The country I live in requires a drivers licence or a passport or a student ID or a state ID to vote as do all other european countries the reason for that is that the dominant party in power cannot use the previous election records which show which citizens voted and which didn’t to use the names of who did not and vote in their name without proof of who is voting

I am getting sick of the idea that Republicans are the party of White Supremacy. They are completely owned by corporations and billionaires and it is crystal clear they will use any excuse to stay in power. A larger percentage of whites support progressive policies than don’t and assholes like Maher get on my nerves trying to look “cool” by wishing white people away. You first Bill.

It’s a twisted time where a blatantly false narrative regarding the new Georgia voting laws continues to get pushed to the public and no one is held accountable. Read how it expands access in fact, not this alarmism as he rightly put it

The demography argument is not that valid in my opinion. A lot of Latin Americans are really conservative and by the ineffectiveness of the Democratic party I can see a lot of Asian Americans also changing their voting patterns. It’s not just about demography. If the Republicans move away from the far right and extreme religious attitude like in Europe I can see them getting a lot more support from the minority communities. It’s the alignment with the far right visceral opposition to immigration that’s holding them off.

I’m generalising here, but I think there are 3 groups of ppl involved in this voting issue.
    A – Citizens with ID
    B – Citizens without ID
    C – Undocumented immigrants

Republicans express that the voting bar should be set at the ID level because it aims at ensuring that only A gets to vote, and C doesn’t.
-> because why should non-citizens have any voice in electing officials, as compared to citizens?

However, Republicans would overlook B (citizens without ID), and reply “just get an ID”.

Now, Democrats would say that Republicans are intentionally targeting B in the new voting laws. But Democrats too ignore/overlook (arguably intentional or not) group C’s impact on voting.
-> arguably, it would be easier for C to vote if the ID laws are not well enforced.

So ultimately, I think this is the entire debate of voting, citizenship, and the social contract. Who has the right to vote? Is having an ID a good enough standard to ensure a fair election? What are the other alternatives? Should undocumented immigrants have a say in how the state government is run? -> keeping in mind that it often times works with, and against citizens (with or without ID).

It doesn’t negatively impact their voting. At all. It’s a wonder it doesn’t already exist in GA. Not because I think he had a point, but because I’d like to be able to identify the false facts when I see them spouted by someone else who doesn’t have a sensible person correcting them. Not sure if that makes sense but just saying “that’s boring, don’t want to talk about it” doesn’t cut it for me, that’s avoiding the topic and just sows a little doubt regarding her opinion. While I agree that laws like those passed recently in Georgia will probably increase voter turnout, the laws themselves will bar the actual votes from being counted.
I find it quite troubling that many of the new ” standards “/regulations adopted by Georgia include the wording that allows local voting boards to ” tailor ” things like early voting days and hours the polls are open to arbitrary and/or capricious days or times. The state of Georgia leaves it up to local electors whether or not they will have early voting the full 17 days and the full 7am to 7pm times that were written into the laws.
All a local voting board has to do/say is that the funds aren’t there, so early voting is limited to the state mandated minimums.

Not only from white people, but also many latino, asians and jews etc, because they think ‘ah well then it doesn’t affect me’. Why not just say ‘there are issues with voting laws, let’s try to fix them for everyone’? As soon as you bring a racial agenda into it you alienate a good proportion of potential supporters. The same is true in reverse, if they framed this as ‘let’s help white voters’ do you think that will get them support from black people, asians, latinos etc? idpol is a cancer, on the left and right.

Voting is a right, for sure, but it’s also a privilege. People fought a DIED for it. You have to put some effort into it. You have to get an ID, get registered, then get off your but to go vote. I’m old enough to remember when you had to show up, on election day, & wait in line to vote. No “Early voting”, no mail in ballots. I don’t remember anyone complaining it was racist. We all had to follow the same rules. It seams like people think if you can’t sit in your recliner & raise your hand to vote, that it’s somehow a restriction on your right to vote. Just put in some effort. If you can’t, maybe it just isn’t that important to you.

The only way left for Republicans to win elections is if fewer people cast ballots for candidates people like and want to vote for? Georgia and 300+ other obvious voter supression initiatives are a whiff of GOP audacity and desperation.

I do believe that the GOP in Georgia is trying to stop voters from voting because they know that Georgia is no longer a Republican Stronghold. I also understand why Major League Baseball pulled the All Star Game from Georgia because I do believe that there are consequences for the things you do. That being said, I believe that it was a miscalculated action on the part of MLB because the local businesses, especially the black owned businesses, won’t be receiving revenue they were expecting to receive. Nothing against Denver, but the black population of Atlanta makes up more than 50% of the entire population of Atlanta. Denver’s black population makes up less than 10%. If anything, the MLB pulling out of Atlanta hurts black business owners as much as the voter laws hurt them.

