He’s wrong about it being a pure meritocracy. A lot of it has to do with labels and names. Even the best artist aren’t producing hits reliability. Even the Beatles have had bad and good songs. But a bad song by the Beatles would be played on Spotify more times than a good song by some obscure band because the Beatles are far more popular. So more people will search for them.

Even if you’re the most talented artist in the world and you record objectively the best song in the world and put it on Spotify, you won’t be #1. Because no one knows about you and no one knows to search for this song. While Billy Eilish can publish any song and it will get millions of ‘views’ just because she’s famous.

Jordan Peterson spoke about this on Bill Maher’s show I think… He said that’s a kind of a law of nature, only a small percentage of authors have 90 book sales, and only a small percentage of actors get the most desired roles… Even on Reddit, only a small amount of Sub Reddits have the most subscribers etc.

It may not be about who is most talented, but it is about who is listened to. Talent is subjective. Numbers are not. “The Best” has never and will never drive the industry. People like what they like and there is no amount of bitching and whining that’s going to change that. If you find your niche, you are lucky. Be happy that you found it. But you can’t force it upon the masses. It is that way and will always be that way.

    Bill, you’re wrong.
Sure, in theory (and practical) there are a ton of great artists out there…but as long as they don’t get airtime on the radio, and/or are not played in the clubs, the vast majority of people won’t hear about them.
The streaming services that – in theory – enable everyone to listen to every kind of music, have the same problem as – let’s say – Steam has as a (or better: THE) distributing platform for PC games: nobody is able to sieve through all the content on offer, to find the “good” stuff among all the crap.
So, in the end, it’s always the same games from the same developers and publishers that get bought and played the most.
Exactly as is the case in the music industry.
And btw: I put “good” into quotation marks, because “good” and “bad” are always subjective when it comes to taste in music (or movies, or games, or books, or…)
I had people praise albums to me as “absolute must hears”…only to find them to be absolute crap personally.
And I’m pretty sure, my records collection contains quite a few albums which I absolutely love, but which other people equally absolute will hate.
There is no objectivity in taste.

The myth about becoming an internet celebrity, and how you can be famous for so little is a ploy. It has all been used to keep people in a placated position, contented to make material, convinced that fame is a day away, so they can be distracted from the reality that true opportunities have dried up.

Decent well paying careers have gone, occupied by a generation that won’t move on and let new talent into the market; higher education has vastly outpriced itself beyond the means of those with modest incomes; and any kind of political position pretty much requires you to be part of an ever more exclusive club of rich white men to even run. Any real kind of possibility for true growth has been swindled away from the average person. Equality of outcomes exists to keep them from realising this, and it’s the only thing to keep them servile enough to participate, believing one day they’re going to make it big.

This is the American dream and, let’s face it, the dream for a lot of countries where capitalism destroyed any true meritocracy. But it’s not a dream, it’s just the philosophy of lottery.

The left has gone so far off the rails that Bill Maher is becoming what could be labelled as “moderately conservative” on many cultural issues. Bill and so many liberals are finally seeing what disastrous consequences the ideas they’ve championed and advocated for so long are having on our (Western) societies and especially on the (Western) youth at large! I hope and pray that this insanity will soon cease, an effort which would be helped by Hollywood stars like Maher coming forward and admitting that they were wrong and telling people not to commit the same mistakes!

You an I agree on many things, I’m basically a 90’s democrat who’s pro 2nd amendment, but the only political affiliation still available that supports liberty and the constitution is what the current iteration of the left calls “far right”. I’m glad that now Trump is out of office you’re able to see reality. Had Trump still been in office, however, our schools would be prevented from teaching our kids to hate each other based on race or encouraging them to embrace segregation. It’s not conservatives who are trying to strip us of our rights, it’s not conservatives who show up at people’s homes or try to get them fired and banned from everything. You were blinded by Trump derangement syndrome and now the new guy is meeting with historians to figure out how fast and extreme he can fundamentally remake our country in the image of the squad without starting a second Civil War.

