Liberals are no fun
ReplyI haven’t seen any new movies this year. Most recent film I watched was The Godfather on Netflix.
ReplyReally good film, not that you needed my opinion on that.
I just couldn’t get on board with all of the whining about this.
ReplyAnd nomadland is a great film.
He seemed personally offended by it.
Trial of the chicago 7 was pretty good actually.
Reply“It’s Godzilla vs. Kong, not Godzilla vs. Kong, and his crippling battle with depression.”
ReplyI don’t know Bill, Kong initial arc is about feeling trapped, and then trying to find his home, and his only friend is this little deft girl, seems kinda depressing?
I love you so much Bill and agree with you more than any of the late night commentators. But holy Jeezus please lose the worst hairpiece I’ve seen since the 70s under Tom Seleck’s nose. There is no freaking way not to question your sanity (and mine) under that hair piece.
ReplyBill is going OG on these Hollywood snowflakes, stop ruining movies!
ReplyThe Oscars use to celebrate important movies and popular movies. The Shape of Water is the last best picture I remember everyday people liked
ReplyPromising Woman was okay, but how the hell did it make it to a best picture nomination?
ReplyWhat a fantastic monologue. One of his very best written ones. And so true, this year was horrendous for films, Incredibly depressing. Where is “Our Man Godfrey” for 2021? That was a depression era film that was fun and moving.
ReplyBill is hitting bullseyes lately just when we need him.
ReplyLOL!
ReplyI’ll admit that I’m a complete Oscar nerd. I’ve seen more than 70 of the Best Picture winners and 308 of all the nominees. (I learned that on a recent Buzzfeed quiz.)
This was one of the funniest things I’ve seen in years! Bill Maher can do this on nearly any topic extremely well, and this was no exception.
ReplyI wonder if the woke liberals actually know he’s going after them half the time.
ReplyGiven the criteria they added for nomination (anything other than being a good movie) yeah the oscars can fuck off for eternity. This is the 2nd New Rules Bill did on them recently-ish.
ReplyMacabre is the new COVID-19 normal.
ReplyHollywood’s not getting my dollars. My rule – if the critics like it, run, run fast, run far, far away.
ReplyReally stupid. Movies, especially well made ones depicting people getting through adversity, are very engaging and entertaining. Milking alleged virtue signaling and fake victimhood is lame
ReplyHonestly so true. We need some new comedies as well!
ReplyBecause it’s almost an unspoken requirement by the Academy Awards that any movie has to be a sappy if not depressing “serious” drama to be in contention for an Oscar nowadays.
ReplyGee, curmudgeon much!?
ReplyBill Maher just Greg gutfeld Greg Gutfeld ..but better ijs
ReplyHe mentioned the conflict in Syria; without any context, but he mentioned it.
Ok Bill.
Today, you’re a hero.
ReplyBill has also done a New Rule bemoaning superhero escapism culture so he’s really trying to have it both ways here…
ReplyYes Bill Coming 2 America was a depressing movie. They have made depressing movies since day one so stop saying that every movie they make is a downer because it’s nonsense. If you want to raise awareness about some depressing things that are happening all around the world than a movie is a good way to do that. Sorry if that isn’t entertaining enough for you. Maybe you can watch one of the movies you were in on VHS.
ReplyBest Maher show in a year!
Replythe biggest downer is Bill giving away all the spoilers. f–k you Bill.
ReplyThey should have cancelled the Oscars anyway because there was like nothing to nominate.
ReplyMovies are so political these days… they forgot that we watch movies to escape politics, everyday struggle, our daily routine. Gives us 90 minutes of joy. I live politics every hour, why would I want to watch another 90 minutes of it.
ReplyEvery comment is a quote from the segment….?
ReplyIn college, I told a class called Multicultural Studies and I remember a story about an old eastern European woman, a newly ex-pat American couple, and a broken elevator in a five-story apartment complex. In the story, as the old woman passed the American couple on the stairs the conversations about the broken elevator would always be brought up. The American couple wanted to have a confrontation with the landlord to fix it now, but the woman just wanted to acknowledge that there was an obstacle now and maybe one day it would be fixed. The woman did not want to comfort the landlord feeling that she would seem critical of the landlord’s job performance. Right now as we are in the (to me stupid word) “woked” culture (for dumbing down a moment to a single word/phrase does no justice and allows opponents to attack freely) the movie industries will reflect the movement. So, the question I need to ask the people, like Bill Maher, are you complaining because they want escapism movies back now, or are they just mention the 2021 movie genre has a noticeable similar theme? Because if it is the former then Bill Maher you could lead an effort to produce escapism movies again. When an individual has the potential/connections but refuses to be kinetic and act on their commentary then they serve zero means but to always be upset by something. IMO: escapism cinema should be a reward when humanity finally confronts its willingness to good down a path of extinction.
Reply“Academy nominations used to say, look what great movies we make. Now they say, look what good people we are.”
Maher, slicing up hollywood lameness with a fine katana.
Reply“Nowadays movies are no longer about entertainment. They’re about suffering -specifically, YOURS.”
I wonder if we could get Bill and his writing team to devote some spare time to writing better movies 🤷🏿♂️🤔
ReplyChicago 7 is good and not so sad movie but BOOMER Bill: “It’s woke propaganda!!!! Well go watch Avengers X, Transformers or netflix. Cos all great films like Citizen Kane, Schindlers list, Chinatown are not sad and not aware of social issues… 😉
Reply“it’s such an odd psychological quirk that liberals have to always want to be sad.. could it be because, being sad allows you to feel like you’re actually doing something without actually having to do ANYTHING?”
– shots fired…at dumb liberals.
ReplyLiberals are ruining America!! 🇺🇸
ReplyWhat no Lion?
ReplyI thought Manc was great. Really old school filmmaking except the actors aren’t 1940’s stiff, the dialogue is sharp and character driven. Sure it’s slow and requires multiple views to get it all but it just shows you how lean our attention spans are. Promising Young Woman was great also. Didn’t see the others. I get Bill’s sentiment but there’s always been movies like this and most of the time they sucked. Anyone remember Crash?
Replyno interest in 2021 movies or Oscars. equality seems to be more important than quality..
ReplyI was on a boat on a huge lake and had to shit really bad, so I dropped anchor, hiked into the woods, and shit. I buried it, wiped my ass with leaves, and sailed on. Who cares?
ReplyI used to love going to the movies a long time ago. But now I haven’t seen a movie in years. I’m tired of giving money to people who’s soul purpose is to make me feel like shit. And also, please just stop it with the super-hero bullshit for a while. Some of us would actually like to watch something else for a change.
Reply*Nomadland* – main character finds joy and freedom in her nomad life and wouldn’t replace it for anything.
*Promising young woman* – Tarantinoesque fun film with a bitter-sweet (and dare i say hilarious) ending
*Judas and the Black messiah* – The departed literally (and imho better)
*Trial of the Chicago 7* – it’s fucking Aaron Sorkin courtroom drama, if you liked “to kill a mockingbird” and “12 angry man” – this is basically it.
*The Father* – an original and creative way of depicting alzheimer’s through the perspective of man suffering from alzheimer’s, very tough to call it depressing and sad when it’s portrayed by Anthony Hopkins who gives such a powerful and engaging performance.
*Minari* – the grandma survives (her performance is the fucking light of the movie, that is pretty light as it is) and her buring down the barn saves her daughters marriage and the family – cathartic and happy ending.
So fuck off Bill, your writers room needs to watch the movies before they pull criticism out of their ass.
ReplyBill is a classic Democrat. Hes the only democrat I respect
ReplyYep, can’t watch movies anymore.
ReplyYall.are hard to please. Seems like he’s mad bc the movies aren’t as light. In subject or cast and the issues most of them address makes white people uncomfortable. How can it be entertaining if I’m the guilty one?
ReplyI miss comedies. Not crappy Romcoms. Just straight-up comedies like we had in the 80s and 90s.
ReplyWas quite interested to watch Promising Young Woman, but the big spoiler Bill just told put me off a little
ReplyWow. A couple of those comments cut fairly deep. I get it though but its purely bad luck.
ReplyI never saw him complaining so harshly about the Oscars when they honored mostly pointless White movies. Like pretty much every Oscar’s before
ReplyFirst year I haven’t seen any of the movies up for best picture
ReplySoul was a great film. It should have gotten a best pic nom.
Replybill wasn’t long ago you were complaining about comic book movies? they still suck but escapism? they have that.
ReplyShout out to a Dratch!
ReplyI like Arnold….saying ‘arl be back’
ReplyEr, spoilers!
ReplyMany of these movies were probably green lit long before the pandemic.
ReplyHow the hell am I starting to agree with Bill Maher.
ReplyWhat’s he whining about, the Trial of the Chicago Seven was HILARIOUS. Sasha Baron Cohen’s character killed it. And by “it”, I don’t mean “the leader of the Black Panthers”.
ReplyIt has been said that the Oscars (Debbies?) are a reflection of the national zeitgeist… Gee, after Trump, ya think??!
Reply. could it be that being sad is whats happening to the WHOLE world ! It seems Bill, even you are running out of things to moan about . .
ReplyThank you! I wanted so bad to escape 2020 even for an hour with new entertainment and most of it just depressed me and everyone more. Like damn give us all a break!!
ReplyGreat piece. Amusing points
ReplyI’m just waiting for Dune.
ReplyHaven’t watched a Hollywood movie made in the last decade. Haven’t watched the Oscars since about 2000 either. No interest. This whole generation is insufferable. God help us.
ReplyHe’s correct. I’m a super liberal film buff myself but, wow, what a lame collection of nominees this year. And not particularly amazing films either (although Sound of Metal was amazing). Would it kill the academy to nominate a comedy or an action movie? Occasionally those genres do produce “good films.” 🍿
ReplyMhm, it’s… amazing how depressing modern art has gotten. Like, I suspect half the reason GvK got so many tickets sold was… well, it’s about a giant ape fighting a giant lizard. How much more do you need?
ReplyAnyone who calls themselves “woke” is ignorant.
Reply“you know the part of the show when you got up and went to the bathroom”
ReplyI find it hilarious that Promising Young Woman is getting the acclaim. It’s a rip-off of Jett, Cinemax decided that show was too racy to renew.
ReplyMost of the audience members that are cheering are part of the crowd that he is criticizing.
ReplyThere’s also international movies…you could try those 🙂
Reply…and the Oscar goes to: every nominee. Ranking is racist. Remember.🤣
ReplySPOILER ALERT !!!!!!! 🚨
ReplyCould it be that America has a history of escapism and that’s why we have so many “troubles”?
ReplyMarxist demoralisation.
ReplyThese are probably pretty good movies, but it really doesn’t matter. The same month they put out their list showing how righteous they are, Scott Rudin gets called out for being a monster. One of their most famous and successful producers. Seen at the Academy Awards many times, is absolute abusive shit, oh and everyone knew it for decades. Hyper spastic hypocritical flailings from a community that thrives on power and power dynamics. Hollywood is so crippled with dissonance they have become absurd.
ReplyBill just took the words right outta my mouth
ReplyDid Bill just realize this now? Films have been dark and depressing now for years.
ReplyAs Dido once said in her song See You When You’re 40: “Not sad because you lost me, but sad because you though it was cool to be sad”
ReplyThe audience screws up his monologues
ReplyNot so funny this time and a bit arrogant with the audience
ReplyCan we get rid of the audience? After seeing Bill monologue solo, they’re really just getting in his way. Keep the panel, but the audience is just a bunch of interrupting crap that is annoying now that I know what he’s like without it.
ReplyBill, sometimes you can be a real Debbie Downer.
ReplyGetem Bill
ReplyOK, so I agree with Bill here, but it’s funny to me that he is crying out for “fun escapism”… Yet I seem to remember a new rules segment from the past where he sits bitching about how people love Marvel movies and comic book shit. That’s fun escapism for those people… Yet you complained about it too 😂
ReplySo much disrespect for the film industry, which he’s part of. So, sad movies are no good but fun action movies are no good either?
ReplyAnd what’s Bill’s example of acceptable entertainment, older films that are even more depressing? Schindler’s List, really??
So far Maher’s show is the most depressing thing I’ve watched today. Meanwhile, the Oscars have nominated Pixar’s Soul and Tenet for this year’s ceremony. Are those not ‘upbeat’ enough?
