David E. Sanger – “New Cold Wars” with Russia & China | The Daily Show

Published on April 15, 2024

White House and National Security Correspondent David E. Sanger joins Jon Stewart to discuss his latest book “New Cold Wars.” Sanger details how America’s “arrogance” in the decades after the Cold War led to underestimating Russia’s imperialistic plans, including its invasion of Ukraine, and how a similar pattern is unfolding with China. They also discuss how America’s foreign policy track record might impact its role in simultaneous “new cold wars” with Russia and China. #DailyShow #JonStewart #ColdWar

How is it possible to refer to the conflict in Ukraine and the conflicts between the PRC and its neighbors as “New Cold Wars” when they are obviously underway and rather heated?

All wars are over resources. Framing it ideologically as democracy and freedom over dictatorships is just what people are told, because most people can’t handle reality. It’s actually kind of weird to feel more justified going to war over principles than simply to have access to more stuff and continued competition which sometimes comes down to military power. The latter is reality which people actually want but don’t like to have to accept it. We are too naive in having to try to justify things morally.

Wow, americans living in a big bubble. We, in Latinoamerica knew that Putin/Russians and Chinese would never cave to America’s delirious dream of Greatness! LOL The lack of Universal History in these people is just, unbelievable. And these is the people we adore when coming as missionaries to LA, telling us what to do or not. They killed our young Democracies.

15:00 These folks have serious allergies with “authoritarian regime”. But in reality, we did more harm, destabilized more countries, invaded more countries, spent more on defense than an authoritarian regime. Aside from being able to criticize govt, we the people, literally have no in the policy decision. No matter whether we elect democrat or republican, AIPAC/ military industrial complex decides what politicians can or can’t do. China elevated 100M people out of poverty in merely 10 years. Neighboring India is a democracy, were they able to do it? Both countries were in similar economic condition during 60s.

We talk a lot about democracy, free speech but in reality, our democracy is classified as “flawed democracy” in Economist Democracy Index. China is a one-party system. We are a two-party system. We have two choices, and both are at the end of their lives.

“Did the United States do a poor job of managing risk after the fall of the Soviet Union?” The real answer is no different than what’s happening today vis-a-vis Ukraine. It’s not so much that the U.S. government was trying to manage risk; it was trying to see how much business could be conducted in Russia while pacifying and silencing those who pointed out the risks. Foreign policy will almost always slide toward the accumulation of greenbacks, which brings blatantly obvious risks that politicians and talking heads try their best to avoid bringing up. We see this in play with Germany withholding Taurus missiles for Ukraine and the U.S. State Department and current administration trying to get Ukraine to stop attacking Russia’s oil infrastructure. Shareholders of international businesses can’t wait for Russia to defeat Ukraine so that they can go back to freely selling their wares again in Russia. As if they’re just scraping by without the Russian market. Go back further to Nixon and Mao and we see the same thing. The Nixon administration and State Department knew that the policy of “engagement” with China wasn’t going to work, but the potential of selling U.S.-made stuff to a billion Chinese was too mouthwateringly tempting not to give it the old college try.

So much pomposity! How much conceit! The whole world doesn’t care what the United States wants. They have their own interests, not American ones.

I like that both of these guys reach a place of truth without having their emotions completely take over and flying off into crazy fringe land. Thank you both. Some people in the media get soooo close to doing this sometimes, you can feel them getting to something and then the BS takes over “Aaaaand they’re gone” lol.

too bad Stewart cut in with comedy after asking really pertinent questions and not letting the guest give a full answer. It was very unsatisfying. Im thumbs downing this video for that reason.
