ReplyFact check: actually it was two months not two years before enslaved people in Texas knew they were free. If you’re thinking of the emancipation proclamation two years before, many enslaved and non enslaved people knew of the proclamation within months as it was published and discussed in newspapers across the country

Replymy question Is “Is “celebrate” even the correct word for all Americans” obviously it is a day of celebration for black people but it seems like more a day that White people should “honor”. As a white person I am aware of how important the day is, but I feel like it would be inappropriate for me to throw a juneteenth party or something, whereas a black person choosing to throw a juneteenth party would make perfect sense to me.