You have no idea what depressing means until you’ve read “The Mars Room,” by Rachel Kushner. How did that worst book of all time even get published?
ReplyThat isn’t overpriced popcorn you’re getting in the theaters, but expired anti-depressants cooked up, buttered, and heavily salted so that they almost look like popcorn.
ReplyHowever, they don’t almost taste like crap, they taste just as bad as one would expect cooked up , buttered, and heavily salted expired anti-depressants to taste – absolutely repulsive.
I like the idea of disillusionment, actually.
ReplyPeople are upset about this segment over on Twitter? I was expecting something at least somewhat controversial.
ReplyWorst monologue ever.
He has clearly not watched any of these movies. Most of them have happy endings, the plot elements he cited for a lot of them being “downers” mostly took place before the climax and/or resolution of the movie, it’s called conflict, and basically every single story has it.
Also why is he asking for escapist movies when he’s just gonna crap all over them too? He hates escapist movies, he’s done monologues hating on them too.
And I noticed in those screenshots of movies he appears to like because he said “Hollywood used to know how to make movies” the first one was The Grapes of Wrath! One of the most downer movies of all time!
He clearly doesn’t know what he’s talking about. This is his most hypocritical, ignorant and stupid monologue ever. His lack of self awareness is off the charts here.
ReplyAll these people talking shit haven’t even seen any of these movies. Trial of the Chicago 7 was a black comedy
ReplyIn this matter I have a different opinion, Bill!
ReplyI feel the need to see Master and Commander for the tenth time. Maybe some Out of Africa and The Full Monty too.
ReplyYou don’t have to ignore social justice to be entertaining; likewise, you don’t have to berate or bore people to send a message. You know it has gotten to be a strange time when imagination is a little stunted in Hollywood.
ReplyYou forget that the oscars is not indicative of the films available to see. Especially during a pandemic. Chill out Bill, you’re wrong this time.
ReplyHollywood-where they’ll pay an actor $10 million dollars to portray someone who is starving.
ReplyI’m a fan of Bill Maher, but I cringe any time he tries to talk about film, because he doesn’t seem to have any idea what he’s talking about. It’s obvious to me he just hates movies, no matter the genre. Here he’s doing a bit where he’s whining about dramas with depressing subject matter and saying, “We just want a little escapism!” But then you’ll find him on another night ragging on superhero movies, ragging on Star Wars, ragging on action movies , ragging on movies about getaway drivers (the one where he tries to say Drive and The Fast and the Furious are similar films, just an example of how ignorant he is on the subject), and ragging on people who enjoy them. At this point it would be quicker for him to state what kind of movies he doesn’t have a problem with.
ReplyWhen is Bill gonna realize that it’s his party that’s causing this garbage culture…?
ReplyObviously he didn’t see any of the movies.
ReplyTrue—where’s the comedy? Thank goodness for this show…
ReplyThanks for spoiling all those movies, dickhead! Seriously, Bill, how come you don’t respect your audience enough to not give away the endings of those films. It truly shows what an old fart you’ve become by raging against wokeness and more importantly being unable to say SPOILERS before spoiling something, like every young Youtuber is able to.
ReplyBill is dropping some fire here..
ReplyBill since it’s not your story your not entertained. Right
ReplyI hate Bill’s audience, they truly suck
ReplyDidn’t think the 2021 Oscars were going to be that depressing.
Sorry they couldn’t come up with more “light in the loafers” movies like La La Land. 😩
ReplyLibs sure jumped their way to the front of the vaccine lines? Got that PPP money. Woke, alright, just enuf.
ReplyPropaganda outlet has become too obvious for all to see. They’re in business to own the narrative, not entertainment
ReplyI liked the Trial of the Chicago 7!
ReplyDude, this segment cracked me up! Loool ….” not Godzilla vs. Kong, and his crippling battle with depression.”
ReplySo, so true.
ReplyLets be honest, the reason there were no entertaining movies in 2020 is because the owners of said movies did not want to have a box office of zero so they pushed them back to 2021 or 2022. So the movies people don’t go to the theatre to see they wait for them to show up on redbox and wait to get a $1 off coupon to rent them was all that was left…
ReplyI was so disappointed that “The Immigrant Who Sit in a Coffee Can” didn’t get any nominations.
ReplyFinally! I can enjoy you again! #logic
ReplyPretty good Bill!
ReplyAll the happy films are waiting for theatres to open worldwide so they can MAKE THEIR iNVESTMENT BACK.
ReplyCan’t wait for Bill to get rid of his Stepford audience. The whole thing seems forced and unnatural. Almost as if he demands the engagement regardless of how good the joke is.
Replysomebodies joining the “i’m becoming an old boomer and everything was so much better in the old days” entourage. dude, this is 10 movies out of thousands of films and tv shows all the major platforms have been releasing non-stop. there’s plenty of “entertainment” available.
ReplyI hadn’t heard of these movies. Over, let’s go conservative,1 year. I shouldn’t chalk up a reason. Bill made a good point.
ReplyI want to see Godzilla vs Kong
ReplyAbsolutely…I go to movies to have fun and feel good…Real life sucks sometimes so why go to a movie and be depressed!! Right on Maher!!!!
ReplyBill is getting old and that’s pretty evident on the way he goes on nonsensical rants.
Why the fuck should film be uplifting or just entertainment?!
ReplyCC: NPR.
ReplyMaher would love the Grammy’s
ReplyIs he calling for the 21st centuries Buzby Berkley?
ReplyAction is preceded by empathy.
ReplyIn 1939 during the depression some of the best movies ever were made. Now, during a pandemic, the worst seems to have come out. What gives?
ReplyVirtue signaling is coming for the movies.
ReplyI like Bill, he’s funny, but his church cracks aren’t, i don’t feel guilty, he’s speaking from a jaded Catholic past, which is a whole Different form of Christianity.
ReplyIts great commedy but at least some conversations are happening through the silver screen instead of the normal trying to pretend this world is not a dumpster fire for so many people.
ReplyBill, the only way that people will know that there are people who live in vans is if they see them on the screen. Even the it it unlikely that it will be on the big screen as that would mean leaving their bubble.
ReplyIt’s progressive liberals pushing wokeness, not conservatives. They’re the ones fucking up society
ReplyHe’s horrible.
ReplyActually, I always thought the ‘foreign films’ category was where everybody took their Oscar potty-breaks?
This show is at least as culturally educational as the Oscar contenders. 🙂
Time to finish my draft of “Kong: My Lifelong Battle with Depression and Body Issues…” I’mma make this shit OSCAR-worthy!!
ReplyThanks Bill. I needed this. I’m usually pretty big on movies, but I’ve never even heard of these best picture nominees! It’s like the academy pulled them out of their ass (or a vault)!
ReplyAnd don’t get me started on the scourge that is wokeness! I’ve swore to spend as little money as possible on anything associated with THOSE people, especially Disney! Be it movies or TV or whatever the hell passes for Marvel and DC Comics these days.
JUSTICE. MUST. BE. SERVED.
I still think the Wizard of Oz is one of the best movies ever made. It’s actually a story about us. Just like the old book. We are “Dorothy” and all the characters are aspects of her/us. Same with the old book (we are “god”). Except the Dorothy version is more accurate. That “god” part of us is feminine energy (heart, depth, emotion, “spirit” … it’s our “wildness,” it’s freedom). Our masculine energy is more the physical (superficial, control-y). See which our world has more of. All this dumbf*ckedness is masculine energy on steroids, so very contemptuous of its feminine energy (thank you, religion). That results in self-loathing (hating just part of yourself isn’t a thing) and ultimately world destruction. Oops, didn’t mean to be a “debbie.” But we need more “Noah’s” out there endeavoring to truly wake us the f*ck up. This is the answer. Sit with it (that’s feminine energy, stillness/listening…like the old book says, “be still and know.”) Think of it this way. Violence and corruption. The majority of those two things come from male ppl putting their crap upon those who are ignorant/innocent, vulnerable or “weak.” Vulnerability is feminine energy. Mass shootings often done by a religious one. Thing is, when we hate someone, want to harm them, it’s usually because we see in them something that we hate in OURSELVES. Think about the worst potus in history, how he never wanted to admit he was wrong, wanted ppl to always see him as strong… That is, he hated the thought of being “weak”(feminine/vulnerable). Just think about it. Plz endeavor to wake up to what is truly “wrong” with us. Why we are seemingly indifferent to the destruction of the planet that feeds us. And see how we tend to work to destroy that which we hate. Even if subconsciously.
Reply“Being sad let’s you feel like you’re doing something about a problem without having to actually do something.”
Boom
ReplyI, as a liberal anti-Trump normal person, have had enough of this woke shit. I don’t want boring depressing garbage on my TV screen made by talentless diversity hires and “You go girl” high-fivers. Can we get back to Hollywood actually trying to make money by making things people actually want to watch?
ReplyMORE TRUTH FROM BILL!!! BILL MAHER IS THE BEST!!!
ReplyYou misread Nomadland. She liked her life. She was initially put into it against her own desire but she preferred it when she was given a choice. She freely chose freedom and independence over comfort, stability and dependence. One of the themes seemed to be about letting go of some things.
ReplySadness is rebellion – Lebanon Hanover
ReplyReal Time comes on, I go Zzzz Zzzz
ReplyBill you had many bad takes… But this ones the worst!! Please retire…
Replypeople write what they know, pain.
ReplyYes the Debbie’s are a difficult experience to watch much less listen too! But hey, it’s incredible what $$$ can buy! Bad acting, bad stories, bad hairdos & clothing! Really they should get an Oscar for being God awful!
ReplySchindler’s List, The Pianist, The English Patient, My Left Foot, Ordinary People… seems to me that Hollywood has a long, long tradition of making sad movies about white people as oscar bait but when the academy starts recognizing women and people of color and their contributions to movies, suddenly it’s too sad, it’s virtue signaling 🙄, Hollywood is trying too hard to be woke. Oscar movies have always been boring or sad. If Bill Maher wants to see a Michael Bay movie, those movies are readily available. This segment was so complain-y…wish he would use his platform to gripe about more important things. This was not his best message.
Replythe fact that every still image in his montage toward the end is pulled from movies that are often melancholic downers addressing societal issues like racism, fascism, poverty, and abuse, while he’s talking about how Hollywood USED TO know how to make GOOD movies, as a means of criticizing the current crop of not just oscar nominated movies but HOLLYWOOD as a whole for making too many movies addressing societal issues through melancholic or emotional narratives is SOOOOOO oblivious…
For a moment I pitied him for being such a miserable, miserly old fuck, and then he made the “In Memorium” joke that he dragged out for FAR too long and I was back to hoping he died falling into a vat of industrial acid.
And the “Liberals only like sad movies because it lets them feel like they’re doing something about the issues while really just ignoring them” would actually be a decent criticism of liberalism coming from ANYBODY ELSE.
What a despicable fuck.
ReplyI am a liberal but I don’t even know any liberals who are like the ones Mahr constantly refers to. Must be Hollywood studio liberals huh. Sad or glad or angry I just want to be entertained
ReplyWe could have used this 4 years ago Bill. You can’t get “independent thinker” points if you only speak up when it’s no longer relevant.
ReplySo true. MANK is the only movie that is actually good and Gary Oldman did a really good damn job. The other movies are just boring.
ReplyBill Maher, more important now than ever before.
Replyhe nailed it, he understood better than you obviously! Kong is a representation of the caged beast or Zoo’s of the world. It’s depressing and a reminder of how cruel humanity is and in the end the solution is to leave and go home in a completely different world and environment where we came from. Not here. So solution for cruelty is to flee or be captured and caged. You haven’t even watched the movie. It has little to do with a fight between a lizard and ape. It’s the metaphorical battle between RH negative and RH positive blood types. Neanderthal and crowmag, the never ending battle of the vampires and werewolves or the constant fight of the brothers. This is why Cain killed able and why the battle continues from the occupied territories of native apes and reptilian due to having the traits of a reptile as metaphorical wolves or crowmag; who hunt the blood sucking neanderthal vampires who are primitive apes compared to crowmag and who stole the woman and children of crowmag to rape and eat some of them but ultimately the hybrid race resulted and that has violence instead of love is the result. This is the very reason we exist and I recommend Robert Sephre on YouTube for evidence from a real scientific view and a real true anthropologist. Learn the deeper meaning and understand! It is very depressing! See profile of a super predator by Danny for a more accurate representation and reconstruction of Neanderthal. You will be suprised to know the truth! They were hunter killers. Crowmag were the same as we see today unchanged white man bearded with chin. Came here from another world and landed bringing agricultural and civilization. Research it! It’s written in stone!
