Comedians who hold all the establishment-approved opinions, one of which is personal friends with the Obama family, wonder what’s this cancel culture everyone keeps whining about. They’re free to say whatever they think, so clearly everyone else must be too!
ReplyPunching down is real, but it’s stupid to think it revolves around race, sexuality, or other characteristics like those. It’s very real when referring to wealth and power. A wealthy comedian with friends in all the high places, joking about how uneducated the peasants are for not voting how he likes, is punching down. And we see that every single day on national TV. Worst example is Colbert, who ironically enough used to make fun of out-of-touch talking heads before he became one.
ReplyBe sure to let me know when you find someone admitting to punching down.
ReplyThere is no such thing as punching down in comedy. Learn to take a joke or don’t watch comedy and stop harassing comedians.
ReplyComedians who push the boundaries like Jimmy Carr owe a huge debt of gratitude to the immortal Lenny Bruce
ReplyConan O Brian Is The Worlds Most Funniest Person Alive I Love Him To Death He Is So Funny I’m A Huge Fan Blessings To Him Always From Dee Rico Ramirez
ReplyCancel culture is real though. For example, Norm MacDonald. He was literally fired because of his joke about O.J. Simpson. He lost his platform with which he could reach an audience. People get fired for off-colour jokes in the workplace. Cancel culture *is* real.
ReplyJimmy is incredibly insightful and articulate. Oh – and funny. I’d ask him for a selfie, and I’d tell him that I like him.
ReplyIf I use vocabulary that is currently common on network television at my job on a consistent basis I would not be asked to return. I’m talking about vocabulary that has been treated this way since long before I was born. Censoring yourself to make your own life better has always been a thing. People are just salty that what they need to censor changes over time.
ReplyAlso, I’m betting many religious people wouldn’t recognize that they’ve been exercising the same control of personal expression for centuries. These are the same people whining about “cancel culture.”
Not my cup of tea. Pretending cis-hetero white male is at the bottom of social hierarchy? Not my world.
ReplyThe irony of Jimmy Carr’s career is that despite his whole shtick of “ooooh look at me, I’m saying stuff you can’t say” he’s a hugely successful stand-up comedian
Like, if he was saying stuff you ACTUALLY can’t say, he wouldn’t have a platform anymore… find another tired trope to latch onto, please
Reply“My wife. . . .not a fan “:)
ReplyThere is huge cancel culture. Just visit China or Japan and see what kind of thing is ok to say there.
Replysona seems like a huge fan!
ReplyI’ve literally watched Jimmy Carr’s Netflix special just to get offended by his rudeness – it’s part of the attraction
Replyi like Jimmy Carr because he’s an equal opportunity offender. Anyone who goes to a Jimmy Carr show and complains that they are offended is basically an idiot.
ReplyCarr is just not funny.
ReplyWhen’s Season 2 coming out?
ReplyLove Jimmy. Always funny, articulate, and lightening fast.
Reply(3:40) I can relate to “Comedians, we desperately, desperately, want to be loved; entirely on our own terms”. It is enlightening and a burden. 😆
