When you go to the gym to lose weight, NO ONE with laugh about you!
Or do you laugh at sick people who go to the hospital?

The same thing is happening here in Thailand and it’s from eating and drinking too much sugar. 15 years ago it was unusual to see an obese Thai, now it’s the norm.

STEROIDS IS THE #1 FATTENING OF PATIENTS IN AMERICA. HAVE A HANG NAIL, WELL DOSE OF PREDNISONE WILL TAKE CARE OF THAT? IT WILL ALSO PUT ABOUT 40# WITH EACH EPISODE.
ALSO, PATIENTS ARE UNABLE TO LOSE THE WEIGHT WITHOUT BYPASS SURGERY.

Bill, you’re not being brave by going down that well-worn path of 100% blaming the individual. That’s been the dominant approach for at least 50 years and I’ve been around for all of those. Jay Leno and Johnny Carson used to say the same things you’re saying and the audience applauded because our culture has a strong rugged-individual bent and (get ready for this) the religious traditions upon which the country was founded like puritanism and Calvinism also strongly supported individual-willpower narratives. So strong was the influence that it apparently affected even atheists like yourself. And yet while we keep blaming the individual for obesity, our public health has been sucker-punched by the likes of Wonder Bread, trans fats, high fructose corn syrup and a host of other things that get a pass. There’s much more to it than just blaming individuals and endlessly doubling down on that, despite dismal results. I’m beginning to think on this issue you’re more interested in being “right” about it than actually solving the problem. Virtue signaling (as much as I hate that term).

Every single thing Bill said about being fat could be said about his daily weed smoking. Wasn’t Bill the “libertarian” against religious moralizing? He’s just become a grumpy old man complaining about what everyone else does.

It’s a little more sinister than just people letting themselves go, American food and beverage industry is a huge problem for many reasons, hooking people on sugars is only one of them, hormones in meat is another. For-profit medicine doesn’t help any of this.

Good food is often too/much more expensive. Which doesn’t raise the prospect of staying healthy. It’s much harder to eat healthy if you can barely afford it.

That’s the classic example of “toxic positivity”. No more accountability on one’s self. Just making excuses for being a glutton.
