The problem in Florida is DeSantis. It isn’t any of the things he wants to ban. When one makes a big deal about something, it gains more attention than it should. One cannot enforce morality. If that were possible, DeSantis wouldn’t be Governor!

Terrible discussion with lots of vague or even missing words, i’m not even sure what position Bill was stating so not sure if they were agreeing or disagreeing. Exactly the kind of discussion that Trump likes.

Bruni’s Crack to Batya at the end was plain nasty and betrayed his carefully constructed pleasant persona.

Parents have always had a say in what’s taught. It’s up to them as to how much they want to get involved. The Republicans are once again distorting the truth to fit what they want.

“Gender identity” shouldn’t be taught at all in public schools as it’s not empirically based. Akin to teaching kids that their relationship to Jesus is core to their identities.

I still very much like Bill and think he’s done great things for free thinking and reason in the idiot nation, but I see a sad change in his thinking and those who influence him that is beginning to scare me.

Pleaseeeeeeeee. Parents can impart their values on the children without the government’s say so. It’s like saying the schools need to teach religion. Why can’t parents just take their children to church. It’s just another distraction (squirrel) to keep the masses in line.

Let’s not take our eye off the ball of all the other evil going on in the world besides Putin. I don’t mean to specifically pick on Batya Ungar-Sargon, but wearing that Star of David necklace just reminds me of the evil the Israeli government has been doing to the Palestinians for about four decades now. Cutting off their electricity, halting shipments of food, taking over their land little by little with more settlements appearing by the day…I know there will be some idiot out there who can’t discern between annihilation and real antisemitism so go ahead and get it out of the way by calling me antisemitic. The former is what’s really going on in that part of the world because the Israelis in power (and many Israeli citizens as well) have this Zionist God complex that the whole area is theirs because it was promised to them, even though they weren’t the first race/ethnicity/culture there from the start. The Israelis are slowing annihilating any semblance of Palestinian history as the years progress and we’re not allowed to talk about it, especially in this country because the Israeli lobby is so far up the ass of our own government it’s ludicrous.

If a student doesn’t tell their parents they’re LGBT+ or questioning their identity, there’s a reason for that. Confidentially still applies to minors when it comes to informing parents about what’s discussed in sessions. “Protecting children” has always been an excuse for Republicans to launder their bigotry when it comes to policy. Laws like this aren’t going to make the lives of students better. Their intention is to create a hostile environment for LGBT+ students.

Sexual orientation and gender identity isn’t sex. And this bill makes K-3 forbidden to talk about AT ALL and places restrictions on 4-12 to “appropriate to state standards” which who knows what they are. It doesn’t just apply to K through 3. It applies to 17 year old seniors in high school too.

If a third grader asks the teacher “why was Alan Turing jailed?” The teacher can’t answer that question. If a gay kid is beaten up on the playground the teacher is legally barred from saying “now class, some people have different orientations and that doesn’t make them bad.” If some kid comes to a teacher “help my dad hits me when I act a certain way but I think I might be gay” the teacher is legally required to tell that parent.

The fact that there are such people in the world is forbidden knowledge. You can’t tell 8 year olds that non-straight people even exist. That’s weird, like outlawing history class. It’s clearly a culture war of: getting out of something that doesn’t and may never exist and ensuring that they have free reign to shape their children’s minds about certain topics (like religion) before a fact-based liberal world can compete with those ideas on equal footing.
