I didn’t even know they have tournaments let alone people used those words in a Scrabble game. But why though?

Pathetic. If the word exists, it has to exist in Scrabble as well.

    Edit: covfefe doesn’t count!

The joke at the end reminds me of Tim Minchin’s song Prejudice. The song is amazing and I can only recommend that anyone gives it a listen.

I would say, the game (although, I don’t think they’ve made it into a boardgame?) Hangman, is racist.

Literally every word has the potential to offend. What’s the alternative? Let’s just ban all words and speech. We will communicate with hand gestures. Oh wait, that can offend people too.

I can see both sides When scrabble player plays a word it is not the same thing as saying the word in context. If somebody calls a black person the N Word, you are doing it to make them feel ashamed of their heritage. When somebody uses the word in scrabble, they just had the letters to spell the word, and it was the highest scoring word they could do. they are not saying the word about anybody or saying anything about the word, they just had the letters to spell it, So they did. But there is no reason they NEED to be playable either. It doesn’t ultimately change that much about the game to decide that slur words are not appropriate for gameplay.

I’m with the professor here. Banning supposedly bad words does NOTHING to solve racism. It’s the context in which they are used and the meaning placed behind them that matters

Racist words were coined to be just that, racist. Now since they have been around for so long its okay to use them? They were meant to be hateful and deme
aning in the first place still. So now they are supposed to be what exactly? Demeaning and racist, or just a word that has been used for so long that it no longer has meaning and is what, descriptive? I was always told that the definition of a word was important. How are the words used, context, etc.? Just saying that its okay nowadays because they are what? Prevalent, and therefore have no long lasting connotations anymore? Asking.

Greybeard? I’ve always used that affectionately, and will continue to do so when I hit 55…65…whatever the line is. Scrabble should definitely use discretion when it comes to this list. Get N-bomb level things out of tournaments, but keep the SJW overthinking stuff in.

I think they should go after the “go to jail” on monopoly….

and the Game of Life isn’t really accurate when it comes to life issues…

And that Tetris game.. all those colors have to fit in their specific spots! Clearly against social classes…

Games are ONLY offensive if you want them to be! It’s HOW you interpret things in life which make them acceptable or not.

This is only the tip of the iceberg in respect of what members of the board game community are doing to strive for racial progress. From games that tackle subjects like the Underground Railroad (Freedom: The Underground Railroad). Through content creators in the community calling out designers for failing to correctly depict skin tones in pre-history (Paleo). To a growing awareness about how prevalent colonialism is used as a theme in board games and a pivot towards examining the impact of it rather than allowing the English to continue to erase and ignore what they did to the world. Board games across the spectrum are growing in maturity and expression – however they still have a long way to go because they tolerate designers like Phil Eklund and
    Daniele Tascini.
