ReplyBill is totally full of shit on this. I graduated from college a couple years ago and I read John Locke. This whole thing is such a straw man. He says the west is held to an impossible standard, that we only have war crimes because of the west, but when was the last time the US abided by the rulings of the international courts? Of course Hamas and Jihadis are awful, but he’s acting like any criticism of “the west” is ridiculous. One of the worst editorials of all time.
ReplyI’m a fan of Bill Maher’s show, but he’s often biased and wrong when it comes to the middle east. The partition plan of 1947 in itself was not fair at all, and it’s rather understandable why it was rejected by the Palestinians, with around 56% of the land given to the settlers, most of which was the best agricultural land, despite the native Palestinian population being more than twice in numbers at the time. The Zionist leaders wanted the partition plan to be rejected so they’d use it as an excuse to capture more land, and this is exactly what happened. A lot of the territory Israel holds today was not part of the partition plan. The independence/nakba war was the perfect opportunity to seize more land and displace the native population. Human rights you say? As of now, neither side respects human rights, but one side claims to be the only true democracy in the middle east while ethnically cleansing the other side, which has been ongoing for decades by the way.
The Zionist movement was rather sneaky and systematic with the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, and this is still happening today. The land had a multi-ethnic and a multicultural society before all that, including its jews.
Western governments are quite hypocritical with the treatment of the Palestinian issue. You and I can never put ourselves in their shoes. Try being born in Gaza or the West Bank and see how your human rights are respected.
I’m not a Palestinian, but an observer from the middle east, and when Ukraine was invaded, we stood with Ukraine because we condemn injustice as a people and government. Same goes for Palestine, we don’t do it because we’re Arab or Muslim, but because it’s the right thing to do! It’s not brag either because this is nothing to brag about, human rights are clearly being violated, and we recognise that we cannot act as a moral compass to anyone else in this world, but at least my middle eastern government is consistent with its foreign policy and we’re not committing such war crimes.
I’m not a westerner but I’m still proud of my values as a human being, and it doesn’t take a genius to see what’s going on and view it objectively. Peaceful coexistence is not a western invention. We can still have shared values as human beings no matter where we’re from.

ReplyWe’re in the 21st century, cold war era is over. History has shown us, we can’t keep creating democracies by force or fortune. We’ve implanted democracy/western values in many places around the world, some have worked well and survived, some have not and are back in control of dictators, communists, socialists. We need to stop paying people and financing wars in the name of democracy. We should be more worried about traditionally democratic nations slipping away from democracy with socialist ideals and executive powers that serve those in power instead of the peoples in the countries they represent.

ReplyBill needs to read more if he thinks the “whites are the reason we have a successful democratic supplant in the world” is gonna suffice for those who know better. Syncretism is the word. NOBODY says white people are all bad. He gets his bits from crazy people on S.M. Europeans aren’t the reason for the democracy we have now. Syncretic ideals gave us a democratic republic. African ideals + Native American ideals + European ideals + perfected by black Americans = American Democracy. 13th, 14th & 15th Amendments, Civil Rights, Voting Rights, Marriage Equality. This narrative of some whites terrorized, but then the mostly good whites saved us is old.

ReplyI’ve said it a thousand times, we need to really push to differentiate between liberals and progressives. Progressives won’t ever stop. They have few definable views or values and seem to only believe in pushing for increasingly more radical change for change’s sake alone. Liberals stand for equal rights, equality of opportunity, free speech, freedom of movement, and freedom to gather as well as protecting the environments individuals live in and around while being the watchdogs of the government and corporations. Progressives just seem to want to tear things down and rebuild it into something radically different. I wish the Democrats stood more for liberalism and less for progressivism.
