We need more indigenous cooperatives so they can help empower themselves. Cooperatives are run by and for members, and so they take care of their members better. Worker cooperatives also share profits so money is distributed more equally and they often put a pay ratio cap in place. They can empower racial minorities, women, LBGT people, and people facing poverty by giving them a voice. Cooperatives are a form of economic democracy.
Missionaries came out of their own time and pockets to help out. That’s all. Shouldn’t turn your back to someone who’s spending all of their time and money to help you out. I do see her point, but let’s not trash Missionaries. They do incredible work and don’t get paid for it
Outsiders coming in and telling people how to fix their problems is incredibly insulting and egocentric!
These people don’t have these problems because they are ignorant. The challenges resulted from generations of oppression, exploitation, and the resulting poverty. They understand the complexities of their problems (and thus the solutions) better than anyone. What they may require is resources to enact those solutions.
Best lesson I was taught when I first became involved in human rights work/advocacy: Shut up, listen, and then ask, “How can I help you accomplish your goals?”
The people on the outside give the view THEY want to see. The view on the inside are the feeling and emotions.
People on the outside are more inclined to want to be saviors and hero’s then actually try to fix the problems or find solutions. I’m not saying the rent aren’t those who don’t. But those people help from the inside and work out. They don’t want the attention and praise. They are usually behind the scenes low profile. Help these people with no reward to yourself with pure selfless intent and theeeeeen you’re actually helping them. Because it stays about them and not you.
“we don’t NEED missionaries”!!! 🎉
Replyshe said it much nicer than I would!! like.. get your heinous religion away from us!!!