ReplySo Bill’s whole gimmick now is just “THINGS WERE BETTER BACK IN MY DAY”?
ReplyNot a single movie nominated for an Oscar do I have the slightest desire to see. Very different from 2020, except for best picture, which sucked. It’s like Bill Maher’s monologue here…boring.
Replygood work bill
ReplyLet him with is without sin cast the first stone. No, Mr. Maher, your “Debbie Rule” diatribe was not a laughter filled stroll down Laugh Alley. It was a drunken crawl into Coronavirus Redux Cul-de-Sac.
ReplyI love how he talks about Hollywood and narcissism as if he is somehow removed from it. 🙄
ReplyThis guy flip flops daily. Can’t have it both ways.
ReplyEarth to Bill: Prestige Dramas have always been big with the awards shows. Nothing’s stopping you from going to see Hobbs & Shaw if you just want easy popcorn thrills.
ReplyFrom your lips to Wokeworlds ears. Seriously!
ReplyBill Maher is starting to sound like Andy Rooney.
ReplyThis is absolute garbage from Bill and I am shocked at the support from the crowd and the comments here.
ReplyFilms nominated at the Oscars have nothing to do with “woke” or “depressing” or any of the other epithets he throws out here.
They are nominated because they are WELL MADE films.
Is it so hard to understand that?
Bill has been gradually swinging right these last few years – he’s been rightfully pointing out the weaknesses in the Dems but when he’s REACHING so hard in a segment like this to blame “Hollywood elites” for depressing films, he has officially jumped the shark.
Seriously Bill, you have spent too much time with your “Friend” Ann C. – your mind is warped.
You are no longer on the side of good, I just wish your adoring audience would come to their fucking senses.
Then, there’s a chance you might actually wake the fuck up.
Goodbye Bill, you were good….for a while.
If any year merited a bumper crop of depressing films, it was 2020. And guess what, Bill? Some of us are grown up enough to appreciate downbeat movies.

ReplyAfter many years I am now done with Maher. He’s just another grumpy, bitter, repetitive ‘comic ‘. And worsen than letterman in his nastiness. And he talks too much. And he has annoying guests. Or is it thw format that’s annoying?
Replyyeah, well I give a big thumbs down to Bill’s transformation into Donald Trump over the last year and how bad his show has become.
Reply“Darker” films generally get more critical acclaim and it’s been that way for a while. Acting like this is a strange new phenomenon is disingenuous.
ReplyHe’s talking with alot of “get off my lawn” vibe…Smh he talks as if there aren’t plenty of entertaining movies still out there are get nominated year after year AND there’s also trend of sad movies as far as one can remember getting nominated for Oscars!
Any movie can sound miserable if phrased in certain kind of way. And also talking like Hollywood is “monolithic” with directors with exact kind of taste and genres being made. Also half the movies he complained about are real life stories! How the fuck does he thinks they need to end?? 🙄🙄
There are more diverse GOOD stories being put to screen recently and many people are experiencing new perspectives! Which is always good. Just look at the nomination list from recent years. There are all kinds of genres and stories in there!
And I bet 90% of people agreeing with him on this in the comments don’t approve of Parasite winning either. If they do then this whole point is baseless cause that movie was hilarious, entertaining AND powerful af! But if you still got the problem with it then my guy…I know who you are…
PS: last year was such a mess for movies not many could release them and many couldn’t watch them too. People can still watch their Micheal bay’s and Fast and Furious stop crying about stupid shit.
ReplyWtf is he talking about? It seems like he watched none of the films at all. Judas and Chicago 7 are very entertaining, Sound of Metal and Nomadland aren’t just sad, but also inspiring and Minari is actually really sweet and positive.
On top of that, last year Parasite won, one of the most entertaining films, I’ve ever seen! A satirical thriller about class division in Korea. And then he says, back then films weren’t just sad, but also entertaining, and shows stills from Schindler’s List and 12 Years a Slave! What the heck???
ReplyThis made me want to watch the nominated movies 😀 good set though
ReplyConstant claping is excruciatingly irritating. Is this how it feels to watch tv? Do boomers really?
ReplyYou can’t have your cake and eat it too Bill.
ReplyYes. Affordable housing please.
ReplyYour right bill not one good movie has come out in yearssss, fuck hollywood
ReplyDeath brings out the something in us alright!
ReplyPerhaps weve been living on borrowed time. Gloomy movies are likely merely the symptoms, our lifestyle the cause. Past pandemics have demonstrated this effect on culture. Posted something about it here but my 2 earlier comments got deleted lol!
Yes. I won’t be watching Any of those movies.
ReplyThe existence of Jo Jo Rabbit, an oscar nominated 2019 movie where the main character’s imaginary friend is Hitler, proves you wrong on both “movies are too woke nowadays” & “movies are not entertaining nowadays”
ReplyI understand and also agree that “mean” can be funny, but Maher is not. He is just blah.
ReplyWhy I don’t do movies.
ReplyI don’t know thought Chicago seven was a pretty upbeat at times
ReplyYou think you could have maybe not spoiled all these movies that only recently come out?
ReplyYou’re making fun of sad people? What a jerkofff
ReplyNo worries. The Beatles are coming! THE BEATLES ARE COMING!
ReplyYou could make the depression case for all those films he showed clips of too. I thought Nomadland was very good and would fit well within the history of those films in the clips.
ReplyIt’s obvious Bill has an issue with Nomadland and that’s ok but it doesn’t make it an unimportant film.
Not so long ago Bill complained about omnipresence of superheroes and robots… Now that? What kind of film does he actually want? I’m lost.
ReplyFeeling sad: the liberal equivalent of prayer.
Replywasn’t it a weird year though where most of the crowd pleasers. and bet some if the movies he mentioned as good would be considered woke. I mean judus and the black messiah and do the right thing in a similar wheel house
Reply“Hollywood is the place to go if you are an egomaniac looking to fill that hole from your childhood with applause” sounds like a good reason not to go into the entertainment biz, f** Hollywood, all about $$ and devoid of any intellectually driven scripts about interesting people, I would think of all the films that shined last year was Mank, great film & about ‘smart’ people though a bit twisted
ReplyNew Rule: Bill Maher has to stop assuming everyone finds his easily wounded rich white dude sensibilities as deeply fascinating as he does.
ReplyWho needs movies or TV when there’s YouTube? If you still own a TV and go to the movies you’re getting what you deserve – cinema for sheep.
ReplyUntil you talk about the solutions to the problems (see Andrew Yang), you’re part of them – and yes, “them” too.
You are correct about movies coming from Hollywood these days. The best movies are the foreign films.
Bill, is there affordable house in your neighborhood? Show us your house or at least your neighborhood. How about opening a garbage dump or a trash recycling site next to your house.
ReplyWe’re one year closer to “ASS” taking home best picture.
ReplyHahahaha!!!!!! Best of Bill I’ve seen in a long time…..
ReplySpecifically white liberals Bill. Terrible moviemaking today. I don’t watch anymore. My wife and I watch 80s 90s early 2000s movies. -39yr old millennial
ReplyI put this on closed caption and turn off the sound. Eliminates the fake, canned laughter which ruins some otherwise decent commentary.
ReplyHollywood is only concerned about making “important” films with a statement these days
ReplyHis crowds just flat out suck. Screen your audience, dude. Or tell them how to fucking shut up and not ruin your closing monologue.
ReplyIt appears the Hollywood is trying to lower the morale of the whole country. I wonder why they would so that?
Reply0:21 I don’t see what’s wrong with the movie nominees. Trial of Chicago 7 was absolutely fascinating and educational at the same time. Rare.
ReplyIf your movie is so woke how come i m falling asleep? 😂😂😂
Reply6:00 Many of the “woke” progressives do in fact fight for that [affordable housing].
Reply“Can we get some escapist, comfort food?”
Reply*Proceeds to show Schindler’s List, Milk and 12 Years A Slave*
“Woke” literally means, no longer excepting the corrupt establishment BS. They’ve turned it around and made it a bad word. Even so called progressives are falling for it now. Bill is just propagating that message, telling them basically to shut up. Just another stenographer for the wealthy establishment. Bill has become the “get off my lawn” old guy. Sad to see…
ReplyWho cares anymore about the Radical woke Left award shows?
ReplySO TRUE!!!!!!!!!
ReplyI hate movies about cancer, war, racism, murder, death… STFU and give me American Pie 17 😂
Funny how he never complained when they were attacking anything conservative but now that they’ve gone way off the deep end and affects him then he bitches. BTW, do they flash an “Applause” sign? That sounded so fake. His audience is made up of the very woke boneheads he ranting about.
ReplyThe MCU movies and shows are our escapism, Bill bashes them too. Pick a lane man.
ReplyBloody hell I wish this show was shown in the UK, laughing so hard I’m crying.
ReplyOK Boomer.
ReplyBill Maher: Make a less depressing and more entertaining movies
ReplyBill Maher: shows a list of Milk, Schindler’s list, and 12 years a slave
If you’re movie is so woke how come I’m falling asleep lol
ReplyI used to like Bill Maher, but he’s turned into such a whiny bitch. Nomadland, for example, isn’t some “woke“ story about the tragedy of homelessness. It’s a story about a person who chooses to be a nomad. Would she have chosen differently if her circumstances were different? Maybe. It’s a complex story, Bill. Jesus! Do you want to see depressing movie: Titanic. Nomadland was a beautiful, true movie. The sound of metal was intense, but it wasn’t trying to blame anybody for anything. The Trial of the Chicago 7 Was the same kind of bullshit, Hollywood mythologizing we’ve been getting forever. It was entertaining, but overly woke? Hardly. Anyway, you think there was plenty of right wing bullshit for Bill Maher to take a out. Just because Trump lost the election doesn’t mean his army of a-holes aren’t still trying to ruin the world.
ReplyIf your movie is woke how come I’m falling asleep
ReplyBecause your old and have an attention span of a goldfish
These damn snowflakes, bitching about how there are no happy movies anymore… Oh wait, it’s the old guy crying now, because movies make him sad 🙁 and he wants fun, relaxing movies instead… And it’s the same guy that trashes Marvel movies… Way to go Bill
Reply“Did they all decide to quit cocaine at the same time”. Actually, they had to cause there’s a pandemic and the sources are rare now.
ReplyThey dont make classic music too like the 60’s and 70’s.
ReplyLove you Bill!!
ReplyDumbest new rule so far. Some of these movies are actually extraordinary. Dummies can continue to watch their superheroes shit.
ReplyBill Maher has officially turned into a cranky, complaining old man. First of all, there have been plenty of very entertaining, upbeat escapist movies out in 2020. Huge hits, too. Maybe Bill’s not connected enough to pop culture anymore to have heard of them. Second, the Oscars have ALWAYS nominated the more serious, topical films for Best Picture. The running joke in Hollywood is that if you want to win an award, just make a depressing Holocaust movie. (Notice in Bill’s montage of his preferred movies, he showed “Schindler’s List”? I rest my case.) Nothing has changed. Bill’s just turned into curmudgeon.
ReplyBill went full on old geezer.
ReplyDemocrats for Trump. We miss him
ReplyI have been a long time fan of Bill’s but honestly he’s like barely a step above Greg Gutfeld at this point.
Replythis whole rant is just stupid. hes an idiot! and fuck him for spoiling promising young women and minari for people who aint seen them. and these films were escapism for a lot of us over the past year.
ReplyThis whole segment made me sad. The irony
ReplyThe 21st century sucks!
ReplyHey Bill don’t forget these are your people you asked for it you got it
ReplyMaybe doing things with the purpose of feeling sad and pitiful is the liberal’s version of the conservative’s prayers. Unfortunately, it has the same level of efficacy. None!
ReplyLEts make it mandatory to watch blazing saddles
ReplyReally, really weak message. Film makers make the movies they want. Consumers see the movies they want. Critics praise the movies they want. It’s called ‘freedom’. No one is decreeing from on high that all Best Motion Picture nominees must be depressing; that’s just the collective will of the nominators. There are plenty of comedies and other feel-food movies out there. And I doubt Bill even watched any of these films. If he didn’t have anything substantive to say, he should have just skipped this week’s New Rules segment instead of grandstanding about a non-issue.
