The fight to change Washington’s NFL team name and its mascot has been ongoing since the 1960s, but the shift from being called an anti-Native slur to the “Commanders” gained traction after the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests and movements for racial justice. Sports journalist Bomani Jones and Crystal Echo Hawk, executive director of IllumiNative and citizen of Pawnee, join Roy Wood Jr. to discuss harmful Native imagery in sports branding, how many Americans lack an understanding of Native issues, and what’s next for other professional sports teams (looking at you, Kansas City).

Great discussion! “Red Tails” to honor Tuskegee airmen would have been my choice. Cleveland’s baseball team could have tied “Guardians” to the Coast Guard’s regional headquarters for the Great Lakes.

Chiefs fans will fight like Washinton fans…..Will state the team is named after the Mayor of KC at the time the team arrived in KC. Not realizing H Roe Bartle was a white man culturally appropriating the Native culture…..even made is own “Tribe”….Tribe of the Mic-o-say, associated the The Boy Scouts here in Missouri