So can anyone name the pros and cons of the Georgia laws vs other states? Seriously, all I hear is the blame game. I hear its expanding voting days, the only diminished factor is the amount of drop boxes which they never had before until the pandemic came. It seems like the Democrats are just calling it jim crow/voter suppression because the outcome came out in their favor when it had things that favored them so if Republicans wanted to go back to the default option while expanding it in some areas it’s all of a sudden bad because there is more voter integrity involved. Don’t get me stared on the food/water thing where they think people are too stupid to bring their own perishables or ask the poll workers for some. I also hear they’ve reduced wait times instead of long hour lineups. Voter ID or obtainable and paid for by the government, not hard to get or help those that don’t one yet get one if they’re a eligible voter. Democrats spend way more than the GOP yet you don’t see them getting ID or even the basic ones that every US citizen has (unless you’re on a work visa then overstayed but still can have a SSN for some reason).

Just a question? I have watched umpteen media claims that Georgia’s new voting law changes are bad, but I never actually hear any “specifics” on what is bad about the law changes? I don’t frankly have time to try to read wordy legislation, which is “why” I depend on the media to REPORT specifics when the claim is made that the laws are discriminatory. Could someone please cite for me what the changes are? When I tune into conservative media I actually hear SPECIFIC things that seem pretty “fair” to me such as voter ID, monitored drop-boxes, training for poll-watchers, clear rules for absentee mail-in ballots to make sure the person voting is the actual person voting, etc. So, I would like to know, what, exactly is in this law that I don’t know that is suppressing the voting rights of people? I really want to be educated because so far, I haven’t been hearing specifics, just wild claims and flailing of words.

I come from a country where all votes are conducted on paper ballots, so you can do a recount if you need to. Where you have to be a registered voter to vote, and where all voting, including local, state and federal elections are conducted on a Saturday, so the maximum number of people can vote. Oh, and if you haven’t done a pre-poll you must attend the polling station on polling day and have your name crossed off the voting role, or you will get fined. And while your there doing that you may as well vote. Democracy isn’t that hard. The US should give it a try.

When did showing an ID before voting is voter suppression. Almost All countries in Africa vote with an ID during elections. So it means republicans are looking to do the right thing and the dems are not. I was against the law until I heard a somewhat full run through. The Republicans are extremely bad at publicity unlike the left, they create theories and run wild with it even when it’s the BIGGEST LIE IN THE WORLD, but the Republicans would say “read the law” that’s BS. The simple fact is, you cannot have “small government” if the working people can’t take care of themselves. Keep hoarding wealth and privileges at the top (which naturally happens in a mostly free society), and the voters will vote for big government. Working people will vote this way because they can’t take care of themselves with what they make at work -as long as they can STILL VOTE. So, what do you do about that? Limit voting access! Conservatives have to find a way to “grow the bottom” of society, as well as the top, if they want their small government cookie.

The problem with the new Georgia voting law is that republicans are throwing a smoke screen by expanding some access while obscuring their real intention with this law. And that is… by taking the election supervision away from the Secretary of State (that is elected by the people) and give it to somebody named by the legislature (which of course is majority republican) they are going to be able to do what Trump wanted and that is to change election results or the electors at their convenience. We all know that when Trump demanded to invalidate the 2020 election results, the biggest complaint from elected officials including Pence was, that they couldn’t do it because it was against the law or their duties. So, republicans are working to change that. The provision about removing the counties election supervision autonomy and centralized it, is another way to legalize cheating. That will allow them to get away with changing voting hours, places, drop boxes or anything that do not favor republicans in majority black counties, while leaving everything intact in majority white counties. We all know that sometimes the election is decided by some specific counties that they don’t like. The media and democrats are concentrating on voter supression when the real deal is that this law was very carefully drafted to mislead the public and to change the course of elections.

Heather McGhee, I respect her dearly but she missed one crucial point as it relates to the decisions of certain corporations to take a stand against this anti democratic bill: so many corporations made it a point to post Black Lives Matter slogans and other messages of solidarity on their web pages. And have reaped the benefits from strengthening their appearance of social responsibility this way. The reason why corporations, who benefit greatly from GOP legislations by the way, decided to say something was because of the public pressures from organizations such as Black Voters Matter, and Black corporate execs who demanded a just response. This was not solely because corporations met with employees on the inside and evaluated what strategic calculations would work best as Bill surmised. Protestors and civil rights activists noted that these big businesses should not be able to “claim” solidarity for the basic human rights of Black people, but when the rights of Black people to vote are under attack, they are silent. No possible way.

He is punishing the city of Atlanta for switching cities for the All-Star game!
Businesses are predominantly owned by African-Americans in Atlanta.
All that revenue to local businesses are now being taken away and put in a city that’s predominately white owned businesses in Denver???
If the MLB wanted to make a statement do it after the game with something else so the money can go to the African-American community! MLB just cost them millions and millions of dollars! That game was going to help a lot of people in the black communities!

No guys! Get to THE most devious portion of the Georgia voter reform bill. It’s the section of the Bill that allows the Georgia legislature to take charge, and disallow ANY counties’ ballot count if they don’t approve of the outcome. That’s what stealing an election looks like. Senate Bill 1 (and 4) must be passed to preserve a foundation of fundamental citizen rights, with regard to our Federal system of elections. We must have consistency without interference from the “ usual suspects”. Bill your guests are simply dithering around the edges, and missing the power grab of anti-democratic agency, from many state officials around the nation, who would rather wreck our democracy to maintain primacy. This is where the outrage should be obvious to all.

