From white women appropriating traditional Black hairstyles to society telling Black men to keep their hair short and neat, natural Black hair is a source of unsolicited opinion and controversy. Daily Show Correspondent Dulcé Sloan, Writer Josh Johnson and Deep Dive Producer Chelsea Williamson join Roy Wood Jr. to discuss the history and politics around how we treat Black hair in America using anecdotes from their own natural hair journeys.

I’m white but my wife is black. and we have 2 kids. 4 people with 4 very different hair textures and curl patterns. She did the big chop a few years before we met, but I was still there for a lot of her journey in figuring out her natural hair. It took her 10 years to finally find a routine and set of products that give her consistent results.

My wife has beautiful straight hair, and her sister has beautiful curly hair. The strange thing is that my wife pays the salon to curl her hair, and her sister goes with her and also pays to straighten her hair.

Girls in sports and dance have always braided their hair, of all races and cultures, for utilitarian purposes. All of the girls in my dance classes growing up, black, white, Asian and LatinX, braided their hair in cornrows and/or french braids. I as a black girl never thought it was cultural appropriation.
I have an issue with folks renaming our hairstyles and calling them a trend like they’re new when we’ve been doing it for thousands of years.

20:27 I wonder, do you judge the Average White Band and the Beastie Boys and Gary Moore and Eric Clapton as well? Because of their “cultural appropriation of Black music”?
