Turns out, feeding kids at school raises test scores and lowers behavior problems. It’s also, conveniently, the right thing to do. This is a digital exclusive.

Republicans are only interested in kids from the time of conception to the time of birth.
ReplyI believe the children are our future
ReplyTeach them well and let them eat.
Give them a sense of pride & a full belly.
We are the world
ReplyWe are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let’s start giving
There’s a choice we’re making
We’re saving our own lives
It’s true we’ll make a better day
Should be a short video: kids should never go hungry anywhere ever.
ReplyHonestly not surprising. Republicans hate kids, as they consistently show, so it’s kind of on brand.
ReplyInsane we have to advocate for FEEDING CHILDREN
ReplyWhy aren’t schools double as prep kitchens for meals on wheels too?
ReplySave money. Help pay for more kitchen staff.
Remember everyone Republicans say “We’re Number 1!”
ReplyThere is something seriously wrong with a society where children actually need school lunches. If their parents were paid a decent wage, if there were grocery stores in necessary locations, and if people were educated about the basics of nutrition, school lunches would be what they should be, i.e. an option, not a necessity. They should also be free, obviously. It is outrageous that kids have to pay for their school lunches. When my kids were in school in Europe, they received a three-course, healthy meal at lunch time and in some schools in that country, children can also have their evening meal at school… all free (because some societies take into account that not all families have two parents or that some families have parents who both work). When we moved to the US, my kids briefly got school lunches and then I found out I was paying for pizza, hot dogs or spaghetti bolognese… these were the alternatives available for if the child didn’t like what was on the menu…or if like many kids, they really like pizza, hotdogs and spaghetti bolognese. Hopefully, things have changed since then.
Where are all of those people who were out protesting against having to wear a mask for a temporary amount of time? why are they not out protesting against having to pay for school lunches? There is something very wrong with a society where people will protest against something so temporary and insignificant, but not bother to fight for their kids’ well-being.
ReplyFor a country that constantly tells the rest of the world we are the greatest country in the history of humanity, the failure to demand our own children don’t go hungry shows how far apart our rhetoric is from our actions. Finding a way to justify not feeding our own children is nothing short of appalling. Ignoring the most vulnerable group in our society reveals how completely we have failed as a country. When a single person can prevent a policy supported by a large majority from even being discussed, our system of democracy has failed.
ReplyAh yes, the cheese sandwich of shame.
ReplyHere you go Elon Musk. Twitter was free btw
ReplyI remember working the lunch line for all of 4th grade because somehow I didn’t qualify for reduced or free lunch and didn’t have anything to take to school. Nothing like missing 2 hours of class to be the poorest kid who didn’t have food and serving everyone else. Senate needs to have a stand alone vote on this to make senators shame themselves.
Reply*The fact that “children shouldn’t go hungry” is a controversial statement breaks my brain.*
Like, _no one_ should go hungry in general because food isn’t an optional luxury, but _especially_ kids. It’s our job as grownups to care for the mini humans; they’re 100000% dependent on adults for survival and have no other option.
Reply*Just a reminder that having some form of free lunch program for kids who can’t afford it isn’t a radical leftist idea in other countries.*
For context, I live in the most conservative part of the most conservative province in Canada (our nickname is literally “the Texas of Canada”) and _every_ school I’ve worked at has had both a free breakfast _and_ free lunch program in some capacity.
ReplyFood is good. Children, also, is good. Children in food, even better. I meant the opposite.
ReplySHAME ON YOU SAMANTHA!! WHAT A DISGUSTING NARROW MINDED PRESUMPTIOUS COMMENT AT 6:01. ASSUMING THAT SINGLE DADS ARE LOSERS AND DON’T KNOW HOW TO CARE FOR THEIR KIDS?? SHAME ON YOU. WHAT AN UNEDUCATED AND BIASED COMMENT.
ReplyYknow, watching shows like this as a European, it’s bizarre. Your country is a dystopia!
ReplyKids should eat Mitch Mcconnell.
ReplyI recommend looking to Finland 🇫🇮, as I do with ‘all things school’.
