ReplyI’m glad Bob opened up about the Olympics. NBC has always drove me nuts with sob stories and frequent commercials. Honestly, the opening and closing ceremonies are the only things that truly interest me.
ReplyDuring the 1992 Olympics the Canadian synchronized swimmer was awarded the silver medal and the US swimmer the gold. A judge immediately said I punched in 8.7 in error I meant to enter 9.7, which would have given the Canadian the gold. American commentators stated that the rules are the rules the US swimmer was the rightful winner.The Canadian swimmer was shown graciously saying she was happy with silver. Very Anerican slant, I can imagine what Costas would have been saying if the US had lost the gold the same way.
Oh wait I didn’t have to imagine. The next segment was about how the officials screwed the Americans out of the 1972 gold mens basketball medal. Did the US team graciously accept the silver? No the team refused to accept their medals and here we are still whining about it 20 YEARS later. But the Canadian should be happy with her silver. Almost 30 years later and I remember my disgust at the US media not even attempting to be remotely balanced.

Then I lived in NZ and got to see how other countries present the Olympics – 24/7 coverage of ALL the events, with very little commentary. Soooo much better!

I boycotted the Olympics when they were in Russia and I probably will boycott this years if they take place. Japan is not ready and they should be postponed to next summer.

It has been rife with corruption, enriching only large corporations, politicians, and of course the corrupt and grifting IOC.
