Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Televangelists (HBO)

U.S. tax law allows television preachers to get away with almost anything. We know this from personal experience.

Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption will not be able to accept donations from Church supporters from the states of Mississippi, Nevada, Pennsylvania, or South Carolina. We apologize for any inconvenience.

I keep thinking of this story about an adopted dog that destroyed and
barked at every broom in the house when he was taken home. It turns out the
dog was beaten with a broom by its old owners and forever hated brooms
    because of it.

That is what I believe what happens with god sometimes; Televangelism and
other assholes USE their religion to abuse people and the people naturally
learn to hate the religion rather than the assholes abusing it. Only when I
can avoid these kind of people and their media can I feel comfortable
enough to pray like I did as a kid rather than pretend to be Brian from
Family Guy and cynically knee-jerk with pavlovian atheism. So, to hell with
these snake oil salesmen and their SIDE EFFECT of making faith detestable

This had me laughing my ass off! Hahaha and that’s why the Catholic Church
will never die. I am Catholic. We get a lot of flack and have done some
horrible things in our history, but nothing of this sort. And if we
have…like what happened with the “Bishop of Bling” in Germany, the Pope
    took care of him swiftly.

John Oliver s attack of Christianity has an underlying message. Of course
Christians have demons amongst their midst and Christians just like John
Oliver can spot them a mile away but Oliver has a special sore spot for
Christianity that is if he admits that Christianity is real then he admits
that his sin and his way of life is real. He is a very charismatic man, so
was Hitler. but in the end both of them are processed by sinful demons

Growing up as a pastors kid, watching this type of gospel being preached by
those ministers pisses me off. As a kid, my father did so many awesome
things for the community around us and almost all of it came from his own
hard work and pocket (that is, if he had anything in his pocket). I
remember one time at Walmart my dad bought one of those cheep rotisserie
chickens because we had nothing at the house and the total was less than $4
and he only had change and was like 60 cents short, so I ended up asking my
neighbor to hang out just so I could eat, while my parents went to bed
hungry. My parents didn’t have kids for their first 7 years of marriage
because their parsonage was a trailer next to a tiny church that didn’t
have a working stove or oven. I can’t believe all of these pastors asking
for and buying private jets, because in middle school I had to get dropped
off in a purple PT cruiser with pink flames everyday because a mechanic
from our church gave it to my dad.

It really hurts to see churches that do this. I attend a church that cooks
carrots and joins with other church communities to make food for those who
can’t afford a meal on thanksgiving. My pastor lives well but not well
enough to buy a small air craft, just about as well as anyone else in the
church. :/ He definitely wouldn’t ask for money for himself outright. Such
a shame to see such corruption.

Desperate people tryng to do everything to get more money from other
desperate people. It is not the people who are evil, it is the US system,
which let’s people come up with any audacious idea to earn money and in a
system where anyone can become poor from one day to the other through
anything you of course can never have enough money. The biggest profiteurs
of this system are the drug lords, the porn industry and the US military.

Wait, let me get this straight, these guys are masquerading as Christians,
NOT as Satanists, right? If so, how is that even possible? The only way
that is possible is if neither they nor ANY of their followers know
ANYTHING about Christianity. Greed is one of the seven deadly sins, and the
entity associated with it is called Mammon – a demon!

The bible explicitly warns against these preachers, they were identified

I think everyone missed the point. The “tithes” or “seeds” have already
been taxed as it is from a person’s income. If you are dumb enough to give
your money to these people, that’s your own problem, but the money
shouldn’t be taxed again. It’s a government grab to aid with its own
stupidity with budgeting, and it feeds off the emotions of people who are
against idiocy. But that is none of your business! The information is out
there. If you’re too dumb to know what you’re handing hard earned money to
you deserve to be a victim of this scam. You may not like it, but if you
want the government to tax every time money has changed hands, then pay
taxes on the money in your birthday card, or what you get for doing chores,
or any time you get money and don’t receive a printed receipt.

8:02 John Oliver uses sexist language when he refers to god as “he”. And
for all of you who think that non-sexist language is impossible I took the
liberty of translating the sentence into gender neutral english.
John Oliver: “that woman cannot hear the word of god because if she could
    I’m pretty sure he’d be shouting. ….”
John Oliver should have said: “that woman cannot hear the word of god
because if she could I’m pretty sure god would be shouting….”

God Almighty will indeed say some equivalent of F**K YOU GLORIA ( as at 8:18)
    at the appropriate time.
It is called the Last Judgement.
These preachers are of their father the devil and will stand before God to
    account for their viciousness
the tragedy is that the innocents who let themselves be deceived, in some
cases literally to death, did not know the Bible which said
“You shall not tempt the Lord your God”
God cannot be bribed. It is a sin to try it.

The “prosperity gospel” would be disgusting to Jesus. This isn’t what
    Christ wants people to follow.

Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where
moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store
up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not
destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your
treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 19:23-24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is
hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell
you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for
someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

What is even more awful, is had this man been talking about ISLAM or any of

YOU GLORIA, HE WOULD BE DEAD OR IN HIDING SOMEWHERE. When will the church
stand up against this garbage. THIS IS A TV SHOW. This man has taken most
of this out of context and has forgotten THIS IS A SERIOUS RELIGIOUS
PRACTICE for millions. It would be the same if he were to attack THOSE WHO
CHOOSE TO BE MORMONS. Just because some of its practice seems silly to you
it does not give you the right to o disrespectfully attack it. Never have I
ever heard ANY OF THE COPELANDS EVEN HINT AT WHAT THIS ENGLISH HATEFUL
IDIOT HAS IMPLIED. You can always find one DISGRUNTLED EMPLOYEE FOR ANY

YES, GO TO THE DOCTOR GET A BUNCH OF MEDICINE THAT NORMALLY ENDS UP KILLING

Holy Soup | The Shocking Truth of Church Budgets

“…Comparatively, what do churches spend on personnel, buildings and
administration expenses? Those items consume 82 percent of the average
church’s budget, according a study from the Evangelical Christian Credit
    Union.

You could argue about comparing a church’s expenses to a public charity’s
expenses. But the enormous disparity is striking, especially to the public.
It’s made worse by looking at how churches allocate funds to direct
ministries. According to the ECCU study, churches use 3 percent of their
budget for children’s and youth programs, and 2 percent for adult programs.
Local and national benevolence receives 1 percent of the typical church
    budget.”

I have come to greatly admire John Oliver for his unique ability to
identify the long list of hypocracies that exist in our society. Our laws
that grant tax exemption to so-called religious organizations are
consistent with systems of law and taxation that find their origins in
entrenched privilege. Thomas Paine took organized religion to task for its
coercive and manipulative character. Too many people have chosen to put
their faith in self-proclaimed deliverers of religious doctrine rather than
use the intelligence with which they are born. Eric Hoffer warned of this
problem with human nature in his book “The True Believer.” The problem
should have been dealt with when the framers came together to write a new
constitution for the new United States. Americans were guaranteed freedom
of religion. However, those of us not involved with religion were not
    guaranteed freedom from religion.

I have no problem with people believing in a conscious creator or even that
human beings were given a soul 5,000 years ago. What I have a problem with
is that I am required to subsidize their belief system by the payment of
taxes because their incomes and property are tax exempt.
