That was beautiful and powerful. To watch his face as he expressed each note with emotion was wonderful.

I will be forever grateful for my high school boyfriend, Eric. He was a cellist, and he introduced me to the music of Yo-Yo Ma. After high school, another friend and I went to a dress rehearsal at Abravenal Hall in Salt Lake City, and I got to meet Yo-Yo before he performed with the Utah Symphony. The picture I took did not turn out well, but I treasure it — always — based on the memory of meeting the most personable and skilled cellist this world might ever know.

The dude who wrote Amazing Grace was a slave trader. One day on one of voyages coming back from Africa, the Spirit came down on him. He looked at what he was doing and realized how wrong and evil it was. That’s why he wrote “how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.”

I don’t often listen to the music guests on the show but for Yo-Yo Ma, I’ll happily make an exception. I love solo cello music probably more than most solo instrumental music and to hear a master play is always special. I was lucky enough to hear Mischa Maisky in concert in my home town a few years ago when he played with the WASO and that was incredible. Always looking forward to the next concert 🙂

When during intermission I noticed how witty, loving & gracious the man infront of me was. I assumed he was a professional musician. Someone said “Hi Yo Yo” to this man. He was you.

My mom, sister, and I saw him perform at University of Wisconsin – Parkside in the late ’70s. I really didn’t want to go as the weather was crap and I didn’t feel well. But my mom insisted that it was too important to miss. This was probably due to my sister playing the cello, and I played the violin. He’s only ten years older than I am. Perhaps she was trying to give us inspiration. I only know that I’m glad I went and will never forget it. Sometimes now it still feels like I dreamt it.
