Texas’s new abortion law, SB8, is the most restrictive in the country. Daily Show senior producer Allison MacDonald and Texas OB-GYN and abortion provider Dr. Ghazaleh Moayedi join host Roy Wood Jr. to discuss the current state of the Texas abortion ban, the common misconceptions surrounding abortion, why banning abortions isn’t an effective (or safe) way to lower the abortion rate, and the conversations men should be having about abortions.

Beyond the Scenes is one of the best things about the Daily Show these days. Roy Wood Jr. always asks great questions, and the guests are always incredibly insightful and interesting. Dr. Moayedi and Ms. MacDonald are no exception. Thank you for covering this subject with the appropriate mix of gravitas and humor.

How can your protest abortions after you get one?

The only thing I could find humor in is making fun of the monstrous politicians who would support such bans. They deserve ridicule for their crimes against humanity even if those crimes are technically legal. This is about the health and safety of women and their right to safely terminate a pregnancy that is either unwanted or causing unforeseen medical complications.

We need a lawyer who’s a talented troll. Who can sue anti abortionists by tricking them into “helping” a woman get an abortion. The quality of evidence required seems so low it should be easy!

If a private citizen sues you & in the process violates your constitutionally guaranteed rights, you could counter-sue them with criminal penalty. It’d be an interesting court case, someone should push the issue.

People should start enundating the systrm with bogus calls of Republican lawmakers assisting with abortions so that they can see how ridiculous the law is.

Unfortunately like any issue, facts will not make a difference to people who choose to be and stay ignorant and base their stance on feelings, beliefs and indoctrinations. They either just don’t care about and dismiss the facts because they want their way or delude themselves into believing the facts are lies. It’s people who claim they love America and the right to freedom, but on their terms and not for anyone who doesn’t think and live like they do. They demand that the government step in and control women’s reproductive rights, yet turn around and start stomping their feet and whining like babies claiming they don’t trust or want government “telling us what to do” when it comes to getting a vaccine. You know, that helps save lives. The hypocrisy is astounding.

Let’s just _clarify_ something that keeps getting _obscured_ in all this. These restrictions on abortion _overall_ become gradually _less_ effective the wealthier the woman who happens to be pregnant. A woman in Texas who is pregnant and cannot _afford_ to travel is, of course, unavoidably affected by this law, but a woman who is pregnant who travels _regularly_ outside of Texas has no reason to pay this law _any_ mind if she decides she wants an abortion. She can just get it while she’s in a jurisdiction where this law does not _apply._ So once again (as is all too typically the case), you’re not targeting abortion _in general,_ so much as abortion for the _poor._

I’ve loved Ray’s funny bones,,,but his seriousness is through the roof. 10 stars for the Doc. Whatever they’re paying her isn’t enough. Give Allison a raise, too.

I had so much trouble even getting birth control in Texas and it wasn’t for preventing pregnancy, I needed the meds for my health. Abortion IS HEALTHCARE leave our bodies to us.

6 weeks pregnant includes two weeks where the person wasn’t even pregnant, they’re technically only 4 weeks post egg fertilization. So many of us have miscarriages at or around that time and think it’s just a late period, it’s not a human until it breathes life PER THE BIBLE. why are they using religion that doesn’t support their bullpuckey?!

I feel what is going to make Texas change their minds, is when all those women who can’t or don’t want the child utilizes the “Safe Haven” law & fill up hospitals & fire stations, and then doctors and fire personnel will complain they haven’t anywhere to take or place these babies.

The producer pointing out that having a baby has made her more pro-choice is my exact experience. While I was pregnant with my first child (who I didn’t know I was pregnant with until I was 6 weeks along, even though we were trying to get pregnant) I realized that if I was being forced to go through that, it would be literal torture. It’s been 5 1/2 years since then and my body has changed drastically since then: 40 lbs average heavier, my hips are loose, my core is destroyed, and I have PPD and anxiety to name a few. All of those things would still be true, even if I just “put the baby up for adoption.” Luckily, I have insurance and can afford the medication I need to help me function
