All this while the U.S. killed three times the amount of people with training, testing or space flight between 1957 and 1991.
The soviets won almost every single first because they invested a big chunk of their GDP in science, while the U.S. invested it in their military and industry. Now China invests in science and infrastructure, while the U.S. still invests mainly in their military.
