Many online banks allow you to use the ATM for free for a few transactions
per month, since you can’t physically withdraw from brick and mortar
branches. Sometimes local banks and credit unions as well. Vote with your
money and shop around if having trouble with your service.

I had no idea ATM fees were so extreme in the States!! Woah, in New Zealand
it’s like max $2 for another bank and absolutely free with your bank. You

People don’t own money, a dollar bill is just a paper representation of a
concept. That paper you hold has no value on it’s own. All banks do is
provide a service by lending you that paper representation – how much they
can charge you for that service, is their own decision it seems.

To everyone outside the United States of America: Yes, banks are legally
allowed to charge transaction and/or handling fees with the use of ATMs,
some banks only make that provision for ATMs operated by competing banks
and some do so for every ATM. Yes, it is stupid. Yes, the banking system is
idiotic. Yes, some people actually accept this, or don’t even care about it
    at all.

Yes, Bernie Sanders is likely the only presidential candidate that has the
best interests of not only the USA, but of the entire world on his mind…
and no, I don’t think he’ll be elected, not when everybody gets so caught
up in labeling over what the fuck these people are actually saying. Oh,
also, the political system is rigged and the vote of the regular citizen is
meaningless outside of local elections. The US is still most definitely the
best country in the world though, because… umm… movies! TV shows!
    McDonald’s! What the fuck ever.

This is why I don’t like Bernie. He basically complains about anything
possible, and acts like making the government three times as big and
putting us into even more dozens of trillions of dollars into debt will
    solve all of these problems

I don’t know why anyone would pay ATM fees. In the years since they
started, I could count on two hands, the number of times I’ve paid an ATM
fee. Y’all know you can take out cash in the grocery store when you pay as
a debit, or at most big stores like Target or Walmart? Okay? I agree that
it’s horrible to charge the fee, so that’s why you refuse to pay it.

You’re paying for the convenience. Instead of going to your personal bank,
you’re able to withdraw a fairly large sum of money within seconds. Sure, I
don’t like paying $4, but I’m paying for a service rendered by the
    out-of-network bank.

Don’t worry, I feel the Bern like anyone else but this is kind of a silly
    point.

A lot of people seem to be saying stuff like “Oh, well this only applies if
you’re too dumb to use your own bank’s ATM”, but they’re ignoring the cases
that Bernie is trying to address here. If you’re in a low-income household,
odds are you use the bank within walking distance from you because you
can’t afford a car and don’t want to take a bus to get cash. But let’s say
you’re out and need to pay cash at the grocery store because their debit
system is down, or need to buy a lunch at work because you forgot yours. In
those cases, you will go to the nearest ATM because you need the money
right away, whether or not it’s in the same network. Paying 4 or 5 dollars
on top of the expenses you already have when you’re in a desperate
financial situation is the difference between a decent meal or another pack
of instant noodles, and it adds up over time.

ATM fees if you do not use YOUR bank’s ATM. That bank will charge your bank
a fee for using their machine and your bank passes it along to you. Why
would the ATM bank allow you to take money from their machine for free
while you don’t even have a deposit with them.