ReplyWoke hollywood means Broke hollywood, yeaaaaaa
ReplyNailed it! You would think with enough economic related issues and covid wed get something uplifting and even inspiring to raise moral.
Hollywood does movies to virtue signal for sure. This is why a lot of popular movie sequels and remakes like terminator, Ghostbusters 2016, james bond and even star wars is turning fans away. We dont want our movies politicised and good original characters replaced or ridiculed.
ReplyHI Bill! 53-y/o here. Love your show! Um, I couldn’t wait to see “Promising Young Female,” & was aghast you’d divulged the ending. I understand why you did this (to help make your point about movies being downers), but I NEVER reveal an ending w/o a spoiler alert of some kind. Years ago I couldn’t wait to take a college class in detective story fiction & was all excited for it to start in the fall (there was 1 story we were to read 2x to see how IT was done) — & Time magazine divulged that story’s SURPISE in its opening paragraphs when discussing the author that summer. That has stayed with me. Please don’t do this again, buddy. PLEASE! / Glenn Allen
ReplyP.S. I ended up watching “Promising Young Female” anyway & you didn’t fully divulge the ending. I thought it was GREAT, btw. It was not a downer (its protagonist achieved her goal, btw). I was thrilled with it, but PLEASE don’t divulge movie endings again, OK? PLEASE, BILL….! 🙂
Replyare they paid to laugh? genuinely asking
ReplyDoes his studio (and many watching here or on HBO) audience realize he’s making fun of them! That’s why I love you Bill.
ReplyI nominate “Hollywood is still the number one place to go if you’re an egomaniac looking to fill that hole from your childhood with applause.” as Bill’s funniest and most honest line of the year!!!
ReplyBill Maher qualifies for a DEBBIE AWARD as well.
Reply“Films these days are so depressing…what happened to the good old upbeat films of ….Grapes of Wrath ….and Schindler’s list.”
ReplyLol bill can’t be this stupid
I’m trying to make an old fashioned Romantic Comedy with a happy ending, and I’m being told by the Major Studios… it’s not woke enough!
Reply“When escapism becomes reality.”
ReplyKing of liberals making fun of liberal things while woke audience laughs and applauds lol
ReplyI really hate it when he vents about the entertainment industry. 😒 he really hates art of all kinds. He’s like how dare anyone enjoy entertainment that’s not about me. His narcissism really peaks when it comes to music, movies, art, or comedians that aren’t him…
ReplyThe moment the Oscars made a checklist mandatory for who gets in and who gets left out on a nomination, artistic merit finally died along with what little creativity remained.
ReplyThe JOKER

ReplyLoss of job security via senority…
Be happy…pfffft HOLLYWOOD is reflecting the cesspool Mr. MILLIONAIRE.
Virtue signaling– yep. Reminds me of the whole Star Wars preachy nonsense…
ReplyThanks for the good word Bill, but you guys did this over 35 years. Good luck getting humor and entertainment back over guilt and woke shaming.
ReplySuicide is painless
ReplySocialism is brainless
Slavery is aimless
Play it again Sam
The only thing I agree with Bill Mayer is that both Republican’s And Democrats could give shit about housing people or helping them in any significant way. I also would like to mention that I saw Nomadland and I liked it, but then I’m just an average person who doesn’t feel compelled to rant about how this movie makes ME the bad person. I think these stories exist for a very good reason, but I could see how they would upset a multi-millionaire who loves those Republican tax breaks. Just admit it Bill you’re as liberal as that Manchin guy (Senator?).
ReplyAu revoir from Canada.
“The Grapes of Wrath?” Art imitates life. There’s no much to be escapist about right now.
ReplyYeah, hollywood used to know how to entertain us, and Bill used to know how to make people laugh without bitching about “wokeness” in every monologue like some fox news hack. I guess the times they are a changing…
ReplyBill doesn’t hate Marvel movies, he hates movies. He doesn’t grasp the role fiction plays in peoples lives. This is like listening to a vegan review the Outback Steakhouse. I watch every week but if you whine about things you don’t understand you will sound like a fool.
ReplySo so true, entertainment for the sake of enjoyment ! I won’t even read a book that depresses me and I love to read !
ReplyNew rule no pretending Bill Maher’s funny with his piped-in laughter
ReplyI’m just here for the clapping seals in the audience.
ReplyDems & the radical left are really just nutso ! lol
ReplyThe hypocrite is upset about the culture he helped create? His shekels must have been affected.
Reply“If your movie is so woke, how come I’m falling asleep”?
ReplyThats a good one. I’m going to use that one.
Thank you, Bill.
#Maher2024
F*ck off Bill. These films are great and entertaining. Feel free to stick to stories from 25 years ago, the rest of us enjoy films that are new, tell different stories and support a diverse group of filmmakers. Not just the movies that old dudes wanting to get richer allowed to be made. 💅🏼
ReplyLeave us the movies help us escape, help us feel good. And i just want to add cannot watch a movie whereby the scenes are shaky. Honestly i dont have to feel like i am running with the actor or camera man. I dont want to go into a seizure or come out nauseous or a blazing migraine. If i wanted to watch a shaky movie scene in movies and now some tv shows I’d rent the Blaire Witch Project
ReplyI can’t help wondering if Maher actually saw any of these films. Were they all lousy in the same way? It’s doubtful. I’ve only seen one of the films so far -“Promising Young Woman”-and I hated it but not for the reasons Maher cites.
ReplyDoes he think those were the only movies made last year?
ReplyIt’s good to see now that Trump’s gone…..I can watch Bill Maher again.
ReplyLMFAO. I’m an idiot who clicked on this shit when I just purchased Promising Young Woman but haven’t had time to watch it yet. BE WARNED. 🤦♀️
ReplySo now you’re against woke? When are you going to apologize for calling Sarah Palin a dumb See You Next Tuesday on national television?
ReplyIt’s the reason why most movies starring black people are about slavery or up to the civil rights movement. White liberals love suffering porn, and white liberals don’t get off on anything else as much as black suffering movies. Certainly black people don’t want to always see themselves portrayed in that manner.
ReplyBill. Hey. How are you bro. Do me a favor. Remind people that inflation caused by endless printing of money and quantitative easing forever, is a tax on everyone including the poor.
ReplySorry that history is sad, Bill. But we can change the past by ignoring it or whitewashing it though, right?
ReplyBill, when we make uplifting movies, you piss on them if they are based on superhero characters.
ReplyQUICK! Give Bill some low brow entertainment he might just start thinking.
ReplyThis was absolutely spot on. They have also dumbed down period piece dramas and made them all into soap operas for women.
ReplyAlso Bill: Marvel hero movies are stupid. It’s always about shiny something.
ReplyWhich one is the bad guy…its you 🤣
ReplyPolarisation in America society is a lesson for all democracies around the world.
ReplyIf you want to see a movie thats worth watching, find an international movie – some of the best film do not come from Hollywood.
ReplyReally sick of the constant liberal bashing. Is Bill a fucking red???
ReplyNothing inherently wrong with any of these films, but the spotlight being put solely on things of this category can definitely cause this type of reaction, which I definitely also understand. Minari was a wonderful experience for myself and those I know who have seen it, but not every film can be like it, or Nomadland, or any other one discussed here. Like we learn as kids, variety is the spice of life, and we need to shine the spotlight not only on stories that are deep, but dare I say it, the ones like Godzilla vs. Kong as well. I won’t be watching it, but someone will!
ReplyNice to see the body snatchers haven’t gotten to Bill yet.
ReplyI know Maher is joking, but when have the Oscars ever been uplifting? In the “old Hollywood” bit he shows a screen cap of “Schilndler’s List”, “Grapes of Wrath”, “Apocalypse Now”, “Milk”, as if they are not depressing. And if Maher thinks the current lineup is just depressing and not also entertaining then I don’t think he has really watched them. “The Father” is depressing, sure, but cinematically amazing. “Judas” also “Minari” very good, and especially the latter has a [SPOILER WARNING] happy ending. Granted, “Judas” doesn’t but I guess that is already clear before you start watching it, much like with “Titanic”. And “Trial of Chicago 7” is so hollywood-cliche with an ending so cheesy, it will give you lactose intolerance. Much like Hollywood always liked to make them… It’s not like much has changed, although I think that is what Maher’s point actually is.
ReplyMan why cant other comedians be more like Bill Maher 😂😂😂
ReplySometimes Maher’s bitching and whining is too much.
ReplyBill’s crowd is the worst. The applause interval is simply Trumpian. FFS.
Replythe reason some of black movies are downer is the same reason you don’t see a lot of black time traveler. a lot of history pretty rough
ReplyYou can’t have happy escapism in an industry controlled by self loathing white liberals. It’s antithetical to their mindset.
ReplyYes. Also miss when comefians made us laughs. Lucille Ball, three stooges non political bullshit. Or maybe, we need in these fake world films like la Strada, umberto D or bicycle’s thief. Real cinema us meaningful
ReplyNot one of the top 10 highest grossing films for 2020 are in this year’s Grammy best film nominations. Awards are basically useless now. Michael Bay was right. It’s all about the money. The only way we can judge what is the best picture.
Would have thought Bad Boys for Life or Sonic the Hedgehog would have gotten a nomination.
Replywtf: Bill forgot his past ‘virtue signaling’ career on *Politically Incorrect* smh
Replypoint of most of those movies is to take a problem or issue and bring awareness to Masses of ppl: so they can fix it or not
Reply“Actors are egomaniacs with zero self esteem.”- Gary Oldman
ReplyAs an actor I can confirm this.
He clearly hasn’t seen any of these films.
Reply“If your movie is so woke, how come I’m falling asleep”
Reply* mic drop *
You said it Bill! You always take the words right out my mouth. Literally the reason I can’t find anything to watch anymore 🤢
Unfortunately Kong is actually suffering from depression as well
ReplySJWs are depressing, just insane shitty poor me, poor depression muhhh opression. Oh and everything is racist, when its not, everything is ist and ism when its not.
ReplyHe really has
ReplyWell Done Bill
ReplyIs he still a Democrat ?
ReplyMank was good hahaha
ReplySpoiler alert! … wait … nobody’s seeing any of these films anyway lol ^^”
Replyyou can tell he’s from a different generation because thoughts movies were boring as hell. That doesn’t mean they aren’t good movies. I just don’t prefer them and that’s the thing. It’s all based on Perspective, what one finds interesting the other person doesn’t.
I actually really liked Godzilla Vs. Kong because it entertaining to watch. I got to see to giant creatures kick the shit out of each other and forget that this world the last year sucked. Isn’t that the point of the movies and TV? To give us something to distract us?
ReplySelf reflection
ReplyBill is the Canary in the Libtard mines. He gets it. I never thought I would follow him but I do. He’s hard left but see’s what the far far left is doing to our country. I never knew how brilliant he is. Guy is
ReplyAmazing.AND! It’s gonna be hard for the SJW’s to wack him on social media
I feel like he hasn’t even seen these movies he just complains to be pretencious.
ReplyA movies purpose isnt only to escape reality, sometimes it should portray an aspect of reality we dont normally see, those are the important films the oscars should put the spotlight on
ReplyAre you kidding me with this. He includes movies like Grapes of Wrath, Schindler’s List, and 12 years a Slave on his supposed movie list when those movies are also super depressing like some of these movies do today. If those movies were made today and nominated, he would be all over how depressing they are and begging for the “good ole days” Bill is so full of himself that I really can’t watch anymore.
ReplyThe Oscars have always been pretentious, they treat comedy like it’s a lesser form of film making.
ReplySo this non white thing,it´s really producing great films. Pfft. No but since they wont allow just white producers and a narrative that focus just on white people (Insane), does this mean that we won´t see movies like LA confidential,American beauty,The fighter, the town, talented mr.Ripley,Saving private ryan,Memento,The prestige,Road to perdition etc anymore? Best we can hope for is a Green mile with a token black mystery character who suffer for our sins? Okay. This will be real interesting if studios refuse to play ball and still dare to make masterpieces that will be excluded by the academy cause of white skin,it will make them look even dumber.
