ReplyI think what Bill doesn’t get is, that nobody takes the side of Hamas, but rather points out, that while this conflict is bad for everybody, it is disproportionatly bad for palestinians, who suffer two-fold, from the conflict itself and of the Hams tyranny. If you look t the bodycount, there are so much more palestinians than israelis and I don’t want to say, that there should be more israelis who die, there should be less casualties. But Israel has clearly the agency to respond in a way to hamas agressions in a way, that less palestinian civilians die. Hamas isn’t acting in favor of the palestinian people, the palestinian people are disenfranchised twofold.

1. the dispute is not between Jews and Arabs as Maher is continuously stating, it is between Zionists and Palestinians who happened to be Muslims, Christians and Jews ( Samaritan Jews who are incidentally not recognized and hated by Zionists). by the way there are non Zionist Jews who are against Zionism and the practices of Israel.

The facts are being purposely mixed over here, we have 3 words which is misused to deliberately confuse the masses, the words are Jews, Israelites and Zionists. to educate Maher on the subject, they all different, Jews came from Judaism and it was giving to those who believed in the teaching of Moses. Israelites are those who were during the kingdom of Israel, and Zionist is a movement created in 1895 in the pursuit of finding a home land for Israelites.
4. maher stupid stand on the legitimacy of Israel is a profound hypocrisy. Maher is anti religion, however on this subject is pro religion, Israel claims it’s legitimacy from the bible, however there is nothing factual on the ground to prove that other than what is written in the Bible. there are 3 ironies here, one that Zionist, Israelites and Jews do not believe or recognize the Bible. two, the book of the Jews bans Jews from creating a country. three, Maher is anti religion.
5. On the issue of Israel being a democracy and the way they treat Arabs citizens, did any one including Maher read the constitution of Israel? the country is a Jewish Zionist States which is their to protect and take care of Zionists’Jews, Arabs citizens happened to be there and they must put up with the situation and reflect that Israel is a democracy when in fact its a fake democracy.
6. On the issue of Hamas, Maher is a big liar on this subject. this is not a war between 2 countries. there are indigenous inhabitant of the land who are fighting for their existence, their rights, their dignity and their land against an occupier which is ruthless, racist, criminal, and many other adjectives. if what Maher’s lies about Hamas is true, still it does not matter, they have the right to fight the occupier according to the charters of the UN and international laws.
I am sure Bill Maher is smarter than the stupidity he shows on his program or may be not, however he chooses to be this way for financial gains. he basically sells his soul to the highest bidder.

Those in Lebanon are not allowed to even work in Lebanon or own land there even if they are 3rd generation born there! ReplyBut no one here is discussing is that the history of the land is now irrelevant. The decisions of former leaders is now irrelevant. The only tagline since 1947 that remains true is that both peoples have a right to exist without persecution. Both groups have alternatively been oppressors and both have alternatively committed atrocities. The mentality that needs to change right now is that the ruling hardliners for each group need to stop pretending that the land is their exclusively. It will be impossible to draw lines for reasonable contiguous boarders because they share so many mutual religious and cultural ties to many regions that they will never be able to agree on it. When both sides can agree that Israel/Palestine is not the property of either side then they can move forward.

They often talk about “natural rights” or “god-given rights”… and I am a Christian who believes that Jehovah did design us to have some rights in the beginning but we have fallen.
When the wheel was invented the guy, maybe a woman, who invented it did not say to his neighbour who copied him… “Hey I have intellectual property rights to this invention for 20 years, so if you are going to make a wheel you need to pay me a royalty!”
There are no inherent rights. The Aztecs in Mexico had the “god-given” right to human sacrifice.
There were no Geneva Convention rules of war in the past… just like there was no intellectual property rights. Everybody conquering everybody else’s land was something that happened all the time.
I think a lot about intellectual property rights. Yes I do believe they should exist and they’re good for society and people can recoup the costs of their research or work hours creating art or entertainment.
But any thinking person does not think I have the right to copy Viagra one day after it goes on the market, and any thinking person does not believe Pfizer should have a monopoly after 20 years.
There’s some debate about which rights should exist… but essentially we have rights because the vast majority of people believe in a certain right.
In the past people did not believe in the rights of Nations the same way there were no intellectual property rights.

About the civilian casualties, the comparison between deciding to put one main israeli base in a city, to hamas obsession for firing rockets “from civilians, on civilians” and making it impossible to stop the rocket fire without harming civilians. While israel builds iron dome to protect civilians and gives warnings to uninvolved civilians to get out of harm’s way, hamas is using them as human shields,and if they die that’s some good PR points right? They are evil, and sadly the world’s eagerness to make israel the villian only makes them continue and further their wicked ways.
I’d like to see Bill’s face when native Americans show up to kick him out of his home because they have been there for thousands of years before his ancestors arrived. ReplyI think it’s interesting that Maher starts the segment off by claiming that people don’t know the history and that the left wants to be unnuanced, but then he basically settles on a one-sided non-nuanced argument himself. The more interesting conversation with the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is not who’s more right, but how you’re going to get two opposing sides, both with a mountain of history and context fueling their decisions, to reconcile that they both want to live in the region and will need to coexist.
Also, I’m a little curious where he thinks all these need-to-learn-more young people got their knowledge ethic, because it seems to me like our shift away from nuance and toward such binary thinking isn’t isolated to this current generation …

Then after a long historical processes you got kicked out and the land changed hands. This was how the world works. But in the modern times, there is something called human rights. There was no human rights in ancient times so you do whatever the hell you want when you are a victor. But even in the eyes of the world, Israel continues to mistreat the Palestinians today. Israel’s goal is to turn Palestine back into Israel, despite human rights, despite modernity, despite the historical processes, and even if it requires a genocide, literally or culturally both. if you are going to say that we have to look at the history of Palestine,
then as an avowed agnostic, I do not think you can expect us to believe that you accept the bible as history, which it isn’t. There have been semitic(which does not mean jewish) people in that part of the world since “civilization” began. It has had armies pillaging all over it for almost as long.
The Kingdom of Judea, which is used to justify Israel’s “right” to the land of Palestine,
was dismantled by the Romans in the 1st century CE. 2 thousand years ago. That does not mean that all the jews then left the area. They didn’t. Not even a minority of them left. They just accepted that
a king whom most of them found overbearing and taxed them at whim, was replaced by a power that still did that too, but was a bit more distant, and was perceived as more even handed and reasonable. There were those who resisted to their dying, but it didn’t work out. Suffice it to say that the Kingdom of Judea ceased to be what it was, and stayed absent from that area for 1,848 years;
a little beyond the statute of limitations for possession. In any court of law, including roman courts.
Let me provide a parallel. If say, the Indigenous people, whom I think we agree were the possessors of the territory you currently abide in, were to suddenly find a champion or two in say, China and the EU,
