ReplyPart of my experience with these apps as a driver is that customers often aren’t aware of how far away the restaurant they’re ordering from is. They just see food that looks good or has good reviews and place an order. The apps often put places at the top of the list that are 10 miles away which if you’re delivering in a city area takes a lot of time. It can also take you out of an area where it would be easy to get your next order. Meaning you have to spend time and gas/energy getting back to an area where you’re more likely to start getting orders again.
ReplyAs a millenial the only reason I was able to put a downpayment on a house was because 1. I got a medical settlement. 2. My mother went half in with me so we could use her credit score. It took me 2 years of splitting the mortgage with her before I was able to graduate and get a better paying job so I could take over the payments in full.
ReplyIn the last 4 months the CEO of Uber, Dara K was offered stock options of 50 million to keep his newly public company if he kept stock at a certain price. He lowered drivers pay at $2 an offer to accomplish this. Screwing drivers, customers with high mile , low pay, no tip offers. He removed drivers profit to accomplish HIS goal. Report on that Jon.
ReplyI order my groceries from Walmart+ but that is the only thing I do that with. The only reason is because I have no Drivers License and I walk every where in my town. To do my weekly groceries without it i’d have to go back to asking friends to take me weekly and I usually had to put gas or buy them something (frozen pizza usually). I always leave great remarks on the drivers and have gotten to know quite a few well enough that they know where to park for my apartment when the see my name. I never make them carry anything either. I meet them at the car and carry my groceries up the 3 flights of steps. Most they’ve gotta do is open my security door for me so i can get in. I’ve been thanked many times for it and how I do it all. I’ve heard horror stories from them also of people making them carry everything and this and that and then no tip at all or really poor one. I have had 3 drivers who have been cool. I always give them a bud when they come along with the tip.

ReplyNot sure i’m glad about living in an area not serviced by these apps. On the one hand, i don’t see drivers being abused by these companies.
On the other hand, i see the same people who would be drivers get abused by their managers and exploited by people who only care about making money over running a good business.
Profit margins for food are abysmal. It takes a special type to run a non-exploitative restaurant. I grew up in a town of elderly Karens, too, so a .25 cent tip was all you could expect for exemplary service. And you didn’t dare give less than exemplary service unless you were the boss’s favorite. Yhat boss was very exploitative of their workers, hiring young girls to keep the perverts happy. Then ignored when those girls got grabbed. Of course, our only other kob opportunity was the nursing home, where we basically put up with the same treatment. Apparently penises are a necessary part of thistle digging… never needed one to dig thistles on my grandparents farm…
It’d be nice to see politicians work to prevent these tech bros from from moving so fast and breaking things. Especially when they are breaking things that have terrible infrastructure in our area as it is. Inatead we get to watch Loony Goons tossing dynamite around while a few adults struggle to keep up with the mess…
ReplyI’m not a regular delivery service customer, but I should not be held responsible for determining the value of the energy expelled by my delivery person. If I was to order something, I would NEVER expect that the “driver” would be peddaling a bicycle to my door. Hopping in a car and driving for 3 miles is far less effort that cycling 3 miles over bridges. This whole business model is encouraging the crazy tipping culture in this country that needs to stop!
ReplyThe main reason I use a food app is for the convenience of being able to use a credit card for my meal, none of the restaurants in my area take credit cards over the phone and they don’t have their own websites for ordering.
ReplyI always call the restaurant or go in person so I know my food is fresh. The restaurant then makes it’s full amount and I get hot fresh food. Also, makes me self reliant and not lazy.
ReplyIdk food delivery apps have really helped a lot of people. They get a bad rap. I’ve had a lot of people deliver to me or be Uber driver that don’t speak English and say it would be impossible for them to get this high of paying job in their country
ReplyEven if you try to bypass the apps by calling the restaurant, many STILL use Doordash or similar to deliver your food. Jewel used to have delivery trucks that delivered groceries straight from the warehouse; now they use Doordash. The worst part is the good companies that actually paid employees well and have much better service, like Peapod grocery delivery, have went away. I don’t know why, but the services that are worse for employees and customers alike are the most prevalent.
ReplyThe Skype answer was pretty obvious. Guess who bought Skype all those years ago? Microsoft. Microsoft also owns Teams. So it’s basically them trying to slowly sunset Skype for their other newer product.
