Are college basketball players keeping the lights on? Keeping the heat on? Keeping society moving along smoothly? No. They play basketball. They provide entertainment 3-4 hours a week while getting every opportunity to learn a valuable skill for free.
I really do love this show, that being said I disagree. Presumably these kids are going to school on a scholarship meaning they’re not paying for school. If you want to get paid like an athlete then you should not have that scholarship be paying for school and everything else that goes along with it like almost all of us
The money the schools make from exploiting student athletes isn’t even the disgusting part; it’s the billions of dollars that the NCAA (a non-profit organization) makes off the schools’ exploitation of student athletes.
Probably the best representation of this issue to date.
If they want to have unpaid athletes and claim their education is their compensation, then the school should only be able to make up to an amount equal to the combined scholarships of the team. That would make them amateurs athletes. If there was no money to be made in their sports.
Obviously, as well, coaches would need to be pulled from current university staff who decides to coach for the love of the game the way (most) high school sports are run. Hiring a professional coach immediately makes this not amateur sports.
Any other revenue? Donated to charity to maintain the integrity of amateur competition, the way ACTUAL amateur sports do.
Pick your poison…. Loose all the free education, meals, dorm’s etc. and get paid…. O wait, then a lot of the players on the bench won’t get paid enough to pay for the education….
