ReplyI am an avid long distance back packer hiker — did the full Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail during this lifetime. Seldom seen a truly serious long distance hiker who was black. It is a mostly a white person “”thing””. Why ? Because people do it to get away from all this kind of stuff — the racial conversation , the constant politics , the TV set , the youtube videos, all of human society. They do it to forget the hub bub of human interactions and concentrate on the self, the soul , the essentials of life , and what is truly important. Plus, I have never been called a racist or homophobe by a tree, a bird, the night sky, the moon ,and the rising sun. Meanwhile on my TV set and in the political conversation I am always called a racist simply because I was born with white skin. Yes , partly to get away from all this stuff some of us white folks retreat to the woods. What a relief for us white people.