ReplyForced* diversity immediately lets me know whatever is projecting such nonsense is full of sh*t. The content, the producers, everyone in on it… all lazy, low tier thought individuals just full of sh*t. So just about every single network/producer of mainstream content. “We need 1 Korean women, 1 black man, 1 Polynesian women, 3 white women 2 lesbian 1 straight, 1 gay white man, 1 black women, 1 half-black man, a Hispanic couple …” We get it, you’re ” ‘really’ inclusive” … using people to diversify your stations color/melanin pallet so the obnoxiously loud 2% of the population that actually gives a sh*t doesn’t yell at you. Pathetic.
Replytbh I’m Liberal, and sick & tired of being made to feel guilty and depressed, but at the same time I wouldn’t wanna be passively ignorant, content with just working, paying taxes and dying, like most conservatives.
Liberals propose affordable housing all the freaking time, but it’s one of those things that ALWAYS gets shouted down as “the evil cancer of satan called socialism” by conservatives who don’t want to see anyone (that isn’t them); anywhere; ever, successful or happy.
ReplyThis is why I can’t wait for In the Heights this summer. It’s a fun musical that also touches on some real issues.
ReplyNot his best.
ReplyIsnt this the same guy who thought all the Marvel movies sucked?! But he wants escapism?!
Reply“Being sad let’s you feel like you’re doing something about a problem without having to actually do something.”
Some of the WORST PEOPLE I know will list off 100 different sad stories that they STRONGLY FEEL should be changed by government or society. Meanwhile, I KNOW these people. I’m like… “I know you. I know you really don’t give a damn about any of these people beyond the point of personal gain.”
One example – and I have many – is a person who grew up being the most spoiled and arrogant and meanspirited girl I ever knew. She treated her mom like garbage and yelled, cursed, took advantage of, manipulated, etc as much and as often as she needed to in order to get whatever it is that she wanted. For example, one time her mom went out of town and she threw a party. During the party her “friends” stole her mom’s $2,000 stereo system. When her mom came home to find this and got angry at her daughter, her daughter then began yelling at her mom, “Don’t you dare blame me for this! I didn’t ask them to steal it!”. This same girl verbally abused her younger sister her whole life, and now her younger sister is an alcoholic with low self esteem who barely makes a living to provide for her kids. Much of that is her younger sister’s fault of course but she is a broken person internally, largely from the decades of daily verbal abuse from her older sister who would call her worthless, ugly, fat, annoying, etc. This same girl stole thousands of dollars from her friends and boyfriend and even had a false “college graduation party” so the rest of her family would send her monetary gifts. There is much more as well. She’s mean and nasty, very intolerant of most people, is verbally abusive towards her weak husband and has even already begun spreading rumors that HE is abusive towards HER to turn people against him should things go south… yet somehow she believes that she is a good person. She will cry, play victim, desperately plead her case, and more. Very manipulative and calculating. Yet this girl will tell you all of the “good causes” she supports. It’s like a laundry list of leftist talking points with her (no, I am not a Republican). She’s a “feminist”. She’s “anti-racist”. She’s “anti-rich”. She’s “pro-diversity”. You name it, she claims it as her position.
This is what I notice about nearly every activist I know (not every activist in the world). It’s as if they’re deeply awful people and the only way they know how to appear to be good people is to take a cause that is obviously good on the surface and then claim to stand with it. Likely even berate other people for not being it or enough of it. “You’re a racist!” “You’re a _____phobe!” The extent of their ability to “be good” is to stand under the banner of things that are exceedingly obvious to most people as being good causes, and then be nasty towards other people under that banner. It’s a cover to be hateful and nasty – like they truly are down to the core of their being – but still appear to be good to other people.
ReplyDid you have to open this by spoiling every one of the movies that us non-SAG poor people haven’t been shipped free copies of.
ReplyThat’s why Godzilla vs Kong is doing so well, because it’s escapist FUN‼️ 🦖 VS 🐵
ReplyHis writers deserve a raise 👏
ReplyIt’s definitely because Godzilla vs. Kong is Superior to any of the BS woke films that have come out in the past year
ReplyI think the difference between Bill Maher and the other daily comedians is that there is a decent amount of poesy in his cynicism. And I really love that (and the fact that he dates the hottest chicks).
Replylol he shows Shindler’s List and 12 Years a Slave as movies that aren’t depressing??
ReplyOnly error in this is that virtue signaling has ruined every University “where football isn’t a priority”. My wife works for a Big Ten University, and it’s ruined them too…
ReplyLikes and retweets don’t pay the bills, and when the world is open for business again, will be interesting to see how many woke companies fail.
Bill Maher was trending on twitter the other day for this monologue and people were attacking him for saying he’s a “privileged white male”. WHAT?! Pretty sure that after the shit storm that was 2020, none of us want to watch one depressing movie after the other!
ReplyWell, there is always that movie with the giant lizard vs the giant ape lol Chicago 7and Mank are the only ones on my watch list, but most of the general public have no clue or interest in America’s history nor a time when it actually had “culture”
ReplyEscapist entertainment huh Bill……anyone else see the classic “D.C.Cab”??
ReplyIs Schindler’s list supposed to be a film that makes u feel good ? ok….
ReplyI actually liked Minari and Promising Young Woman. The latter wasn’t too woke. I was hoping Bill would take aim at how inclusion rules and cancel culture are ruining the industry. But I guess even he has to walk a fine line.
Reply“Joining the Black Panthers” is the new “just two weeks before retirement”.
ReplyIt is precisely because the movie is so woke that you are falling asleep. Enough is enough. Time to turn the tide of all this SJW bullshit.
ReplyHe doesn’t do it often but I enjoy when this show gets into some gallows humor.
ReplyGreat video. While the value of one’s home typically accounts for most of the networth of the average individual, most of the affluent and very rich generally have the majority of their wealth invested
ReplyDoes anybody else watch Real Time and go “What Happened to Bill?” And not in a good way.
ReplyWatching Bill finally eat his own, over the last month, has been so satisfying!!
ReplyYes Bill….LIBERALS SUCK!
We need a Lake Okeechobee version of Titanic (Florida Man: Damn, that manatee must be a thousand feet long!)
ReplyIt’s pretty sad when Bill Maher starts sounding like a Conservative.
ReplyI feel like this should have been called the Spoilies lol
ReplyFUCK THE OSCARS AND WHATEVER AGENDA THEY ARE PUSHING THIS YEAR
ReplyHow do they still have an audience ?
ReplySo sad to see someone I used to think of as a sharp political commentator when I was younger devolve into someone who complains about movies on their television show…. like how out of touch can you be?
Reply…”if there were an active shooter in the theater!”

ReplyNPR said the hunter Biden laptop is fake.

ReplyThis why I watch anime. I rather get depressed over a sad anime than a WOKE story starring Karen and her dying cat. No offense to female actors cause you guys are not at fault your just playing a role you are being paid for. Let’s get straight to the point. WOKE shit is shit and you should watch some good old angel beats
ReplyTo be fair, a decent amount of the escapist type movies that 2020 was supposed to have got pushed back to 2021. Dune, No Time to Die, A Quiet Place Part 2 are a few examples.
ReplyHow about just plain movies. SciFi, romance, adventure, whatever. Give us a story with a beginning, a middle and a good ending. That’s all. Just a plain good old movie. I do not watch a movie to learn a lesson or see how bad off my fellow Americans are. I can visit or talk to my family for that. I watch a movie so that I can escape all that … you DIMWITTED ASSHOLES!
ReplyBest documentary 🤣🤣
ReplyI dunno, Bill, I kinda wanted to see Godzilla vs Kong. I’ve been a Big G fan for decades and knew they were corny with some rare gems here and there. I got exactly what I expected and had fun with it.
ReplyBill hitting his stride
Replytry WOKE DISNEY
ReplyGodzilla vs. Kong. Fucking awesome movie!! Seen it 3 times lol.
ReplyI love Bill Maher but I disagree with his implication here that single family zoning needs to be eliminated. Overpopulation in California is why there is a “lack of housing.” Would Mr. Maher really like an apartment building erected next to his home?
ReplyYup. Just over a decade ago, Hollywood was nominating positive uplifting movies like _Atonement_ and _No Country for Old Men_ and _There Will Be Blood_
Replyhollywood is in the dirt : ))))
ReplyIf it’s so bad that even Bill Maher nails it, then it’s REALLY damn bad. Odd thing, though: I once heard someone criticize late-night hosts for writing “jokes” that weren’t so much funny as they were designed to generate applause and approbation. This was a legit funny monologue, but I was hearing A LOT of audience applause while I was laughing. Very strange.
Reply“If your movie is so woke, how come I’m falling asleep?” Nailed it!
The thing I’m waiting for is that sooner or later, Hollywood is going to HAVE to make entertaining movies again… otherwise, they’ll watch as the entire movie industry collapses upon itself.
ReplyEpics need to come back.
ReplyTOO LATE BILLY!!!You helped create this woke 💩 Now reap the benefits 😂😂😂
ReplyI get this, but Bill bitches about MCU films which are very entertaining and a way to escape.
ReplyRemember when movies used to be happy and good? Then he shoes Schindler’s list, milk, and 12 years a slave as an example…. this guy is a fucking joke. I liked bill Maher. Like what he stands for most of the time but this entire thing was absolutely wrong. If Schindler’s list came out today he would bash that as well. He clearly had seen none of these movies. None of these movies ask you to be sad. Nowhere in nomadland is it saying oh poor us. Its disrespectful to the entire movie making process as if Hollywood is just some guy in an office deciding what liberals should cry at next. This entire video was pathetic
ReplyWhat happened to Bill Maher? Couple of weeks ago he made the ridiculous argument that Grammys are the ultimate benchmark for musical excellence, when anyone with actual ears knows they’ve routinely honored commercial record company dreck over more interesting music. He basically claimed that record industry commercial pressure results in the cream rising to the top. Now he complains that the Oscars are too serious. Sure, that’s the problem – Hollywood doesn’t mass produce enough fantasy and infantilizing anesthetics. The nominees include some great, and highly entertaining movies. Bill is apparently disappointed that the Oscars aren’t closer to the Grammys, where record company execs maximizing profits off their biggest investments very often trumps musical excellence. The movie studios’ mindless, redundant, predictable big money flicks don’t merit Oscars. And they don’t need it. They’ve already made their producers fortunes.
ReplyHow about not caring about these people getting awards anyway. I don’t think any of these actors care that you got the engineer of the year award. Yes, you can appreciate the feelings their films and performances stir up in you, but stop idolizing these people already. They didn’t cure cancer, they played pretend in front of a camera.
ReplyThanks for giving the ending of Promising Young Woman away Bill! Damn!
ReplyThis is so on target… I love these “New Rule” shorts!
ReplyIsn’t that what Marvel movies are for. Ohhhh, thats right you find them childish. Well enjoy your depressing adult movies.
ReplyLook no further than Arizona. You can’t buy a house here because the California liberals moving here don’t want to pay taxes, support illegals, get the homeless off the freeways in their own state…but they definitely want to tell their friends they voted for Biden. It’s just rich people pretending to be woke. Once the poor people, 90% of America, realize that color isn’t what divides us, all the soccer moms are going to have to think twice about waiting in that long drive thru line at Starbucks when a string of c class Mercedes are getting held up at gun point.
ReplyMaher’s been critical of suphero comics and movies for being superficial and lowbrow, which is fair, but here he’s asking for less thought-provoking media. Personally, I love the catharsis a good tragedy can provide.
ReplyMaher really letting out that cultural conservative grift since Trump lost.
Reply“The Immigrant Who Sh*t in a Coffee Can” 😂 😂 😂
ReplyRight on the point
ReplySound of Metal was actually really good
ReplyBill has turned into Blue MAGA. Movies are about everyday struggles, and he wants Transformers or Godzilla vs Kong to be in the Oscars. He’s just butthurt that his neoLib is being called out for what they are – blue MAGA.
ReplyOld Hollywood was very racist, omophobic and mysoginistic (I know new Hollywood it’s not perfect either).
I don’t understand people who want to go back to the old times.
Well maybe he wants to go back because in the old times movie were produced, wrote and directed by all white rich privileged men.
ReplyWell at least we got Godzilla Versus Kong to satisfy our need for escapism…
ReplyIn Memorial is Only Part of the Oscars I Want to See in These Last Few Years.
ReplyBrilliant. Good for bill on this one. Wow, I didn’t know they made any movies in 2020, and now I know why I didn’t hear about them. LOL Yikes what a dreary bunch of PC humorless garbage. Hollywood is so irrelevant.
