ReplyDuring class all the students have the same curriculum.
ReplyThe gifted students go to a special class away from the other students for a few hours a week or after school. They also get way more homework and projects.

ReplyI had a great maths teacher as a kid, at the end of every double lesson he would set an exercise on the stuff just covered in the lesson mixed with stuff we had covered up until then, with the carrot of ‘we could all leave after everyone had handed it in’, so the smart kids would finish quickly and then go round the class and help the not so smart so we all finished a bit early (only a few minutes but it worked as an incentive). The smart kids learned more by having to figuring out a way to explain it to other kids and the other kids benefited by having it explained to them from the point of view of a kid. Every single kid in the class of 25 passed their O Level a year early and we all took the OS level the following year instead of the O.

ReplyThe 2020 Census says that Seattle is 67% white… so if only 52% of the “gifted” kids were white, they were one of the under-represented groups. Hooray for DEI! 😀
ReplyI went to a very large high school at a time and place when and where everything was totally homogenous… no advanced placement or “gifted” classes of any kind that I was aware of. In fact I was bored into a straight C (2.0ish) grade point average there. On the other hand, I did graduate a year early… almost two years early… with something like 52 class credits where only 36 were required. But what would a 16 year old HS graduate do? It was bad enough being a 17 year old grad (besides get a fake license to get a decent paying construction job… supposed to be 18 YO.)
Four years later when I finally decided to go to college, to get in at all I first had to take remedial courses for things they didn’t bother teaching us in HS… like English and writing. I was already a voracious reader, which helped significantly.
Once I got into college, it was a totally different story. No longer bored, I graduated with a 3.6 GPA (partly because of one prof. who flunked me even though I had dropped her course due to a schedule conflict).
Mediocrity in public schools is nothing new. My 8th grade science teacher showed a whole lot of movies… WWII documentaries, driving instructions (to 13 year olds?), and even “Reefer Madness”… so he could sit and sip his bourbon in the back of the class. Yes, there were a few truly great teachers… but they were mostly wasted in the public system.
