steve’s story about starting in 2nd reminded me of my old friend Walter. Born in the 1890s , so didn’t really grow up w/ cars . He drove everywhere in 2nd , kept the revs up always , and controlled his speed w/ the clutch . We lived on a small island , so he never went far (just store and home , really ) He replaced the clutch quite often . He was British and was in both big wars . I have a hunch he learned to drive on some sort of tracked vehicle . There was always a cloud of smoke around the car .A wonderful guy .
ReplyThe ‘Tom Hanks’ drink maybe a little more glitzy with champagne but tastes nice with a sweet white wine too. There is already spritz in the soda. Or try red wine. In Austria it’s very popular to mix beer and soda. Very refreshing and easy on the alcohol.
ReplyMy input on the stick shift driving. If one needs to start uphill the handbrake helps a lot. Foot on the gas, foot on the clutch, first gear. As you release the clutch and feel the car is pulling release the handbrake. There will be no rolling back.
I need him to teach me how to drive. Better than trying to learn in a 1974 GMC 3/4 tonne pickup with 3 people in the cab and no elbow room and with a full load of straw on the truck for my Mom’s horse. And my Dad yelling at me to put down the clutch and 75 other commands and then stomping on my foot to make sure the clutch was indeed down. Only to get passed and beat by the neighbors at the barn. Then made fun of once they realized it was me driving and not my Mom or Dad. At least I didn’t back into a parked 18 wheeler, and then say I didn’t see it….MOM! lol! I miss those days. lol!
ReplyThe best thing about knowing how to drive with a manual transmission is that it’s like riding a bike. You never forget how.
ReplyThe intros were taped at a different time….the levels of the drinks change when the interview resumes.
Reply00:08 What’s going on with the editing here? (Look at the drinks.)
ReplyThat scene from “A man called Otto” is actually funny and touching at the same time. “You gave birth to two children, you learned a new language, you will have no problem learning how to drive”. Can’t wait to watch the movie!
ReplyMean while…. Europeans wonder how people get their licence without learning to drive…. learning driving using your gear is the standard here… it does explain the constant break lights in the mountains in the US… when you’ve not learned to use your gears.
Replyi dunno. 99 percent of americans only drive automatic. but if you go down to mexico and want to rent a car, you better know how to drive a stick.
ReplyGrumpy old people are my favourite people
ReplyI learned in a Jeep with a clutch in the early 90s
ReplyI’m the Otto in my neighborhood. LOL
Replyyeah, it’s the backward drift for a moment when you’re on a steep icy hill as you’re about to engage first — that’s why you want to drive stick.
ReplyAmen about driving stick! Sooooo much better….
ReplyI loved the book, will love Tom in it for sure. Don’t expect it to be copy, but it will be good
ReplyLove Tom Hanks. However the driving scene kinda pissed me off. Don’t need to be a genius to drive stick. I learned at 17 first day of college. Did I think I would die? Yes . Still alive to tell the tale and I love you Hankenstien!!! Whoo whoo whoo!
