The song they sang in this segment could be the theme song for the
Republican Party, most all the members of which seem to operate on the
“I’ve got mine, too bad for you” philosophy, including refusing to provide
a helping hand up to those in need based on the often faulty assumption
that the other person’s disadvantage is solely due to their own mistakes
and lack of effort. The message of the song seems to be totally at odds
with the viewpoint Saunders claims is held by the main character in the
book, who gets ahead in life, but then looks back to help those who did not
    get ahead.

This is why I like Colbert. He can interview someone I’m completely
unfamiliar with and it will still be interesting.

Saunders reaction to “That’s disappointing, George,” was hilarious – he
almost flew off the couch XD

many animals can be touchy feely, only we are rational like we are. Surely
a mixture of both is what we need. They aren’t mutually exclusive.

One of the greatest contemporary American writers. Funny guy. And a damn
great songwriter. This dude has it all!

(I wish they could have talked about “Tenth of December”, though. That book
    is amazing!)

Excuse my musical ignorance but what did he put along the side of his
    guitar?

I really liked his idea of ’empathy on training wheels’ and was waiting for
him to elaborate and address Stephen’s question but tbh I have no idea
where he was going with the bob thing…
