Landlords try to dig out all money possible, unless you can record and document every aspect of finding the place, renting it, how you leave it and what it was already like, it’s just left impossible to deal with even on a legal front.
ReplyBut even so, many tenants can’t afford to take them to court, or can’t afford to fight them in court if the landlord is the one trying to get at them through civil court or similar, it’s absurd and bleeding the working class dry, at best, there will be another surge in the housing crisis with an exorbitant amount of homeless imo, and they will no longer have tenants to squeeze every last penny out of.
I think one of the problems is our love of single family zoning.
ReplyWhen is the GSA going to catch up?
ReplyUltimative freedom – USA. Please stop calling whatever you have over there, a democracy. Was it really the people to elected who should be in power, guess those elected people would ensure this would never happen. An example. Well, where I live, in Europe, in the EU. Where we have the power to say no, and demand everybody rights to live.
ReplyJohn needs to do an episode about land taxes on farmers and ranchers. My family had to pay the federal government almost $2,000,000 in property taxes for our sheep and cattle ranch. This left us with a net income so low we actually count as being below the poverty line. You all get fat eating our beef and mutton and we get poorer every year.
ReplyI honestly find nothing funny about this…
ReplyMy favorite weekly dose of pure, seething fury! Thanks, John and crew
ReplyCurrently going through this myself in the worst possible state Texas
ReplyI’m from south africa. Yes our constitution says you have a right to housing, but that doesn’t mean everyone has free housing. In fact just because we have a right to housing, doesn’t mean that landlords can’t charge you rent. So just because we have the right on paper doesn’t mean it’s actually implemented in any meaningful way. We have homeless people everywhere but they have the right to a house. Doesn’t make sense does it.
ReplyMy advice to any young people reading this is to leave America ASAP and go to school in Europe (not the UK) and set up a life there. I wish I would’ve when I had just moved to NYC 20 years ago. It’s not worth it here. You’ll be much happier and healthier in a country that gives a damn about it’s society.
Replymy friend lives in a van. he says he is ready to get radicalized
ReplyJust a reminder to anyone watching, you can eat your landlord.
ReplyWow. That lawyer, Matthew Chase, is completely unhinged. I wrote the Missouri State Bar Association and complained about his conduct, and would urge everyone to do so.
Replycapitalism is selling your soul. eventually this issue will create massive social disruption.
Reply6:05. That is a colossal asshole. However, the world, not just America, is full of such assholes. Always has been, always will be. Don’t worry, karma will get them. Or we might start thinking about how society should actually work and then train and school our offspring to that.
ReplyFirst we need a crackdown on rents : rents at cost only, nationalize all greed and profit oriented landlords, democratically controlled by tenants, employees and trade unions, build new affordable housing, then we need to set our sights on Banks and Core Industries. Also to fight Inflation we need a price cap for food and drink.
ReplyJohn Oliver it makes me so happy when you do episodes like this. Speaking the truth for so many people who r going through it and have no voice.
ReplyI was so happy for you to bring this up but at the same time fighting back the tears, because I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. i just spent 3 years living in my car, and now that I’m FINALLY in an apartment I spend almost 100 % of my income on rent. The stress each month to come up with that money is overwhelming. The stress of possibly ending up back in my car, is crippling. And the thought of being ostracized for living in my car again makes me prefer death.