2:50 no- the music being heard does not mean quality or meritocracy, it can also mean money thrown at stations for air time. Not saying that there are no real artists in the Billboard’s 100, but there are unknowns that are excellent at playing an instrument but will never get a night at Carnegie Hall. And that’s okay too. Kurt Vonnegurt said that you shouldn’t do something to become rich and famous, do it because of the experience of it. . . . the trophy is that you learned to do something.

My only quibble is the notion that the less popular are somehow not talented. There’s a LOT more going on than that. A lot of it is access to promotion resources.

There’s a lot of good stuff that isn’t well known. A lot less gate keeping is a good thing, but that’s not the only dynamic. However, yes, most musicians are only mediocre, so I can only quibble, not disagree outright.

The problem is that the Grammy’s routinely awards unpopular artists because they have friends in the industry while artists who sell the most are often not given awards.
‘Influencer’ used to be an internal term for NGOs, charities and UN agencies, referring to popular musicians, actors and others with public followings, being an ‘influencer’ was an incidental part of succeeding in something, now people are literally trying to be ‘influencers’ with no effort to succeed at anything.

Know what my friends did the next year?? They barely tried, because they got rewarded always no matter what. This kid in grade 12 had received a 22% in calculus class… Because he never showed up, learned nothing.. only took the class because it was a prerequisite. Then had the nads to complain to his parents… Teacher had to pass him to shut them up… Gave him a “test” and now he works for AMD.. somehow. Lol

Its not that the few really good muscians are that much better then the rest, its that humans, especially young ones, crave a sense of belonging and then can get that, or simulate that, by the shared experience of a song. Or through the shared fandom. So he is wrong that unstreamed talent are unstreamed just because they suck. Its just human nature at fault, not the music industry.

And the famous singers have routinely bought or stolen songs from unknown artists, its not like they are going to admit someone else wrote the song and sings it better.

Rolling Stones is 100% right about streaming. Maher sounds like a dinosaur who never heard of EDM (among other things). The one percent are hardly the most talented artists. They are the ones who are backed by million dollar marketing machines to convince you that they are talented, forcing their grandpa-approved music on all radio stations, buying likes and followers, and algorithmic bias in their favor on Spotify. You must have zero knowledge and appreciation of music to advance the success of 1% “top artists” as being based on any kind of meritocracy

I wouldn’t equate popularity with talent. Mcdonalds has the most popular burger on earth in terms of sales, but that doesn’t make it the “best” burger. They just have a better business plan and I imagine the music industry works the same way. Radio could play lots of different music, but rather they play the same songs on repeat for months at a time.

The music industry has never, and will never work as a meritocracy. The idea that all of the ‘talented’ musicians will rise to the top, is delusional. The industry moguls will only fill their quotas, to the exclusion of more talent than they can handle/exploit. “Making it” in the music industry has always been a matter of being in the ‘right’ place, at the ‘right’ time. That doesn’t mean that the most recognised and rewarded stars aren’t talented, any more than it means that they are. It’s just that those talented musicians were also gifted with the appropriate amount of luck, in order to be where they are. Just because a musician is brought to our attention, doesn’t necessarily mean that they are the greatest in their craft. What it means is that a record company has invested a huge amount of money into making sure that you hear/see them. Without the considerable power of a major record label, it is highly unlikely that, irrespective of the level of talent of an artist, that they will be heard by the majority of the record buying public. Radio stations the world over, are influenced to a colossal extent, by the record labels. It is simply a symbiosis between corporate machines. Of course, there will always be minor exceptions to this, but being heard, at a time when an A and R executive can ‘use’ that artist, is every bit as important as rehearsing for the prerequisite 10,000 hours to acquire the appropriate level of talent and skill. To infer otherwise, is ridiculous. Crap will always be crap. But to say that success is conferred upon only the most deserving, is not only uninformed, but demeaning to the innumerable talented, and driven artists, who never got that break. And I am bitterly disappointed in someone so “socially aware”, who would espouse as much.

