Jesus, I like The Rock a lot, but having him in the Oval feels like ten steps closer to the reality of “Idiocracy” than ever before– and after seven or eight, that’s it, there’s no going back, no water for gatorade turning things around.

Why has “Video Killed the Radio Star” started playing in my head?

Good gory, popularity and populism’s bastard half-brother, Snow, have led to ruination, and the answer for too many in a democracy is more of both?! We’re all of us really gonna need a new country soon.

Yes, I just hit “edit”… because you probably said that “I’m dumb” for asking such a stupid question… I admit it, it was a stupid question. We’ve all SEEN with our own eyes.

I’m a bit on the fence on this one. The american electorate is dumber than your average high income country voter, so you need celebrities on your side to win. That’s how Trump won. If democrats want to win, then they need to understand the American itself has a celebrity culture. You can’t win based on your CV alone, Hillary proved that, she got beaten by a con man who had a reality TV show.

I don’t know, I think the problem is the system has become so rotted from the inside, both parties, that people will do anything for someone ‘outside’ that system.

TBH The Rock may be a movie meathead but I honestly believe he’d be better for the country than most political candidates, and I’m not even a fan of his. Hell I wish Dennis Leary would run just for the eviscerating debates and the fact he cares about freedom above political correctness but is a full Democrat.

The problem is the ‘paid and educated’ leadership are neither. They are all focused so much on ‘playing politics’ they forgot to take them seriously. We would be better off if every single person – no exceptions, period – was removed from the Senate and Congress and completely repopulated, frankly. Random people would better and I mean that sincerely, at least there’s a 1% chance of them giving a single f’ck.

well, their first job is getting elected; their second job is paying back the people who funded their campaigns, and their third job is to appease what their relevant demo thinks about social issues…. Even so, that’s not the marble in the Mouse Trap. Most people who get there by “conventional” means, quickly turn extreme cognitive dissonance and Self-justification, into “tough or necessary decisions”

But there are politicians who know how to navigate the functional side of governance and law; feel morally obligated to tell the truth, don’t want to owe favors to the new axis of evil, and base their platform on good/ accessible social science and academia.

a reliable voting base is the only fix for, a rockstar pushing change, who then deviates little and breaks every horrible record…

What exactly has “changed” in the last 4 months?

Did the minimum wage go up?

Did students get their loans forgiven?

Did prescription drug prices go down?

Did health care costs go down?

    Did more people get healthcare?

Did the “Hot Wars” that the United States is currently engaged in, in 134 countries, come to an end?

Did wall street and the banks and corporations get reeled in?

    Has homelessness gotten better?

    Has inflation gone down?

I ask again, what exactly has changed in the last 4 months.

Has the immigration crisis and policies gotten better?

    Has police reform taken shape?

Has crony capitalism and government corruption stopped?

The only thing that really changed is the daily barrage of inflammatory rhetoric by Trump on social media platforms has stopped.

Other then that, meet the new boss, same as the old boss. And Bill loves the new boss.

I actually don’t agree with Maher’s rant here. For one, I completely disagree with Maher that Biden and Obama are “good” politicians. That’s highly debatable. Second, aren’t we all sick of “career politicians”? Nancy Pelosi has decades of experience in governing, and all of it is HIGHLY corrupt. Pelosi takes more corporate PAC donor money than almost anyone in Washington today and recently was caught in an insider trading scandal. Liberals want to keep blaming Trump’s 2016 election victory on anything but the obvious reason: Hillary Clinton is un-electable! Hillary couldn’t beat Jerry Sandusky in an election. Trump won because the DNC ran the absolute most unlikable, untrustworthy, corrupt corporatist-Centrist imaginable. That’s why Trump won in 2016, NOT because of “Russian interference”, not because of James Comey, not because of Bernie Sanders or Jill Stein, but because Hillary is THE most unpopular politician of our times and the DNC were blind idiots to run her. There is no requirement or training in governing. When President Kennedy chose Robert McNamara to be his Secretary of Defense, McNamara objected that he had no prior experience. Kennedy’s reply was, “Well Bob, there’s no training to be president either”.

