Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: State Legislatures and ALEC (HBO)

Published on November 3, 2014

While midterm coverage is largely focused on the parts of Congress that do very little, vital (and bizarre) midterm elections are going unexamined. State legislators pass a lot of bills, and some of that efficiency is thanks to a group called ALEC that writes legislation for them. It’s as shady as it sounds!

This is a frightening reality check on the current state of American

State Legislatures are running amok, unchecked, unopposed, and with the
majority of the nation asleep at the wheel unaware that while the clowns in
Washington bring the nation to a standstill by opposing legislation just
because the other ‘side’ has introduced it, state legislatures are
introducing hundreds of bills that will have a significant impact on their

Farewell checks and balances, goodbye accountability, so long democracy –
you were indeed a fair weather friend.

Senator says that Islam is a cancer and must be exterminated for the “good”
of America: No response from the crowd.

    Senator goes mad: *WOOOOOOOOOOOOO*

    F***ing what?

Black people don’t like to work hard i grew up with black people and some i
know are now in jail because most are lazy that’s not racist that’s truth

Islam has the potentially to be cancerous if we let it get out of control

abortions should be illegal and its murder to the unborn because the men
and woman is being reckless and not using protection and birth control pill
if you cant wrap it up don’t fuck

gun control is stupid because it dose not hurt criminals

gays should have the right to be married because there is nothing different
    between homosexual and heterosexual

weed should be legal medical and recreational because the benefits out way
    the bad

Islam isn’t a cancer, eh? The religion of peace. Just ask the 300 million
Muslims who either agree with Muslim radicalism or have no opinion on it.

If getting elected is that easy, maybe a college student should try to run

State legislators pass 24,000 bills combined . I’m sure if there were 50

Nowadays, when freedom of press is a thing, I think it’s more of an issue
that press can choose what NOT to tell us.

    To the topic in hand:
As a foreigner, I find the media in USA to be very politically motivated.
Few say it out loud, but some news networks are blatantly republican and
    the others are supporting democrats.

I find that weird because I’m used to watching and reading news that all
seem to cover different issues and other matters from a fairly neutral

That is, aside from gay “rights” and immigrancy. If a politician here says
that they don’t want gay people to be able to marry, they’ll immediately
get labelled as a homophobe and a terrible person in general. And god
forgive you if you say a bad thing about immigrancy.

Sparta DIDN’T fend off Persia with 300 people.
    1. Sparta wasn’t the only city state involved in either battle
of Thermopylae or the entire war.
2.there were about 5000-20000 greek soldiers at Thermopylae. 1500 of whom
actually held the famous passage, not 300.
3.the united Greek states actually lost the battle of Thermopylae.

It is completely ok to call a Religion founded by a terrorist, to
indoctrinate new terrorists and repeatedly claiming the goal of subjugating
everyone else, a cancer. If you read the quran it shines a light on Islam.
Calling Muslims cancer is not ok of course! There are plenty good muslims,
but they in my opinion not living up to the example set by Muhammed.

I guess an American viewer or anyone who cares about democracy (the former
is evidently not necessarily the latter) would rather laugh than cry. This
in a country where in academic surveys back in the 1990s a majority of
respondents were unable to say or name correctly which PARTY their member
of Congress belonged to. Think it’s improved since?

  • Jeff Maehr 5 years ago

Wow… so much BS with so much truth… typical of confused Americans who
have no anchor in life. “Right to choose?” Woman? What about the
contract she entered into by letting some guy treat her as a whore… which
she gratefully received and it produced a human being she wants to cast
away like so much garbage… a wrapper on her latest fast food meal? This
is such a pathetic statement to the fall of America… one which was
foretold thousands of years ago… but you can laugh that off while you
    continue running off the cliff!!!

that John Oliver shows us each week just leaves me with a sense of defeated

I can’t even sum it up anymore, I am just going to go into the corner and

“Restricting a womans right to choose (to murder a baby).”

Yes. Yes you’re right, I am going to do everything in my power to restrict
you from that choice. When it comes to your inconvenience vs the life of a
child, fuck your choice. You have no right to that choice. Just because a
lot of people agree with you doesn’t make you right. Most people used to
    think the world was flat.

So speaking about problems that african american community faces, is now
racist? Like ganging and staying away from education, the same one that

Black people suffer greatly, and it’s sad that people who are in controll