Normally love your show Bill and often I agree with you, but the grammy comparison doesn’t add up. Winning Grammys doesn’t have anything to do with talent. Big Record Labels push their product by influencing radiostations, streaming services and, by doing so, the charts. With it they created a continuous loop of drap. A better comparison would be wealthy parents bribing schools to give their kids higher grades. And in a way isn’t that what is happening and creates these spoiled middle class brats? Musicians outside this “top” really aren’t spoiled and untalented. They work their butts of to do what they do best: making great music (which often is being “parazitised” on by “stars”. Taylor Swift’s last Grammy winning album was completely written by a guy from the band The National. The National made great, critically acclaimed, albums. But non of them gave him the success as with one Taylor Swift record. And there are multiple other examples)

Absolutely love Bill Maher but no. There are so many amazing musicians who never get the public recognition they deserve. And many who don’t really care because they are in it for the love of the music. Are there lots of bad ones too? Sure. But there are so many brilliant musicians who will never be famous for whatever reason- they’re lousy business people, they’re in a competitive field where it’s nearly impossible to get through, they have to hold down a day job because they have a family, whatever. There are lots of great, talented musicians who are famous (and lousy ones too). Fame does not equate to brilliance.

My dad was a prodigy classical and jazz pianist who spent his life as a piano teacher and playing in jazz bands in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. No one outside those circles knew his name but he played with some of the great bands as a stand in. My family has jazz roots that go all the way back to the 30s with my grandfather. He even named my dad after a jazz artist who was his close friend. As a pianist my dad is the best I have ever seen and I have seen a lot. He “did” music better than anyone. He played in jazz bands on the beach into his 70s. The night he died, he played his regular gig as a pianist in a Chinese restaurant, then went home and passed in his sleep at the age of 75. He probably did not give one rip about being famous as long as he was happy and he could play and enjoy a few (and a few more) drinks.

I know personally several jazz guitarists at that level – they are professional, but they play with bands, aren’t famous, don’t care, because they live and breathe the music and that’s all that matters to them. Music is a business and that business has to be marketed. Like my dad, they wouldn’t know a marketing plan if it flew through the window and knocked them right over.

I would rather stick pencils in my eyes than listen to Cardi B.

I’ve enjoyed a lot of Maher’s comments in the past, but don’t agree with him here. So the Rolling Stones thinks the music industry isn’t inclusive enough. So what? If voting on who “good artists” are were opened up to more people actually listening to and buying or downloading music, maybe the RS is right that the award results would look differently. I don’t see that related to entitlement-ism.

And shame on you, Maher, for presuming to know what “good [music]” is. Democratize taste. Even though I don’t like a lot of modern music despite being a young woman, I don’t think I and people like me should hold a monopoly on what constitutes “good music” (or art…). Let the majority decide what they like the most, not gate-keepers of artistic tastes.

I have a friend who is a musician outside of his day job and the music his band makes is unbelievably beautiful and incredibly creative. I am black and better at most things than most other people. At my left wing college I was told by white people I was racist because I did not hold myself back for other black people. I also release music on streaming services. It is more than good music, it takes promotion and it has taken me five years to .earn how to produce my own music. I still make money off of if even though the production sucks. Also many of those 40,000 tracks a day are music that has been done years ago and has not been released. Most people also stream what is on the radio and what happens to be the current trend. Nothing new about that. It’s very hard to write a hit song but most musicians just hope to fit a niche. It’s also not like Rolling Stone really searches for new music. I never listened to popular music so I don’t write that sort of music. I am also gonna abandon my current band for a while and release a country album next year cause I lean towards singer songwriter music. I do it for myself. I am just happy I can get my music out there. That’s a gift. Most of my friends are also really critically acclaimed musicians so I have been really embarrassed by my music until this next album I am releasing. I don’t need to be super popular. I think ma h people these days release music as an elaborate hobby. It’s great we can do that.

