ReplyThe boomers were the first generation to grow up with the nuclear threat. I was a born in 1947. We saw Russia as the most likely country to use “the bomb.” We saw Khrushchev pound his shoe on the table and shout, “We will bury you.” We were generationally close to Hitlerian horrors and Chinese and Russian imperialism. Many of us lost family members to authoritarian dictatorships. I think maybe succeeding generations have become “comfortable numb,” as the song says. Or maybe as Frank Zappa ironically sang, “It can’t happen here.” All of us need to wake up. It can happen here.