President Kennedy was our last genuine inspirational President. However, Bill, Kennedy gave us the Bay of Pigs which gave us the Cuban Missle Crisis. Yes he got us out of that without starting WW3 but he did get us into it. Not sound judgement on the Bay of Pigs. Now when Trump was pressured to respond to the Iranian downing of a U.S. drone by launching a missle strike against an Iranian target with the estimated death of as many as 150 Iranians (a night strike so a lot of dead janitors) Trump said no. There are about 150 Iranians whom should be thankful Trump was President and not the typical resident of The White House.

I’ve been saying this about “celebrities” (stupid word) for the longest time. You could, additionally, add imbeciles like AOC and her ilk when it comes to “intelligence” and being prepared before running for office. Albeit AOC was not a “celebrity” candidate, she was (and is) an utterly intellectually embarrassing goon who knew sh*t about what Bill Maher mentioned (e.g budget reconciliation and other stuff) whilst she was running for congress.

Bill would be making an excellent point here– if most of American politicians weren’t also morons. What’s worse: the moron that wants more power and wealth for themself, or the misguided celeb that mistakenly thinks they’re qualified for the job?

You’re talking about a US President who is clearly suffering severe cognitive decline, you can at least be intellectually honest about that fact. Dems wanted to impeach Trump when he picked up a glass of water with two hands. Imagine what they’d be saying if he bumbled around like Joe. If you want your argument to be worth more than a cheap laugh, you have to at least be mildly honest. Don’t pretend like Joe knows what’s happening, and don’t ascribe anything but selfishness to Kamala and most politicians. They’re not there to make things better. They’re there to gain more power. I say trim them back, we have far too many.

Maher here is completely ignoring the key reason that celebrities run for political office: the most important asset necessary to winning an election is widespread public knowledge of who you are and that people like you. People know actors or, perhaps better said that they believe at a subconscious level that the characters that these actors play on the screens inside their homes are good people and accordingly, the man behind the mask is good too. People rarely vote based on policy but on the person.

    Reply
  • TᕼᕮᗰᕮSSIᕼᗩ 3 years ago

These segments are increasingly insufferable. Some timestamped highlights:

0:21 A critique of narcism from a guy who routinely calls most of the country “stupid”

3:14 Complaining that actors shouldn’t be in politics because they don’t have the right experience while you fancy yourself a political commentator while not having taken political science in college (he majored in english and history per wikipedia). You’re free to do so and other will ascribe value to your opinion, same as these actors. Their occupations are not the sum total of who they are.

3:54 I like this part, where he goes on about how politicians know about government and the world off the top of their heads. Just like your writers room, why do you think most politicians have such a large staff of aides? To do the work. Case in point, your preferred 2020 democratic candidate, Amy Klobuchar, when questioned in an interview didn’t know the name of the current and then recently elected president of Mexico (I knew who that was and I don’t govern shit).

5:05 Maher routinely complains about ageism jokes and here he makes one about Joe Biden. This doesn’t bother me at all, just thought it interesting.

6:06 This part bugs me the most. How the hell does he know whether any of these people are “good enough” or “smart enough”? Hell, what does that even mean specifically? Which college you attended, your chosen major, your career choices? What qualifications does a person need to make it onto Maher’s list?

Look, I don’t endorse the idea that someone should be president JUST BECAUSE they are a celebrity. But I won’t write off someone just because they work in entertainment and think that their job defines who they are completely.

Alas, we have never ever voted for people based on their experience and skill. Most Americans look at candidates and pick the one they like. It’s not based on anything other than ‘I like how he talks.’ basically. If you want qualified people on the ballot, perhaps pass some laws that require some sort of competence testing of prospective candidates. We require people to pass a test to drive a f’ing car FFS. You have to pass a test to become a citizen of this country. Why not for running for political office? Alas, that’ll never happen, because the folks who make the laws would never do something that would disqualify themselves from running for office. I’d wager most of the folks who are in political office right this very moment couldn’t even pass the citizenship test. Why are we putting up with this? You need a license for just about every other profession that has the potential to harm others if you’re incompetent. Lawyers, doctors, truck drivers, forklift operators.. but not politicians? WTF PEOPLE?

