    To all the people saying it should be by ability and not race/gender, of course we are talking about QUALIFIED black women here. But, it is also important to note that one of the roles of the Senator is to represent their constituents and if the Senate doesn’t accurately represent the population then, it can’t effectively address the issues faced by the population and therefore, having less black women makes the Senate less able. Let’s not pretend that we live in a meritocracy lol.

    As long as the electoral systems result in single winners, minorities will struggle for representation. Most democratic countries – over 85% – use some form of proportional electoral system. The result is legislatures that reflect all voters, not just the largest group.
