Misogyny! Refusing abortion is femicide, a tenet of conservative religious fanaticism!

The fear comes from not being believed as a black woman. The fear comes from knowing that doctors, especially white doctors believe black woman have a higher pain tolerance. Fear comes from the statistics of black women dying during or from childbirth

Many aspects of gestation and birth are *dangerous.* Even if all goes well, it takes our body at least a year to recover.

I am not sure why he wouldn’t know the other factors, such as through history, giving birth was a major cause of death for women. We’ve advanced our technology so the chances are much, much slimmer but are still very real. A healthy amount of fear, one that doesn’t impede your abilities, is a great trait that can focus you. Professionals that I’d want in a situation like that. Still love the TDS, shame H. Minhaj lost the contract over that NYer article.

He’s not wrong. Fear is being used in other issues to control/motivate people in the desired direction. In most instances to get people to vote in ways against their own best interests.

I know people aren’t going to like this, but this is the most condescending thing anybody can say. It’s truly truly heroic that this man is telling women that they don’t need to be afraid of childbirth. I mean it’s never something that he’s physically going to have to experience. But you know, don’t worry about it. The fact that he’s a doctor is kind of irrelevant. Unless you experience something firsthand, you don’t have the right to tell someone not to be afraid. You can try to ease their fears but telling them being afraid is ridiculous or unnecessary is very condescending.

The fact of the matter is there’s a lot in America to be afraid of when it comes to childbirth. America has the highest mother infant mortality rate in the developed world. Has the highest rate of lifelong complications either for the mother or the fetus in the developed world. Highest rates of fetal complications in the developed world. One of the lowest satisfactory rates of birthing mothers. And when you’re a person of color or a minority those things those numbers related to those things go through the roof. Also, we have to talk about the abortion in the room or the lack of depending what state you’re in. The fact that some women can’t get basic health care in the state they live in is something goes terribly wrong during their pregnancy is also something to be afraid of. Women are receiving life-altering for fertility ending damage because they can’t receive an abortion when something goes terribly wrong. Because Republicans think a heartbeats what makes something alive. Someone who has absolutely no medical training think they have the right to make medical decisions over somebody else’s body. All of this is legitimate things to be afraid of.

Also, we can’t ignore the elephant in the room when we talk about anything to do with medical care in the United States. The cost. Even with benefits for a regular uncomplicated birth, it can run you anywhere from three to $10,000 with benefits. We’re talking about complicated birthing issues. You can be looking at thousands and thousands of dollars. If not million. Which is a huge stress on somebody who comes from a middle income family. So financial destruction because of medical bills is a real issue in the United States. Considering over 70% of people who are in debt are in debt because of medical costs in the United States. So that’s wonderful that a high paid doctor with probably some of the best medical benefits in the world doesn’t think that you should be afraid of medical bills. Isn’t that courageous.

Also, no maternity leave in the United States. Only develop nation in the world without maternity or paternity leave. In fact, it’s one of the few countries in the world that don’t have guaranteed maternal or paternal leave. And the fact of the matter is babies die because there’s no maternity leave. How many horse stories do you hear coming out of daycares. That’s another thing to be afraid of . The cost of daycare is astronomic. Another thing to be afraid of when you’re already struggling to pay medical bills. Also, something a high paid doctor is probably not going to have to worry about. So again very courageous to tell other people not to be afraid.

Just for a little fun caveat, I’m going to add that the most common time for a woman to be murdered by a domestic partner is when she’s pregnant or immediately post-birth. Surprise surprise! America Is number one in women being murdered by domestic partners in the developed world. With one in four women in America experiencing domestic violence in their relationship. This is a real fair for some women.

So for this man doctor or not to come here very condescendingly I might add to tell women don’t be afraid of childbirth because oh you know we make you afraid because that’s how we control people when in actuality there’s There’s all these things that can go wrong in childbirth. When America’s got some of the worst stats in safe birthing in the developed world. When the cost of said birth could bankrupt your entire family. When we do nothing in this country to protect women against domestic violence. Because why would you stop at domestic abuser from having a gun. Is so condescending. It’s like when I have to wrap my little dog up in a blanket and pat her on the head and tell her not to be afraid of the thunder and lightning.

Pregnancy and delivery are dangerous. In America alone 300+ women die every day during labor and delivery.

Or the States are 178th in the world out of about 206 sovereign nations in infant mortality.

Well also oftentimes birthing doctors feel that a woman ought to be laying on her back while giving birth and as a result she has to work a lot harder to get the baby to where the doctor is, if the birthing woman were to be able to use gravity, and more natural birthing postures, she may find birth a lot easier. But it’s more important for the doctor to be nice and comfy in a little seat with everything perfectly presented to them… it’s just the way it’s done 🙄

This guy is so wrong! Yes, there’s fear around childbirth, but it’s not deliberately propagated that way. Women with any intelligence have always viewed pregnancy and childbirth with a certain amount of caution.
Yes, pregnancy is a condition, but not a medical condition until there are complications that put the woman’s life at risk, or that of her unborn child. There is also the risk of complications during the delivery itself (such as a breached birth) that can be extremely painful for the mother, and can result in a still birth or an emergency Caesarian section.

Complications of pregnancy are commonplace – not rare – and THAT is why women and their doctors want to be informed, well before the delivery date, of any possible complications they should be prepared for. I suspect that this doctor is speaking for the health insurance industry. Insurance companies don’t want to have to pay for prenatal and postnatal care. That cuts into their corporate profits.

What woman fears birth? This must be a cultural thing. But I haven’t met any woman in my life that fears birth or expresses this. I think he is trying about organized religion

This is a ridiculous point coming from the country that has the highest paternal and naternal death rates of the developed world. My ex had an uncontroled bleed furing our 2nd childs birth and almost died. Not to mention the multiple miscarriages and surgeries we went through trying to have our 2nd child. That is why there is fear around birth. F*ck this tool.

It’s because 55% of pregnancies end in miscarriage when no medical practitioner is involved. It is destructive to the mother’s body and there is heavy risk for her too. Thanks to medical science, we have gotten the failure rate below 15%.

I mean from what I know we have a death of the carrier at birth higher than most species or at least half, and the baby can squish its cranium all it wants they still destroy stuff in their wake

Because of how society is…. the bills come in before the baby is even here…. we can barely buy food and can’t afford kids anymore. It’s not just the physical aspect for some people. It’s the big picture and mainly the financial part I hear more nowadays.

birth (in most cases) belongs at home. a birthing person in labor is a carnal energy that needs a calm environment with their own smells, food and comfort == sterile, white hospital.

after having two pain-free births with the study of self-hypnosis, I believe that each person has the power to create their birth experience in the mind before they ever go into labor. there are always uncontrolled factors when it comes to life/giving life but how we handle what happens changes everything. what we can control is what we believe about birth, the images and conversations we have about birth, where we birth and who we let in the room!!

birth is feared because it is basically the closest to death a living being experiences in their natural life without actually dying – physically, spiritually and mentally….and many do die, physically. if we had adequate rituals for death, then birth would happen in more empowered, conscious ways.