ReplyPreach
Reply🤔 Gee whiz Bill.. you’re darker than usual.. 😂 😘
ReplyI’m no fan of Maher but this was a good one
Replyoutstanding, even by maher’s already high standards
ReplySo damn true. Hollywood is drowning in Wokeness, it’s insufferable.
ReplyHis “good examples” included REDS and Schindler’s List, Harvey Milk. Literally some of the most absolutely depressing long movies ever made…
ReplyThe Oscars movies this year. They are the worst nominations ever. The Academy just does wanna give a Pop Culture movie any credit. For the 1st ever. FUCK THE OSCARS!!!
ReplyJust make them get ricky gervais to host and they will strighten up real quick xd
ReplyBill does have his moments of clarity.
Reply“If your movie is so woke how come I’m falling asleep”
Lmao
ReplyWait, this is the same Bill Maher talking shit on “stupid” blockbuster movies and how Hollywood should make something meaningful? Telling us in the same breath to grow up. Hey Bill, hows about it wasn’t exactly a banner year for movies in general FOR SOME REASON and we were lucky to get these. A lot of us are really struggling and maybe indentify with some of the things these movies are saying.
ReplyBetter watch out for those ” active shooter ” jokes .
ReplyThe last time I watched a movie was in 1992. I have zero use for movies of all genres.
ReplyIf hollywood/netflix etc all disappeared off the face of the earth i wouldn’t care one bit.
yeah schindler’s list was real entertaining bill. jesus christ has he actually watched any of these?
ReplyIts the roaring 20’s!
ReplyHave fun!!!!!!!!!
Got a real annoying audience?
ReplyCrazy to hear Bill quote Rush Limbaugh. Never thought that would happen.
ReplyBill you always say it like it is the thoughts that are in other people’s mind transferred to yours I think it’s called ESP
ReplyHollywood also accomodates the CCP too much.
ReplyNever heard of any of these……
ReplyHollywood, it’s okay if white people are good at something. Let them make movies, I use to like them.
ReplyAMEN!!!!! People are getting “Woked” to death
ReplyBill just keeps nailing it.
ReplyIt’s almost like leftists are anger and depression addicts
ReplyDouble Indemnity. Best movie ever.
ReplyHollywood just wants to tell us what’s wrong with us now! We pay them to tell us how shitty we are. Screw them and their twisted fucking moral set.
ReplyBeing sad makes them feel like they aren’t part of the problem. It’s the old bait and switch. Look how bad you are, while we live like drunk sailors and rape and pillage the richest country’s money and live the dream life you dream of.
ReplyMan, he should consider actually seeing these great movies, and not knee-jerking with the conservative whine machine. How is this commentary not a virtue signal, itself?
ReplyThis is why Godzilla vs Kong is cleaning up. EDIT: Lol he said it!
ReplyAnd martin scorsese wonders why marvel movies do so well lol
ReplySo true about movies. I just watch the old movies over and over
ReplyPeople still watch the Oscars?
ReplyBill’s gotta lay off the woke mob sometimes. I agree with everything he says in these monologues, but they don’t resonate if he beats the same drum every single week. It feels like he’s finally becoming an out-of-touch, cranky old man this season. First time the show doesn’t feel like essential viewing in forever to me.
ReplyBill Maher and his elitist buddies inject the blood of young african children to fight aging.
Replyi liked you better with no idiotic audience that claps and yells every time you open your mouth or make an eye roll…
ReplyLast good movie was Jaws
Replyhttps://youtu.be/pmR2vQNGGxQ
ReplyI’m beginning to question survival. Must be time for another drink.
ReplyPerhaps one of the most ignorant and comically illogical segments/rants Bill Maher has ever made. He said this year’s line-up of Oscar nominated films are “downers”, while images of great movies of the past played on the screen “12 Years a Slave” and “Schindler’s List”. Those films didn’t fit his criteria of sad or depressing? Yet, “Minari”, “Sound of Metal”, and “Nomadland” are labelled downers? Clearly someone didn’t watch the films this year.
ReplyI like this one.
ReplyI wonder how much affordable housing there is around Bill’s neck of the woods…
ReplyWe are being socially engineered.
Replyjudging by audience reaction bill is getting pretty close to the line of being unpersoned
ReplyYou’re late to the discussion, Bill. The internet has taken the talk regarding topics of entertainment & pop culture and wokeness when you were busy saying left-wing good, right-wing bad.
ReplyLong time bill lover but man, never disagreed with him more, really having trouble picturing what movies bill likes to watch…and a big huge spoiler alert would’ve been nice.
Reply5:30 – Thank you, again and again
ReplyI HATE YOUR EMPLOYEES OVER CHEERING OR THEYLL GET A DIRTY LOOK…IT WAS PERFECT WHEN YOU HAD THOSE OLD CLIPS…
Reply👍🏻
ReplyI usually go looking for 90s and 80s removies and TV shows I can watch/re-watch.
ReplyMovies and TV shows are super dark, political and mostly lack creativity. If it got an ounch of humour it’s watered down to the point I can’t laugh at it..
This isn’t just woke happenstance, this is social manipulation and I am tired of walking out to confront them in person alone. Do if yourself sissies, im moving to Mexico where men STRONG AND PROUD and women are STRONG AND BEAUTIFUL.
Replybest keep your weak BS up there now… its not welcome down south.
Don’t worry, Mank, the one nominee not mentioned by Maher, will win. Don’t take the razor blades out of the medicine cabinet just yet.
ReplyThis happened before during the 70’s when everything seemed gloomy and decrepit that most of the movies that came out during that time like “The Godfather”, “Taxi Driver”, “Death Wish”, “Serpico”, and “The French Connection” where you almost couldn’t tell the good guys from the bad were just as dark. It took a film like “Star Wars” to bring us back from the gloom.
ReplyWait are there options or not Bill? What a cry baby
ReplyNetflix had a movie recently called White Tiger. It had meaning AND it was funny and exciting. We need more movies like that.
ReplyBill Maher, the man who’s finally realising his side are the problem in America
ReplyHe’s not wrong
ReplyThis is one reason Marvel has had such a great run. Not because they’re thought provoking cinematic masterpieces, but because they’re actually entertaining and fun to watch. This was also true about Star Wars up to The Last Jedi. There’s a reason dramas like A River Runs Through It were always well made and rare. We enjoy movies like that occasionally, but more often we’d like to watch action, comedy, etc… that makes you smile and laugh. Hollywood was better when it took itself less seriously.
ReplyBill, are you suggesting, affordable housing is finally within my grasp? $300/month rent including utilities. I did, set that mark. I did say, if 300 is not doable, all hell gonna break loose. And I was not lowballing. Saying, if 300 is not doable, war is a coming. But nobody takes me seriously. 300/month including utilities? PFFF Impossible. Outrageous. Fine. Don’t take my word when I say, if rent don’t drop to 300… WAR is on the horizon. Now you can raise minimum wage to 15. But when you do, the rent gonna jump accordingly. see how that works? Capitalism fails when it comes to sheltering the poor. Question is. Can a country, survive, without poor people? That is, what we’re seeing happen right here right now in USA. Can a country survive, without poor people. Can a country survive with poor people, living on the streets? Not for long. No prosperity. Stagnancy. Zero prosperity. What is the solution? Government housing? That’s communism. Socialism.
Replypopcorn
ReplyBill you lil cherry picker… go watch Emily in Paris! .. and suicide squad two to watch Pete Davidson’s arms fall off!
ReplyNever even heard of any of those nominees
This was bound to happen when they put literal affirmative action requirements into whether you can even be nominated while ignoring anything about how good or popular it is
ReplyRight on!
ReplyThe Oscars used to be biased towards dramas. Then they narrowed it down to dramas depicting mental/physical illness or biopics. Now it’s about social injustice. They just get more depressing as the years go by.
Replybill maher is hit or miss for me but this is excellent and truth
ReplyI’d sure love to see that heidi heitkamp interview again….. I like to despise her
ReplyA re-make of Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death more your thing, Bill??
ReplyNomad’s land is not particularly sad, more the pity. It doesn’t make you sentimental wishing for affordable housing while doing nothing to make it happen. It tells you not to worry: the homeless are happier that way.
Replybut this human garbage is exactly like those people that he is calling out in this video. there is not a single difference.
ReplySeem like interesting movies to me.
ReplyFinally——————Maher gets it right !
ReplyThe Debbie’s better talking about a major world war that may breakout in the Ukraine, or with China, the bar is stacked high and the shit is about to fly into the fan.
Replythx WOKE u destroy Liberal
ReplyNah change the name to the Karens.
ReplyThey all get up and lecture us all like a bunch of 40+ year old Karens.
Amen reverend
Replythats the old bill i used to love
ReplyYou reap what you sow Mr Maher – so why complain?
ReplyEven though Godzilla vs Kong wasn’t exactly a terrific movie, it was good enough where not only it got people back in theaters and now people are actually wanting a Monsterverse!
ReplyOk bill you nailed this one, now fuk off
ReplyTHANK YOU FOR THIS BILL MAHER!
ReplyWow, good man!!!
ReplyGood to know a classic liberal still exists. Well said Bill.
ReplyDear Bill Maher, I hope you’d find this…if you do, you are helping us heal by segments like this. We all can be happy, and you are right enough despair.
ReplyToo funny, but also true. I prefer watching older movies now days.
ReplyOh, good… now I don’t have to actually watch these movies he summed then up.
ReplyGod bills “comedy” is worse than Brenden schaub
ReplyStarting to smell the roses eh?… bout time…
ReplyRare W
ReplyThis was the worst New Rules segment I’ve ever seen! This year’s Oscar contenders are actually very good movies. Great character studies. Great acting. Some are really important stories told from new and unique perspectives.
ReplyGodzilla vs. Kong was terrible too. It Was Michael Bay Transformers level stupid.
ReplyWell I’m watching Godzilla vs. Kong ,because I have cried enough this year and so have the rest of us!
ReplyBrought to you by a millionaire who has never experienced anything untoward.
ReplyI’m not a leftist but I love Bill
ReplyThe best part about his monologue is how sad and shocked his liberal audience is that they aren’t sure whether to laugh or gasp at his blasphemy.
ReplyGeT wOkE gO bRoKe
ReplyMay I add my vote to this from overseas? I do not believe our filmmakers can get better that fast, so please, Hollywood! Hold on for another 5-7 years, at least!
ReplyBill still doesn’t understand that homelessness it’s not a problem of not having a home. It’s interesting, he’s almost there, he almost sees it, but he can’t get past his authoritarian tendencies.
ReplyModern liberals aren’t liberals anymore. They’re white shaming regressives..
ReplyHell must have frozen over because I find myself agreeing with Bill Maher.
ReplyMaher is funnier then last year!
Replydamn this is accurate af.
ReplyYeah ok Bill act like the normal guy after 4 years of orange man bad tinfoil hats and he will never leave office bullshit, ok.
ReplyThis is concrete proof that our culture has never been worse! Certainly not in my lifetime. Everything SUCKS!
ReplyIt’s the same with Disney/Marvel and DC with characters that’s partially aimed at children. “Are you a boy? Say sorry to all the women and girls, because you’re inherently a sexist! Are you white child? Well you’re a bad person, because you and every white person you know are a racist. Are you a black child? All white people hate you and everybody and everything is holding you down …so don’t bother.”
ReplyIt’s a SJW problem
ReplyI wish the audience wouldn’t clap so much, it’s annoying!
ReplyHollywood: Look at us. We’re So woke now.
ReplyAlso Hollywood: Why is Anime is popular all of a sudden? 😂
We need a separate award ceremony so Boss Level and Frank Grillo can get the credit they deserve.
ReplyI stopped watching the Oscars back in 2000. They skipped over DUDE, WHERE’S MY CAR. Entertainment counts for something.
ReplyHollywood directors and producers making products to virtue signal, not realizing common people have shitty enough lives already and they go to movies to escape their lives.
ReplyWhite fragility = modern day Mein Kampf
Hollywood can tell you all about it
ReplySo what are Bill’s favourite bits in the fun movies that he had scrolling? Ralph Fiennes shooting the girl in Schinldler’s list, the whipping of Lepita Nyongo in 12 years a slave, the hilarious genocide in Apocalypse Now, the heart warming racism of 12 Angry Men? Was Citizen Kane fun?, Casablanca? To Kill a Mockingbird? Sorry Bill, but you are just whining.