I generally enjoy your show and comments. After this segment I’m thinking about never watching your material again. The music industry is a documentable monopoly on all levels, they run drugs and money launder so that there is no way on earth that the small guy could compete. Then they make deals with other business which further degrade and erode artists rights and livihoods, you know it’s a a joke. Most of the top acts have ended up suing their label’s.Prince wrote SLAVE on his face. MJ say they were going to kill him. Many thousands of artists die of drugs because they are drug mules in the first place for this hellish industry. In this case, since you are in California and know how the sausage factory really works (corporate agendas), you are just plain lying about everything and have lost a lot of integrity as a human being. Just search music industry and drugs, music industry and payola, music industry and money laundering…it changes every year though…it gets worse and more sophisticated. Actually the only thing I got out of this was the honest article about the subject. It’s not ok to screw people over Bill, especially as an entertainer you should appreciate the space we come from to make amusement for others as our pastime and for very few “career”, that should not be exploited. Even when a musicians is actually successful in that industry, it’s because they work for the machine and no longer to serve music, so it’s not success no matter how many awards and billions they throw at it. I think really it all came to a grinding halt when tech destroyed the CD market. The music took a huge nose dive because talented people couldn’t make a living on the talent side, so only the crooks remained. That is why you have Wet Ass Pussy in your playlist you turd.

Sorry, but this interpretation of the Rolling stones article just totally misses the point.
The fact that a small fraction of all music gets most of the attention whereas the rest is ignored of the public is obviously not a matter of quality but a problem of exposure. Of course, the more a song is played, the more likely it is to be suggested to other listeners. It’s a snowballing effect that has nothing to do with quality -and it is not new either. I sincerely hope that “Despacito” or the “Macarena” are noone’s favorite songs… yet, they were the most listened tracks of their time, regardless their quality or the type of technology used to play them.
The point of that kind of observation, I think, is realizing that there is so much more great music that we don’t know about just because the industry streamlines what they want to show. Then, when you enter YouTube or whatever, instead of looking for the song that you can hear all around you, just look for something obscure that you like and let the algorith find similar stuff. We all have discovered countless great albums that way–and most of them get much fewer views than they deserve…

No–you’re wrong to base lack of success in music due to producing “bad music.” That’s just too black and white. Look at Miley Cyrus; do you think she’d have become as famous if her dad weren’t already a famous singer; do you think she’d have gotten into Disney? What about Willow Smith with her hit song “Whip my hair back and forth”? And then, how about Rebecca Black who went viral and made another song despite having bad music.
Your paradigm is far too simplistic; it’s just a way to bash on people who are already struggling while rewarding rich overlords for their “meritocracy,” nevermind that those most “successful” in society already were ahead of the game from birth.

Incoherent. First he says that, essentially, things are popular because they’re the best. Which is nonsense because that would mean, for example, that the finest cuisine ever created is McDonald’s and the greatest single of all time would have to be Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyprus, which holds the record for the longest stretch at No. 1 with 19 weeks. Not even Billy Ray Cyrus thinks that.

But not content with this obvious idiocy, Bill then goes on to contradict himself completely by saying the most popular people (Kylie Jenner is his main example) are in fact not the best but the worst. I’m no fan of slebs (I had to Google Kylie Jenner ffs) but this is abject from Bill. Two ‘arguments’ that not only don’t make sense on their own merits but that flatly contradict each other. You can either believe one or the other (although you’d be wrong to) but it’s logically impossible to believe both.

Man I remember when Bill used to be smart *and* funny. He’s neither now.

“Equality of Outcomes” refers to economic and financial equality, which simply makes sense from a societal point of view. But of course pot-smoking GOPer assholes like Bill Maher will immediately jump on the Harrison Bergeron bandwagon to distract and distort from the real issue.

I used to be a liberal. I still am and just like Bill. But I am forced to vote right in my country cause the left has just gone bonkers and well I live in a democracy so I know that even if the right is in power they can’t do shit to the real “liberal” values like take away our freedom. Trump was called a fascist tell me what freedom did he take away. In My country Modi is called a fascist. Yes they are conservative there was a time when the Political party members of the current PM that I voted for used to want to Ban Valentines day. That time they were not in power. Today the right is in power but there is not such thing on valentine’s day. If anyone tries to stop couples on Valentine’s day they will get arrested.
You can’t its a violation of human rights. When the same party came to power in one of the states the CM(Like a senator) started a Special task force to fight eve teasing.
Then some cops in this task force arrested many couples who used to sit in parks and then called their parents and did all that stuff. Then the CM a saffron clad right wing Sadhu suspended them and made it clear that lovers are not to be disturbed unless the girl is against her will. That can be found by observing the couple from far and not going to them and asking them who they or if she is fine.
Thats democracy. for you. The left in my country want Muslim immigrants to come in to increase the muslim vote bank just like in USA they want mexicans and African and middle eastern muslims. We a developing country don’t have a refugee police so they just cross the border illegally.
I think liberals can live under a conservative party in a democracy atleast the country is safe. But you can’t let the liberals rule the current liberal/left has gone bonkers and they have collluded with the “right” yes the communists were the right actually because of the ‘fascism” in some countries and so were muslims they were the extreme right in thier countries because of their fasisct laws and the way they treat gays and woman.

