Wasn’t it Charles Mingus that stated something along the lines that your mistakes are my treasures is what he told his band players.. I think it’s perfectly okay to take whatever liberties with the tempo or just let it drop.. sometimes silence is integral.. and some people just want you to sing and play so softly that they can barely hear you.. and you should until they beg for more

ReplyMark Knopfler has a funny story of when he played Sultans of Swing one night and the crowd didnt seem pleased. He was speaking with his wife that night about it and she asked “did you play the twiddly bits?” He realized that he had not played the guitar solo at the very end. It’s important to give your fans the same melodies they grew up with.

Replyit is weird… JT gets signed at Apple after an ok from Paul and George… Paul put ” Til There Was You” from the Music Man. a Showtune. Then Paul Beatles recorded A Taste of Honey ..from a film. The early Beatles were covering Little Richard.. So now JT is doing American Songbook standards… after Bennett and Rod Stewart. et al.