ReplyBill is right but his politics go hand in hand with the culture that bred this woke shit. Hes either too blind or too arrogant to admit it.
ReplyTruuuuuuuuuue
ReplyI know monster flicks aren’t really Bill’s kind of movie, but Godzilla vs Kong rocked in my opinion. It gave you a gigantic bout to remember.
ReplyIam 38 yrs old i have never once been “excited about seeing the oscars
ReplyKyle Dunnigan “okay”.
ReplyFeel bad movies have their place, but that place isn’t _everywhere._
ReplyIs bill leaving the PC bullshit he used to always hate and is coming back to us, that care about personal lives and freedoms? You quitting your virtual signalling Bill? Are you still bought and paid for?
ReplyNo worried, we got Thunder Force for you…
ReplyHonda’s ghost won’t stop screaming at me when to see GvK-Martin Scorsese
ReplyLiberals need to feel sad because it makes what is coming next easier to swallow. We are now on your shores America and we coming to clean you out.
ReplyHollywood’s no longer liberal, “liberal i.e. liberating, liberty” should bring joy and a smile. Not authoritarianism, quotas, and depression. It’ sad when some of the best least propaganda filled movies I have seen this year were were made by a communist regime.
ReplyI agree with you Bill. I guess once a year i agree with you, lol
ReplyWoke liberals are angry all the time that’s why Hollywood doesn’t make a good movie anymore : b They can’t !!
I disagree with Bill Maher here. Movies are not necessarily made for escape. If only light-hearted movies were nominated, Bill would complain that Hollywood only cares for unrealistic films and doesn’t even want to face the real issues going on in the world. It’s a lose-lose either way.
ReplyI worked at a film festival for many years and every singe year over 95% of all the movies selected were about suicide, depression, rape, domestic violence, yada, yada, yada, it’s absolute nonsense. Any time some one attending asked me what I’ve seen so far I always respond with “nothing”.
ReplyGood point, Bill. But just to add one more layer to it. The people making these movies don’t need escapism, so they don’t want to produce any. Their lives are perfect. Yes, COVID was terribly rough on them. I mean being cooped up in their 10,000 sq ft mansion, with all the latest technologies and pools and tennis courts was hard. But, joking aside, they make these movies because they have no real problems and they feel guilty. As if somehow we, the common people, have to be reminded of the hardships of the world. They are so myopic, lost in their own worlds. They think that we all need a lesson in reality, while they are nowhere near it.
The irony of Nomandland is, in the year that it came out, more people became homeless than in recent memory. What did Francis and Chloe do about that? They made a movie. So brave. It will sweep. If the buzz is to be believed. They will all give a speech about what “I” need to do about homelessness. Then they will all go back to their mansions. Fuck off.
ReplyI found plenty of ways to “escape” from reality during the past year… I just didn’t depend on the Oscars to show me how to do it. 🤷♂️
ReplyIt’s scary that I find myself agreeing with this man more and more. I’m on the far right we used to be hated enemies but now the things he says make sense. The world has been turned upside down.
Reply5:18 this
Reply5:18
ReplyIt is quite ironic that you are now complaining about the very same people you helped to stabilish in politics, hollywood and music.
You are one of them, Bill. You are another waste of sperm.
Celebrate the result: it is on you and your folks.
ReplyThis is why I went to watch “Nobody” & “Godzilla v Kong”
ReplyGod it’s so cringey how he keeps pausing for applause
ReplyBill Maher has never gone woke and been consistent even if there’s a little TDS every now and then much respect
ReplyWay to go Bill who hit the nail on the head.
ReplyI’m not a democrat and still agree with a lot bill says these days
Reply“We we’re gonna have an In Mamoriam segment, but it wasn’t diverse enough.”
Reply-Ricky Gervais
Imagine Bill Maher hosting the Oscars: “welcome to the Debbie’s…I mean the Oscars…”
ReplyDoes it seem like less people are clapping?
ReplyYou’re exactly right on this,I mean damn what happened???!
ReplyJesus Christ, even double minded genuine Christians with a sense of humor are laughing out loud at the blunt truth. It’s hard to not like you bill except when you talk shit about Jesus, you faithless bastard lol
ReplyAbsolutely spot on. Brilliant take down of Streep, Clooney and Co and what their virtue signalling and empty political gestures has done to movies. Boring movies nobody has ever heard of or will want to see.
ReplyYou are absolutely 💯 right
ReplyI wouldnt feel honored being nominated because I am black! Tokenism nonsense!
ReplyDamn Bill you spoiled a few of those movies for me. Still funny tho lol
ReplyBill Maher is one of those rare, old-school liberals with balls, and they unfortunately represent a dying breed because spineless, politically correct leftists are taking over…
ReplyBill keeps reeling me back with segments like this.
ReplyBill once again shows off how he is like Trump mistaking television/movies for reality and Hollywood for reality. The oscars, the emmies, all of those Hollywood awards are setup to basically promote movies, they are NOT indicators of the quality of that movie. This is well established and is an open-secret, meaning that it is not widely advertised but is admitted. But that failure to understand how audiences don’t want to be spoon fed happy-talk anymore when they have come to realize that happy-talk is why the world is on fire, racism is still unresolved, and the world is in a deep recession due to an ongoing world pandemic.
Its like maybe audiences realize that maybe part of the problem was we kept being okay with mind-numbing, the thing that literally made the inventor of television to hate television, and maybe audiences have caught up with why he hated it.
But Bill Maher doesn’t get it. He wants light, color, and movement to make him feel good. He want his brain to go numb. He wants not to think about suffering or how it is apart of the human experience, very especially in lately in America and the world, and how all indicators are is that there is going to be a lot more suffering in the future… that maybe the world doesn’t revolve around Bill Maher, doesn’t revolve around his mistaking Hollywood for reality, doesn’t revolve around his need for brain-numbing, doesn’t revolve around his need for Hollywood to make him happy, and doesn’t exist in a bubble where he doesn’t have to suffer like the rest of the world does.
So this whole segment could of been compressed into a small joke about how the oscars are a bit negative for his taste, he turned it into a preachy tone-deaf anti-liberal and anti-compassion segment. Maybe Bill doesn’t see movies about suffering and experience compassion or solidarity. Maybe Bill isn’t capable of experiencing or understanding solidarity and compassion for his fellow man… he thinks his fellow man is there to make him happy. If giving them something to make him happy then hes all for it, if its them doing something that makes him sad thats bad. There is a term for that, its a sociopath.
Replyfor real!🤣🤣🤣 Said he had to work so I went to the show alone…sad movies always makes me cry.🤣🤣🤣
ReplyThat’s why Animes are better than Hollywood movies
ReplyI love the parts when even Bill gets annoyed with his overly excited audience.
ReplyThese passed 3 or 4, 5 generations do not have an imagination!
ReplyAll they know is to make SEQUELS!!
If THAT’S all you can give,
to YOUR PUBLIC,
YOUR in the wrong BUSINESS!!!!
Absolutely no one cares about Oscars! Perhaps we can expect another cathartic “I take responsibility “ montage staring Julianne Moore on how awful the awards show is.
Replyhe sounds like the typical ornery grandpa
ReplySo depressing… How Russian of them…
ReplyIn other words I’m a whiny white male and only my grievances matter, if you tell a story I don’t approve of then I’ll complain about it.
Its getting kinda old Bill whining and complaining about the so called “whiners and complainers”, talk about irony/hypocrisy
ReplyGee, thanks for the spoilers!
ReplyThis guy has the worst audience! Laughing at the dumbest things and clapping every two seconds! Damn it’s annoying!
ReplyOr is it because they started having more diverse judges who related to movies that represented their families even in just appearances? 🤔
ReplySomeone introduce bill to Bollywood. Escapism at its finest
ReplySolution: Indian movies!!!
Also that desi guy looks like joe Pesci from jfk!!!
ReplySpeaking of movies:
that guy looks like joe Pesci from jfk!!!! It’s a must watch! Love Kevin Costner
ReplyI may not agree with him most of the time but Props to Bill for being bold. Some of those jokes made me cringe but they were funny. We need more of this. I think Bill may have found a niche. I can almost forgive him for the wreck the economy comment several years ago
ReplyPlease leave us the movies, AND SPORTS.
ReplyNo matter how more and more conservative I become, I’ll always be a fan of Bill. He’s a classic liberal who is always a comedian first.
ReplyWow Bill! When you are right, you are really right. Great stuff. Thanks.
ReplySpot on
ReplyOne of the biggest mystery in life is the question “How can Bill Maher be a Democrat, and not a Republican.” He says all the right things, and then goes and votes for Dems.
Reply*Well, These are the times we are living*
People little realise how much American Culture has changed in Last 20 years since Sopranos
ReplyIs this the same guy that complains about superhero movies and that people should be watching deeply philosophical movies?
ReplyHis guests are the target audience for the crappy new Oscar movie storylines in the last decade, yet they are laughing like they hate the movies. Then stop complaining on social media……
ReplyThe yuppies loving this segment are the same people Maher says he hates. You don’t even realize when you’re being made fun of….
ReplyI typically am on the fence with some of his view poinents but he’s spot on with his view about movies that are being put out lately. I’ve been watching to many movies lately that by the end leave me sad, mildly depressed or with heightened anxiety. Too much gloom and doom dressed as realism. -A Moderate Democrat
ReplyBill Maher for President
ReplyI rather watch Chinese fantasy series than watch any Hollywood movie is becoming weird. Very weird
ReplyHollywood reminds me movie industry in Soviet Union before collapse (~1980-1990). Uplifting movies were slowly replaced with dark, depressing shows about immoral trash. Self-flagellating people, without vision, on how to improve the future, took over. In a lot of modern movies you can clearly see that writers are selfish and lack honesty, but not aware about this, therefore their “heroes” frequently act more like psychopaths on power trips and without consideration about others.
ReplySo, where’s YOUR comedy, Mr. Bill? You have none? No, but … wait for it! … the inevitable liberal-bashing! When did YOU turn to the “Dark Side”, Mr. Maher?
ReplyWhy isn’t our country doesn’t report this news to All Americans at all ?
ReplyAnd it’s on international news that every other country is complaining, protesting and against Japan for doing such selfish thing that is jeopardizing all our health in the world by dumping their nuclear waste in the ocean !!
If we United state is protecting Japan why isn’t there is no news is talking about this most dangerous matter most and most horrible thing that Japanese government is doing to all of us ? People don’t know what’s going to happen to them
They are dumping Nuclear waste that will cause cancer to all Americans. We no longer can eat any seafood any fishes and how can we go to Japanese restaurants in the future? We can die from cancer .
Many countries like China Korea , Taiwan , Singapore , Philippine, China , are all against Japanese government for doing such horrible thing Nuclear waste is going to be dumped in Pacific Ocean by Japan . And the nuclear waste will come to near the ocean to California and it will be dangerous to all of us here in United state 6 months from now . We United state , our government says nothing at all !! Why ? What’s wrong with our news ? Not reporting this news to warn all Americans people that our lives and health in danger ? This is more dangerous for al Americans people that we will eat all seafood & fish . Salmon & tuna contains nuclear waste and we will get cancer from fish & canned food we eat .
Our government is not only protecting Japanese government doing such a selfish thing to harm our health they are thinking about not to influence the business here . That’s why we have zero news here . They are blocking this news for us to know . It will be in our body . What about women who are pregnant ? How about our kids ? No one cares . This is certainly no less dangerous then Covid . I don’t know how you can use this news to make a comedy story so people can try to ignore and keep eating fish ? Maybe ?
This is ridiculous, not only did you speak of spoilers about movies, its clear speaking about how ” depressing” and “woke” you think these movies are that you did not see them at all. You should never speak about something you have no clue about. This segment is total BS. This years slate of movies shed more light on independent movies that got a lot of people through a difficult year, with uplifting stories, not depressing ones.
ReplyWhen I pull up RT to see what movies are coming it almost makes me sad.
ReplyI used to love movies now its lots of horror and serious preachy movies in droves
Somewhere along the way Hollywood lost their way and are no longer entertaining.
Maher makes it so easy to be semi-woke.
ReplyEverything’s over politicized. You asked for a left version of tea party you got it
ReplyLove it: If your movie is so woke, why am I falling asleep? 🤣!!!
