I think the problem about absolute free speech is that nobody, and no nation as a whole is responsible enough to OWN their words at all times with complete conviction, AND be empathetic enough to troubleshoot the meaning of things being said in order to be rational enough to hol dback before acting. That’s kinda where the free-speech argument falls flat. If one group mongers hateful speech and overpowers others, and has the backing of say…a government…..and that over time becomes a series of LAWS [as what is law but maxims in WORD FORM….speech form……No I think the absolutism of free speech doesn’t practically work. It’s nice to think that in one’s delusional dreams the nation will wake up and suddenly be able to handle their shit, I doubt it. Absolute freedom of speech is when EVERYBODY has the same point of view, because you can saw what you want and no issues will come of it. Absolute free speech is as useless as having speech utterly legislated, as on one hand it causes the party of speech to controlled by ohters and freedom dies of strangulation, while absolute free speech causes others to literally strangle each other.

Antisemitism on elite college campuses has been rampant from inception of those colleges. When I was in highschool in the 70’s a friend applied to Harvard but was rejected. He was accepted to Yale. The joke back then was Harvard had already met it’s quota of Jewish student admissions but apparently Yale had not. After hearing the testimony of these university president’s, it would surprise me if that admissions quota was still in practice.

Hillary Clinton once called Trump supporters “a basket of deplorables.” This caused great outrage among Trump supporters, and was seen as being in poor taste by many. Recently, Trump has called for “rooting out the Communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs who live like vermin within the confines of our country.” Clinton was making an observation, but there was no implicit threat. Is there a threat implicit in Trump’s words? What does “root out” mean? And who will be defining these groups? And once they are “rooted out”, what will be done with them?

The cure to foolish speech is intelligent speech. Let a fool spout off all day on his soapbox, he’ll only expose himself as a fraud.
The work of fighting stupid ideas will never end, as the well of stupid is bottomless.

One major problem is each thinking their opinion holds weight.
Narcissism with social media has been out of control for some time.
    What happened to sources?
Systemic issues exist but it seems one only has to point and say bullshit for bunches to hop along in agreement, with merely I like that person being the reason to agree.
    See tbe comments for proof

As far as throwing people in jail? When the speech explicitly (and sometimes implicitly depending on the situation e.g. a President tells a riled-up crowd to march to the capital and show strength) calls for violence.

My problem with free speech is the absolute lying in politics.

Identity politics is inherently corrupt. It is bought and sold. It’s about how to be sexist without being sexist, racist without being racist, and bigoted without being bigoted. Identity politics doesn’t mention classism, because it’s funded by the owning class.

Wasn’t long ago when Maher & Co. were making fun of conservatives who were being chased off campuses across the country. Now it’s Jews and so the world is ending.
