Sinterklaas isn’t Santa. if anything Santa is Sinterklaas. Do some research idiots.
ReplySame in Belgium. People get really angry when you point out the racism but I am still waiting for answer on why zwarte pete wears an afro.
ReplyReminds me of the confederate flag debate. Many people feel that it’s racist but some claim it’s a part of their heritage and should not be removed.
ReplyBlackface is racist if you make it racist. ?♀️
ReplyA big non issue, if there ever was one.
ReplyOkay why cant black people be the black pete in that festival…if there arent that many black people in Holland then just dont do it….traditions or not…that is blackface and it is racist because it is teaching society that black people whoop your ass and are scary….why is not the other way around santa beating childrena and black pete giving children treats and gifts
ReplyYou don’t get completely black from going down a chimney (hands, neck and all). Red lips and an afro?? How can anyone defend or deny the obvious racist overtones. I’m from the Netherlands, grew up with this tradition. It’s just distasteful how late we are to raising awareness.
ReplyThey confused sinterklaas (st. Nicolas) with santa, yes they derive from the same person (saint Nicolas) but it is celebrated seperately. The festivities of sinterklaas do not include raindears and a sled but a horse with which sinterklaas rides over de rooftops. He doesnt go down the chimneys 🙂
So indeed there is the explenation of dirt of the chimney but others say that they resemble the moors that Saint Nicolas freed
Also all throughout the Netherlands the festivites are being altered to fit the chimney narrotive with “roetveeg piet”.
ReplyI’m from the Netherlands (Holland) and of mixed race. I love your show, but this time you don’t have all your facts correct. The wooping is long gone. 😉 It’s a sensitive subject, but things are changing around ‘Sinterklaas and zwarte Piet’. This year at the official arrival on TV the Saint was accompanied by soot Pieten, as they are supposed to be. People (the adults) should start talking and listening to each other, in stead of cursing and threathening each other and that goes both ways.
ReplyDoesn’t Krampus whip kids?
ReplyAmerica has a thing with blackface because of their history and culture but Europe doesn’t. For us blackface isn’t a big deal. Get over it. And most important, stop trying to impose your values on everyone else.
ReplyWhy blackface is still part of Dutch holiday tradition| Vox https://youtu.be/jBqoH-qx-os
ReplyEvery year around Christmas there’s a video on this, as if they are going to change their tradition.
Well many countries celebrate a poor carpenter in his 30s that was nailed to a cross for suggesting everybody to be noce to each other, with a rabbit and hidong chocolate eggs…
ReplyThis is the moment a little girl was pulled out from under the rubble as Russian and Syrian regime air strikes targeted her home in northwestern Syria. 2020 HUMAN Rights Watch ) Happy USA ?irak
ReplyWhite people, just fucking stop ? defending your very very racist “traditions” and admit they’re wrong, change them and move on. ? Dig your heels and trust me, future demographics are not in your favor… Hold tight to those superiority and racist views and we shall see what people of color choose to remember when they’re the majority and many of YOU are old, weak and rely on them to be good and kind to you. ??♀️ Think about it…?
Reply??
ReplyThis is very wrong if you aren’t for there. Like guns in America , whales fishing in China or child prostitution in India. Tips don’t go the Netherlands if you don’t like black faces.
ReplyAm I the only one that thought it was a Mayor Pete joke?
ReplyI LOVE YOU TREVOR NOAH!!!
ReplyBtw Dutch too ?