ReplyI gave up watching murders and torture for entertainment when Game of Thrones came out. We are a screwed up society when we watch extreme violence for escapism and call showing a female nipple on broadcast TV immoral.
Reply“Yeah!” “Wooh!” “Alright!”
These audience members will clap at anything.
Replyliberals are ruining america
ReplyEveryone must be gay now, to be politically correct. You’ve noticed too. Interracial sex, and homosexuality are a Hollywood obsession. And must be injected into every script. Fempowerment, also super popular in Hollywood, as is, white guilt, white male shaming.
ReplyThe week on ‘Old man shouts at cloud’.
ReplyI’ve occasionally wondered (during bouts of severe boredom) when the participation category for an oscar will occur.
ReplyThe best show on TV
Replythe oscars have cancelled themselves.
ReplyAntidepressants should be included with every Oscar.
ReplyWhy spoil the ending of two of the movies without spoiler warning? Take my first dislike.
ReplyBig thumbs down for spoilers
ReplyBullshit, biased opinion. As if anyone would fall asleep during Promising young woman…
ReplyYou are the Man Bill! I wish there were more smart and analytic people like you.
Replyhaha this was truely amazing, bill is a savage!
ReplyBest Picture use to include: Gladiator, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Gangs of New York, Casablanca, The Godfather, Forest Gump, Chinatown, and Pulp Fiction,. Now? Now?! It’s, MARVEL cartoon characters and, “Let us(the film industry), flounder and wallow in human misery, inequality(real or not) and things not being fair, as well as displaying some pseudo moral superiority..” the film Industry died a few years ago. Thanks god for NETFLIX and Youtube.
ReplyDamn, I really wanted to watch promising young woman.
ReplyHollywood sucks
ReplyHollywood sucks balls
ReplyI’m with Bill, would it have killed them to come out with upbeat, hopeful, positive movies? The best thing that’s happened in two years is my adopted kitty had 5 kittens today! HURRAH, Celebrate LIFE. Ms Molliy, Queen of al Beggars, is fine, thank you. And the babies are PERFECT. Je suis content.
ReplyWow, I look at that “Best picture” list, and I have not even heard of ANY of them.
ReplyI’m still waiting for “I am Sam II; Still ‘Tarded!”.
I just saw “Promising Young Woman”; boy, did he nail it…
ReplyI Love this human ♥
ReplyPlease stop assocoating my name with negativity. Not fair. People R suggestible. You will lose a loyal fan, indeed, BILL.
ReplyYou have great writers, love your show.
ReplyCareful, Mr. Maher.
They’ll cancel you next.
ReplyWell, that is what we get when the Radical woke Leftists are in charge. 2021, the year of a President that is cognitively challenged. BLM and ANTIFA being allowed to riot, while the police are being defunded. Blue states are still being vaccinated and 3 masks are encouraged, schools are not open and a Governor whose decisions killed 15,000 seniors, whose behavior has been accused by 9 women, who wrote a book by employees AND still sitting in office. Forgot, he is planning to give $15,000 to illegals in New York. (Probably from a Liberal Bill that my taxes will be paying for) Other Blue States have problems with BLM members taking over parts of cities, or crime statistics going up. Schools and businesses still closed. Through a President’s bad judgement (or someone’s)
Replyour border has been opened, allowing children without families with them to flood our country. Along with sex traffickers, dope dealers, and God only knows who else. Of course this administration has a plan, benefits, no background or health checks and of course amnesty (the most important).
The hope of course is Democratic votes. Cheap labor for donors. This is the plan and it helps, no one whether born here or legally immigrated, and took the citizenship class will be able to vote Democratic. Oh yes lest l forget on the first day of Presidency over 42,000 Americans have lost their jobs.
Which is probably why they are allowing the borders to be flooded and all illegals to have their citizenship. The way this administration is going, don’t think things are going to go their way come 2022. Yet, there is still hope, bias main stream news still lies to Americans.
I could go on and on how they want the government to be in control of elections, no ID’s and no checks and balances- wow that sounds legal. Pack the Supreme Court, teach children about transgender and how to be less white and that all whites are racist (except Liberals), to hate America, Constitution and the Bill of rights. I call that Marxism and l don’t call that America.
Every country sees us as week, so we need to learn to speak Mandarin, throw in Spanish and of course Russian for good measure. I don’t think most Democrats understood what was going to happen when they voted for Biden. I would say impeach him, but l am more afraid of Harris (she is an idiot) or Pelosi because she is just hateful and with her millions she doesn’t give a sh*t about Americans.
Virtue signaling and identity politics.
ReplyPromising Young Woman is a very entertaining movie though. I highly recommend it.
ReplyBiill Maher… The only guy who doesn’t realize art imitates life.
ReplyLiberal Minds finding Their new church 😉
ReplyI am sorry, is he the same guy who complained about how stupid Superhero movies are or am I having a stroke right now?
ReplyWoke is a secular religion but without the forgiveness or compassion. And I say that as a liberal and an atheist. Right now I feel more kinship with my conservative, and moderately Christian, friends than anyone on the so called progressive left. They’re fecking lunatics frankly.
ReplyNope, I like tragic and bittersweet movies.
ReplyHell yes Bill!
ReplyWhich brings back the old question: why don’t they nominate comedies? They have to stop thinking about comedy as an inferior genre.
ReplyBINGO on all points! Bill is worth saving!
ReplyI’m here for the spoilers.
ReplyActors in _A Fish Called Wanda_ and _My Cousin Vinnie_ (both comedies) were awarded Oscars.
ReplyThose days are long gone.
Only Dramas and horrific shit gets recognized nowadays, and everyone knows it’s way harder to make someone laugh than to depress them.
It’s almost as if the pharmaceutical companies are the only ones winning anymore with vaccines and anti- depressant meds..hmmmm?
ReplyThanks for actually making us laugh Bill!
ReplyI’ve always said the right has the “I’ll pray for you” peeps and the left has the “self hatred and guilt and lecturing”- both make themselves feel like they are doing something without ACTUALLY helping!
ReplyFantastic show.
Reply“We all had a bad year, but a little escapism would have been…”
ReplyWelcome.
In Dec 1941, “Sullivan’s Travels”,
a satire on the film industry, was previewed.
It’s about a famous comedy director who wants to make a socially relevant drama.
He becomes a vagrant drifter to gain life experience for his film.
After many trials & tribulations, including getting jailed and working on a Chain Gang, he ends up going to a movie comedy and discovers that laughter is the best medicine in times of trouble. As a result, he goes back to Hollywood to make another comedy. 80 years later and film makers need to relearn that lesson.
Bill, you hit that nail on the head, again.
Bill “Outwoking” the “Woke” without actually doing something about it.
ReplyPretty darn “Woke”.🤔
You could learn something though by watching the Oscar nominees if you’re open minded enough to consider other perspectives, which Bill Maher isn’t. If it ain’t sports spending that lines his pockets, he ain’t interested.
ReplyBill Maher has become Mr. POS. I used to enjoy his “work”.
ReplyVirtue signaling:
Reply“Could it be that being sad allows you to feel like you’re doing something about a problem without actually having to do anything?
Like the poor lady living in her van. There is a solution to homelessness: building affordable housing, possibly in your neighborhood.
But do people including liberals vote for that? No. They fight it.
But it does make them sad. Withoug affecting home values.
Virtue signaling has already ruined most of the internet, the publishing industry, the New York Times and most of the colleges where football isn’t a priority. Please leave us the movies.”
I think he is regularly on POINT or seriously funny none the less he gets the crowd to understand issues both sides.
ReplyThey used to have a nice mix of “serious” cinema and crowd pleasers in the nominations. Hell, they even nominated COMEDIES once in a while. Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Jaws, Lord of the Rings, etc.all were given Best Picture nominations BEFORE they expanded to the 10 possible nominees.
ReplyThose out in the audience clapping, don’t realize he is talking about them
Replybill is a whiny old man that’s all he does
ReplyPpl are tiered of the dumb S it the woke mob wants everyone to believe. Literally it’s that simple!
ReplyThere have been great movies for decades about injustice. The difference between now and then is that the movies made in previous decades dealt with these subjects in an engaging way that didn’t make me want 2 hours of my life back afterward. A good example of bad film 101 is Exterminate All the Brutes, a 4-hour “documentary” about how white people are apparently the root of every bad thing that has ever happened since the dawn of time and how individual choices and socioeconomics don’t matter in light of the omnipotent power of the white man. Even those Appalachians are in on it!
ReplyApparently Bill has never seen any of the hundreds of superhero films made in the last 10+ years.
ReplyThe spiritual descendants of the Soviet Union are winning.
ReplySo glad you called out liberals and their fight against public housing. My upper middle class suburb of Tinley Park, IL fought public housing vehemently even when it was mandated by the federal government.
ReplyBill you should not let your therapist give you verbal abuse. I was not taught to argue with criticism but you need to it helps you to stop people who merely want to sit on you from doing so you unfairly. Take criticism but fine it down. Dont take more than is abslutely fair or you get into the hands of bullies.
ReplyYep, “entertainment” is not ENTERTAINMENT any longer.
ReplyBasically, the leftwing version of the religious right’s self-flagellation. If you’ll excuse me, I will _not_ repent for anything.
ReplyHow was trial of the chicago 7 a “debbie downer”?
ReplyWhenever Maher talks about the better days of this country, he always harkens back to the era of racism, segregation and when this nation was mostly White. ☺️
ReplyThanks for dropping an ending spoiler for Promising Young Woman, ya so and so…
ReplyThis is how I felt about the transition of the music scene from the 80’s to the 90’s.
ReplyYou can’t get anymore white privilege than bitchin about the oscars.
ReplyAt this point, it’s best to just produce your own films nowadays. Forget Hollywood, just stick to your own guns.
I already got some ideas planning out for the future. This includes a gory, live-action Ninja Turtles series and a Rankin Bass stop-motion revival type of film.
ReplyI think we’ve found Rush Limbaugh’s replacement
ReplyGo woke, go broke. Hollywood has yet to learn this, being so busy preaching and screeching at us whilst patting themselves upon the back. Only movies I had any interest in this year was the Snyder cut and Godzilla. No lectures, just entertainment.
ReplyI have been invited to a not watching the Oscars party. It looks like it will be a great evening.
ReplyYip Black Masks Matter!
ReplyWith all the rules now, the Oscar’s are like 48 film contests.
Reply2018 – “Fuck comic book movies!”
2021 – “A little escapism would be appreciated.”
ReplyFinally !!!!!!!!!
ReplyI lost interest in anything what comes out of Hollywood or is living there . What a waste of your time getting lectured by those overpaid brain washed people , not with my money.
ReplyAccording Bill, doing something about affordable housing means voting for people who supposedly want to build affordable housing. I’d argue that voting is a way of “doing something” without actually doing anything, but makes people feel good about themselves. Not that there’s anything wrong with voting but you’re not doing as much as you think you are. And chances are, your beloved elected officials aren’t going to alleviate your bleeding hearts by doing anything either.
Reply👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🙌🏻😂
ReplyNails it again lol 😆 🤪 😜 👍
Replyand so look on you tube, You’re Kidding Right? Karen Davis, title ‘Ehrn zyour Husband Transitions” really good, better than sad emoji
Reply“When Your Husband transitions” (sorry)
ReplyIn Canada, we can’t see this full show without paying Crave for it, on top of HBO, and can’t find out how much that would be but it appears to be $30/$40 a month, but probably more. I realize we are a small, plague-ridden nation led by a simpleton, but couldn’t you make it easier?
ReplyWhat a cringe take. All good movies
ReplyWes Anderson’s new film should’ve come out this year man 🙁
ReplyDude, spoilers!
ReplyK-drama man, Koreans know how to tell a story and they know how to make a visually appealing series. All I need to watch are k-dramas they’re the best,💕💕💕
ReplyBill’s absolutely killing it! Great writers, and great delivery. Beats most talk show hosts out there today.
ReplyWe need buffy the vampire slayer
ReplyWell, I really liked Minari, The father and Nomadland…
ReplyI like this guy
ReplyExcellent commentary! Bill should tag team with Ricky Gervais!
ReplyFunny how he just spoils the ending of Promising Young Woman.
ReplyPromising Young Woman is a good movie, but Bill is spoiling it here. I watched anyway.