A simple, overlooked point… Streaming services have incentivized shit music. When physical sales was king, bands came and left so much faster. The shit bands never sold and dissolved because the $ wasn’t there. Profit, at one time, was the litmus paper for and band. $ = viability. There is,no such thing as a starving artist anymore.

I don’t completely agree with Bill here about “the walls” having been torn down, because even though artists have “a chance” to be heard, the “top artists” are still mostly the ones the masses have been told about or exposed to through some “media outlet” such as radio or TV.

I like how the deluded fans of this show are clapping and cheering about what every conservative was being called a racist over the last 20 years…which is equality of opportunity is what matters, not equality of outcome. The critical race theorists literally call that racism. According to Joe Biden, Bill Maher is now officially Jim Crow on steroids. I guess better late than never, but certainly no “courage” points for Bill Maher on this one, this falls under the “duh, no shit” category.

Vastly more people want to be music stars than there are chances to be such. That means the competition is very intense and most will be left out in the cold even most talented people. You have to be good AND Lucky. If one can’t accept that than one should try something else.

This is true for almost all the arts.

Is it not a bit ironic to say it’s not about opportunity, it’s about talent, then say Paris is what caused this culture of untalented people expecting to be famous? She and many others are famous despite lack of talent and because of privilege and chance (opportunities that don’t exist even for extremely talented people).

I don’t disagree about Paris. Paris did nothing noteworthy as an entertainer. But she and many others benefit from privilege to get where they are. I also don’t disagree many people think they should be famous when they are NOT talented.

But it is definitely incorrect to say music only gets popular because it’s good and that those performing it are the best. Only a small percentage of fame worthy people are blessed with the luck to make it big.

Same is often true for athletes. Different things happen… The teams they play on. Injury. The right scout at the right time. The mood of a coach or recruiter. It goes on and on.

It’s called the “Paretto Principle” – or the 80/20 rule… and then on tope of that you get the 80/20 rule again as you go from moderately successful, to ‘successful’, and then 80/20 again as you go to ‘very successful’, and then 80/20 again as you go to the extremely successful (stars), and finally you get the Beyonces’ (diva’s etc) which is the 20 on 20 on 20 on 20 on 20 on 20% – i.e. a very small minority are big wigs… and what of their songs… 20 on 20 and 20 on 20 on 20 on 20% and so on and so forth…

EXAMPLE of the FAILURE OF EQUALITY OF OUTCOMES – I am teaching my last semester at a Minnesota university program designed to increase minority student success. The program was given over 15 million dollars, most students pay nothing, get free meals, transportation, free tutors, counselors, etc, and awoke culture warriors were hired to run the program. The problem was that many of the students in the program do not take advantage of all the very expensive help made available to them, make little to no effort, and the quality of their work is very poor. The University’s solution is to have abysmally low academic standards and to turn a blind eye to rampant cheating. Why? Because if we fail students, then we are only perpetuating institutionalized racism. This is the liberal version of progress.

Well Bill I agree with you in theory, but your example is off. The Grammy’s award the Artists who have made the most money. These Artist have talent and have been selected because they can be packaged and sold to the public. Do you really think Frosted Flakes are better than the granola at the country store?
The premise that anyone has listened to all the artists on Spotify is laughable. Have you noticed that when you open Spotify you see those same “great” artists? Why, because the record companies are promoting them, buying ads, putting them in your face. That’s who you see, that’s who TMZ talks about, that’s who is on the radio and that’s who you listen to.
The record companies have taken back the internet, anyone can release but you can’t be seen. But there are artists who will never get a Grammy who are talented and are putting out good music. To bad you’ll never hear them.