    Why?
Mr. Simpson was tried and found ‘not guilty’ by a jury.
Is Bill Maher in possession of convincing evidence that was not presented in the trial?
Does Maher find Mr. Simpson a convenient foil?

I’ll never understand how Democracy has become such a treasured cultural ideal. It has been known to be flawed for thousands of years; in its pure form, it’s a mob rule. Democracy can only work in theory, because it assumes an informed electorate. A Democratic Republic is just the slow burn of Democracy lite.

In this country, as soon as you turn 18, you are legally eligible to vote. Huge propaganda campaigns immediately descend upon you in an attempt to sway your young, barely-formed, and hardly critical mind with pathos and fairness-justice. It’s a wonder that any of us can ever develop in such a cultural climate.

Keep your information sources diverse, kids. Evaluate cautiously. Trust nothing. Remember that what is popular need not be what is correct~ _argumentum ad populum._

Now I’m talking about the military because I feel that is slightly self evident why one can’t unless you have gone through the ranks. But the last time I checked, no president has ever truly united the masses and have had most people just agree with what their doing, unless they were assassinated.

Democracy is wonderful when majority of people are materially comfortable, emotionally stable, mentally balanced…. Otherwise, chaos will ensue if society lacks the above preconditions.

Plato’s Republic presents a critical view of democracy through the narration of Socrates: “foolish leaders of Democracy, which is a charming form of government, full of variety and disorder, and dispensing a sort of equality to equals and unequaled alike.”[34] In his work, Plato lists 5 forms of government from best to worst. Assuming that the Republic was intended to be a serious critique of the political thought in Athens, Plato argues that only Kallipolis, an aristocracy led by the unwilling philosopher-kings (the wisest men), is a just form of government.
Plato rejected Athenian democracy on the basis that such democracies were anarchic societies without internal unity, that they followed citizens’ impulses rather than pursuing the common good, that democracies are unable to allow a sufficient number of their citizens to have their voices heard, and that such democracies were typically run by fools. Plato attacked Athenian democracies for mistaking anarchy for freedom. The lack of coherent unity in Athenian democracy made Plato conclude that such democracies were a mere collection of individuals occupying a common space rather than a form of political organization.
According to Plato, other forms of government place too much focus on lesser virtues and degenerate into other forms from best to worst, starting with timocracy, which overvalues honour, then oligarchy, which overvalues wealth, which is followed by democracy. In democracy, the oligarchs, or merchant, are unable to wield their power effectively and the people take over, electing someone who plays on their wishes (for example, by throwing lavish festivals). However, the government grants the people too much freedom, and the state degenerates into the fourth form, tyranny, or mob rule.

Competence isn’t the problem with most US citizens. Intent is. The people question the intent of the establishment, not their competence in running government. That’s why the people are desperate to vote for outsiders who are hopefully not part of the establishment. People would rather have someone inexperienced who might actually WANT to help them instead of wanting to help oligarchs and corporations, even if they need to learn on the job a little. That’s a better option than someone highly experienced but their intent is in question. At this stage, most experienced politicians are seen as bought off by big money (as they actually are), so what option do people have? This is what you get when you legalize bribery by allowing unlimited donations to politicians through superPACs.