Taking the Sec of State off the state election board. Reducing number of drop boxes. They admitted that the laws are in response to Rudy Gs lies about election fraud. The legislature expanded absentee ballot access in the last session then changed it again to make it more restrictive. No water or food to people waiting in line to vote except by poll workers and you can bet the legislature is going to try and reduce number of voting locations in neigborhoods of color to make the lines even longer than they already are.

Georgia’s statewide primary sees voting machine malfunctions, absentee ballot delays, and long lines, especially in largely minority areas. The Supreme Court under Roberts gutted the Voting Rights Act! The Supreme Court needs term limits! Also, Georgia Gov. Kemp needs to be RECALLED ASAP! Now there is a boycott against Delta, Bank of America, Home Depot, and Coke with their home bases in Georgia! This caused those companies to denounce the awful racist bills! There are 360 restrictive bills introduced in 47 states! Corporations that support Republicans will have to have boycotts against them to have Republicans kill those bills! Texas is next!

There are also some pretty bonkers things the National Review has to say about voting and democracy where they just come out and say, ‘we don’t necessarily want every person to vote, unless they have all the facts’, which is almost be funny given their relationship with facts, especially if Trump is involved. Either you believe in America and everything it stands for, or SAYS it stands for, or you don’t. And the GOP does not. Forget what they are saying and look at what they are DOING.They have been more concerned about acquiring and holding power, at all costs, than about legislating and governing and getting on with the business of running the country FOR THE PEOPLE, not lobbyists and their own pocketbook.

I’ll tell you what’s wrong with this law! the most problematic part is the transfer of powers from the secretary of state and the county election boards to the state legislature. this change will make it much easier for republicans to tilt the election in their favor and even overturn a close race. while you could not conjure up 12k vote as trump wanted, this change certainly makes it very easy to disqualify said number of vote in order to flip the election result. brad raffensburger may have had some integrity but I can tell you the republican members of the Georgia state senate are nothing but fascist ideologues that would seek to do this!

It’s ALL about letting ANYONE that walks across the border to vote, then Hell, they can just go back when their done if they wish..but I have to stay and pay the taxes for all the goods they were GIVEN by the rotten, thieving politicians using the left and right paradigm to DIVIDE US ALL! Bill, did you and the CEOs of those companies read the Georgia bill?
    Georgia Economy
    and Income for Blacks
Yes Major League Baseball has moved its All Stars Game out of Georgia to protest the new Georgia voting law. The laws are said to prevent black people from voting. Yet I noticed in the MLB statement it never gave specifics or said how the law prevented black people from voting?
The MLB as a private company has the right to move its game, but I have some questions as a Georgia citizen who is black.
    1. How does the new Georgia law prevent blacks from voting in the state, be specific?
    2. Did the MLB accurately read the law, all those lawyers you employ?
    3. When you decide to take the game out of Georgia, did you realize the economic impact it had on black citizens of Georgia?
    4. Did you realize that folks that work the Atlanta ball park are black and will miss that income?
    5. Since the MLB is so concerned about voting restrictions, will they boycott New York, New Jersey, “Delaware” and Denver Colorado that have more restrictions on voting?
    6. Why did you move the game from Atlanta where 51% population is black to Denver where the population is 80% white and 9% black?
    7. Does the new federal bill from congress, HR 1 that proposes to take over voting law for the nation, taking away any voting control of states have anything to do with why you make accusations about a voting law in Georgia with no evidence presented?
    8. Will the MLB discontinue doing business with the CCP, Communist Chinese Party because of China’s “no voting policy”?
    9. Just one last question, to Mr.. Robert Manfred president of the MLB. Will you cancel you membership at the August National Golf Club, because of Georgia’s new voting laws?
    Hypocrisy at its finest!
And no I am not a Trump fan.
    Statement To All
Don’t let accusative oppressive cancel culture let you think you are helping people, when you actually creating another oppression and injustice.
You are witnessing the soft bigotry of low expectations from the MLB.
Your kind and gentle thoughts for discussion are welcome

You might be onto something really important here that could explain why the Republicans are losing their minds because of Coke not siting with them because they assumed since Coca-Cola is Red it was a Republican drink. Typical left BS, from people who didn’t even bother to read the rules. CNN and MSNBC, and good ol’ Bill Maher here, have been regurgitating lies about voting times, and not being able to give water to people standing in line.. The truth is that, they’ve expanded the voting times (…and NOT limited voting for anyone), and I’ve worked in past elections, and the rules clearly state, that people who work the elections, cannot wear political pins/shirts/etc….propping up a particular candidate, and that anyone who is supporting a particular candidate, must be so many yards, away from the voting facilities. The lying Dems, were known to have had people giving out water to people in lineups, telling them to vote for Biden. They’re all like ‘Crooked Hillary’ (..don’t know the difference between the truth and their lies).

Are we to believe that minorities are incapable of retrieving something as basic as an identification card? I reject that premise.
