ReplyI can see how Woopie would see it that way. It’s simplistic and historically inaccurate but I get how, as an American living in a nation that has accepted Jews more readily than it accepted black folk, that she could see race exactly as she described it. It really goes to show you how much race is a social construct and the perception of it is dictated by the society you consider yourself to be most a part of.

ReplyWow. That was terrible. God bless Stephen for trying to hand Whoopi a rope to get out of the hole she dug for herself, but it’s too bad she refused to take it and kept on digging. The ignorance of that woman is unbelievable for someone who has traditionally professed social values and advocated for racial harmony. Forgive me for putting words in her mouth, but it sounds like she can’t acknowledge any racism but that which is directed at the Black community.
She seems to be blissfully unaware that prior to Hitler’s final sollution, the Jewish community was demonized and scapegoats in a number of ways including horribly offensive cartoon charachichures not too dissimilar from how African Americans were depicted in animation and media following reconstruction. She also seems to forget that the Jewish people, while being less identifiable today, were clearly different in appearance from their Egyptian masters, who bore more resemblance to Whoopi Goldberg herself.
It’s not just that she is ignorant but she refuses to do the same work on herself that she would expect white people like me to do. I now recognize white privilege and the long standing effects of institutional racism, but she will only “apologize” for offending others? She won’t take on that her opinion is just flat out wrong or admit that she needs to evolve her perception of what racism is? “Please stop contacting me”? Seriously?!
Grow up Ms. Goldberg.