Oh settle down, Bill. As usual, you misunderstand the public. They don’t want celebrities because they don’t respect expertise… they want celebrities because they’ve seen what standard politicians DO with their expertise. They know Joe Biden. He’s the “Senator from MDNA” (Bank of America), remember? He wasn’t “studying how to be effective on the world stage,” he was studying, “how to not appear corrupt while I screw the people and shift money from their pockets into the pockets of people who need it less.” This weird shift toward celebrities has less to do with “reality television” and more to do with “Well, I guess I trust them more.” Even if most people realize that Matthew McConaughey doesn’t know how to govern, they also realize that’s probably a GOOD thing. To people who have been alive even half as long as you, Bill, it’s apparent that “knowing how to govern” isn’t much of a virtue when we consider how they DID govern. They want something different, and for good reason. So quit scolding people, ya dopey curmudgeon, and start trying to UNDERSTAND them better.

Things have been different in America these past five months, not because things are better, but rather because corporate media is failing to report. Instead of hard-hitting questions about any of the salient issues of our day, we get questions about the flavor of ice cream Biden prefers (gratuitous oohs and aahs inserted for effect when he answers), and concerned questions about a new White House cat. I mean, reporters are concerned because their readers are asking them “a lot” about the potential addition of a new cat in the Biden White House. It turns out those things the media fails to report are actually more telling than the crap they want us to consider important.

Nobody knew or cared about Barack Obama in 2006. His success as president is what made him a household name. It doesn’t work the other way around, though. You can’t gain political success through celebrity status like you can gain celebrity status through political success.

Joe Biden has been in congress for almost half a century and the only thing he has to show for is a bill that put more young black men in prison for small drug offenses. Trump knew world leaders and had asnwers to tough questions. Other leaders respected him, or at least feared him, and that was a good thing. Under Trump peopke had jobs, more money, better economy, cheaper gas, and energy independency. Now it’s all gone.

Every time I see the Rock float this, I have to question how un self aware he is? It’s bad enough with celebrities floating governorships, but The Rock floating seriously the idea of him being president is a insane level of being un self aware. He’s not a great actor, he got very lucky going from a guy notching out a good enough career as a WWE personality to a insanely highly paid actor, but his career is a bit of luck. He’s likable. He become a multi millionaire being likable. Not deep. Not a thoughtful body of work. Likable. His movies are basically high budget direct to video stuff. He has three expression in his acting. Tough. Caring. Curious. That’s it. He got really lucky. Yes, I would take the money too but I wouldn’t blow myself up to something way bigger than this. There are 40 other guys walking the sunset strip in Hollywood who are basically The Rock. Maybe they go off to have a good TV or B movie career if they are lucky. The Rock stumbled into a way bigger career than that. I would be like, if I was the Rock, I kill a lot of time entertaining people, and got really rich but not I’m the man to save America! Like WTF? America’s political problems aren’t one of your movies!

DEM or GOP leadership makes only a slight difference because the corporations own both parties and will get their money’s worth either way. Again, there’s a lot of truth to that, but the notion of anyone in high office feeling that they don’t ever need to “look stuff up” is a frightening one.

What if Larry Page didn’t know the peculiarities and specifics of one country or another, like details about Myanmar’s history? Does that mean he should never be president?! That kind of thinking is quite limiting and short-sighted.

And that’s precisely why presidents have advisors and all kinds of support staff to help them out.

But yes, it is true that Obama and Kennedy, for instance, had a lot of high education.

They’re actually smart, and they may be narcissists but they’re at least decent, well liked, and intelligent people that I don’t think would neglect to listen to advice from the people around them that DO know all those details of running the country.

I’m not saying that they’re ideal candidates or the best ones for the job, but I certainly can’t imagine either of them doing a worse job than Trump did.

Lastly, if someone that was actually decent and popular ran, they could be a bridge to bringing this fractured country back together again. They should run on an independent ticket ideally, but we all know that thats a dead end, unfortunately.

True, but Gavin Newsome also has a case of that malignant narcissism

But things haven’t been going well? Border crisis, unemployment, education sector still closed, Bidens cognitive decline?and Trumps not a celebrity first he became one because of his success in business, Obamas not a rockstar he just new how to lie to the public really well. Not sure that you made your point very well here, but I agree movie stars need to stay out of politics, mainly as they are highly trained pretenders….
