Why No Progressive Agenda Can Survive the Senate Filibuster

Democrats won control of the Senate, House, and White House in the last election but STILL can’t get anything done. Why? Because while the Senate filibuster lives, no progressive agenda can survive.

Inept bureaucracy is the goal of government. Progress for the people must be stopped. Catering to lobbyists is the only action to be made. Hence all of the fiscal stimulus for the past 13 years.
Jan 6 was a glimpse into what actually needs to happen. Democrats and Republicans have destroyed America.
The people have been fooled into hating each other. Shame on us.
    Our elected officials are crooks.

I would like to see both AOC and Madison Cawthorn do Hot Ones. Separately, obviously. Mostly because I know that Sean would ask questions about their lives before they were in Congress and not actually about politics. In fact, I think he’d ask them to avoid politics if they could and I’d bet that AOC would, but Cawthorn wouldn’t.

Actually, I think a better way would be to make the filibuster what it was before; only one Senator gets to do it any he has to keep on talking until his bladder falls out. With Mitch McAnal, that should take about two minutes.

I’d say they should at least make the person who proposed the filibuster perform it. Let McConnell get up there and talk as long as he’s physically capable of doing so, then go right ahead and have the vote anyway. As it stands, all a senator has to do is send an email saying he’d like to filibuster and it’s done. There’s no personal cost to it.

I agree that eliminating the filibuster would be a good idea, but there’s another way to move forward:
While the insanity & cowardice is evident in the GOP, the insanity & cowardice of Democrats needs to be addressed as well. Why are Congressional Dems avoiding defining what constitutes a Domestic Terrorist Organization & the consequences of membership? Wouldn’t enabling (and inciting) sedition, insurrection & treason, as well as expressed dedication to destroying democracy in favor of a dictatorship & authoritarianism qualify as worthy of expulsion from politics, elections & governing?

Here it is in a nutshell: the Democrats need to get it out of their head right now, that the Republicans will never agree to anything that benefits the American people in any way!
Look at everything the Republican Party does! It is all aimed at keeping them in power, and making themselves and their rich corporate buddies richer and richer!
They want the good old white boys club to stay in power, and to continue to grind it down the poor people of this country, and to be able to control the middle class!
The Republicans are deathly afraid of a truly democratic America! That is their greatest fear! They do not want the American people to call the shots! They want to call the shots!

Both parties regularly agree on wars, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, drone bombs, austerity, income inequality, monopolies, militarized police, partisan propaganda, mass surveillance, stifling freedom of speech, locking up whistle blowers, and glorifying a brutal, torturous, unaccountable, “intelligence”/military/police juggernaut.

The best explanation for filibuster is that neither republicans nor democrats are in charge. The big corporations give Bribe (Campaign Contribution) to both parties and control the agenda. So, the idea that each party would need a vast majority to get anything done is just a sick game to keep a tight leash on both parties. The corporations don’t want either party to have real influence.

The Democratic Party needs to initiate an infrastructure audit for Kirsten Sinema’s and Joe Manchin’s respective States which would point out every bridge and highway which is a clear and present danger to the health and safety of the public along with other infrastructure problems known to be long unsolved in those States. The audit would be a cogent move being that both of these Senators may be aspiring to the state gubernatorial post in future politics. It is time to fight about these issues and do some perfectly legal political water boarding directed toward individuals holding elective office currently finding themselves unable to help in what has become a battle of democracy and democratic [small ‘d’] values versus what has become the raw and open authoritarianism and patterns of lies being expressed by those in the Republican Party. Compromise in this current context is yielding to forces which have become the @/traitornation minority which has always existed within this Nation.

The democrats have a chance to use this issue to gain many more seats in congress instead they are making the ability to debate a bill before it comes to a vote as the enemy… the filibuster is not the problem the republicans are … vote them out… and if they are too impatient to wait for the next election have each item in a bill have a separate vote and make sure every item is on the record with their constituency.

Lobbyists’ money is the main reason why both parties in the Senate are corrupted. Though it’s mostly the gop senators’ desire to cling to this easy money job (though there are Democrats too like manchin & sinema), no laws will be passed that will benefit the American people if gop sentors keep on hampering & hindering everything that will help us real working Americans. And even more important, we will lose any challenge or confrontation with the ccp if we are this disunited since they act as one with the ultimate goal of toppling the current world order led by the US. If we keep on being divided like this, all our advances in technology & military superiority will all be for nothing.

I think another good idea is to eliminate the 2 party system and first past the post. The Republicans can afford to drag their feet because the election deck is stacked in their favour. They will just wait until the next election. If the system became multiple parties and used single transferrable which prevents the chance for majority then there is no choice but to work

It really is sad that voting rights is called a progressive agenda in a country that once held itself up as a model of democracy.
For all its flaws, mandatory voting, like we have in Australia, is probably the soundest way to produce a democratic will of the people in all elections, and remove most disenfranchisement (and opportunities for political parties to disenfranchise voters). Also an independent electoral commission (AEC in Australia), which if applied properly will remove undemocratic sports like Gerrymandering.

At least go back to the original Filibuster, you must talk on floor continuously to stop voting on the bill. sure nothing would get done in the meantime but nothing is getting done now. And televise the talking so everyone can see how nothing of importance is being said.

Samantha, you seem to miss the point?
If The Democrat Party Leadership approved
    Progressives among their Caucus,
    the money would go away…..
If Democrats were truly a gang of Progressive Socialists
that current GOP Guy’s Rhetoric describes them as,
They would have a Filibuster Proof Majority…..
The obvious issues that things like a filibuster overlook is,
the fact that both sides while claiming major differences,
cling to the concept of their Party as their Team, or their Business…..
Investors can buy better players, or nicer facilities for Party Activity.
Buying better marketing has put Mercer’s into a
    major position among politicians……
The illusion that there is a major difference between the two,
has become the venue of Media.
Media like Politics depends on sponsors for their revenue…..
Perez admitted that revenue is the essential element.
    Voters can be purchased…..

Bypass the filibuster by requiring 60 votes and if you can’t get that, just take the legislation to the public for a vote.
Democrats have 50 votes and the public will give them the added votes necessary.
Plus, such a rule will get Republicans nothing because their policies will never be approved by the public.
