the biggest thing i think people don’t understand about science is that it isn’t about being right. the art of science is making educated guesses, testing out experiments, and reinterpreting those guesses depending on the outcome of the test. it is really the art of being wrong and learning.

I know the last sentence is supposed to be a joke, but i have to pick it up anyway:
The laws of physics on a macro level (newtonian mechanics, thermodynamic, electrodynamic etc.) are still valid and true. Im sorry all you physics slackers, you still need to listen to your teachers in class 😉

Actually scientists from fermilab, in this experiment, didn’t smash particles, also they didn’t find new particle.Muon g-2 experiment measured precession of the magnetic moment of muon. And for now there isn’t any discovery, they findings are at 4.2 sigma level. The gold standard is 5 sigma. So there is just a strong hint that we can have some new physics lurking just beyond the corner.

The laws of physics as we know them are not suddenly going to be debunked. This new evidence just suggest there’s something else that hasn’t been taken into account yet. It’s certainly a hint that there might be a fifth force or quantum field, but it’s definitely not a refutal of known laws of physics like the speed of causality (light), etc.

It’s easier said than done, people should realize that many guns are, in essence, a flat piece of metal bent into a shape. We should learn from the EU, where the parts of a gun that are regulated are called the “pressure” parts, most significant being the barrel itself, without which, obviously, one doesn’t have much of a gun.

The muon information is slightly incorrect. We have know about muons for decades. There is a QED measurement we can do on particles like electrons and muons that measures the how particles interact with each other. The calculations produce very consistent results for electrons but for muons the results can be slightly off from what we would expect to see given all the know particles and interactions. So far the slight differences in the muon results could be explained away by expected random fluctuations based on the probability distribution of the results. Fermilab’s results from the measurement are getting us closer to concluding that the fluctuations aren’t from random chance but they are a result of an interaction with an undiscovered particle.

Discovering the new particle or interaction won’t turn physics on it’s head but it will add more depth to our current understanding. This is similar to how Einstein’s theories expanded our knowledge of our already know laws from Newton. Newton’s theories still work, but Einstein’s are more robust and give us a greater understanding of the universe.

I genuinely hate to be that guy, but as a physicist , it makes me cringe when news news outlets like the one shown in the video cover scientific discoveries completely incorrectly. Scientists definitely did not discover a muon that breaks the laws of physics… muons were discovered in 1936. What they found was that, in a magnetic field, the muon interacts with virtual particles in a way that none of the current theories of physics can describe, which would indicate that there is some type of particle- boson or fermion- that we haven’t discovered yet. Scientists are super excited because, if it’s a boson, there is a chance that they might have discovered a fifth force of nature. Currently, there at a 4.2 sigma confidence (1/40,000 chance that it’s just a statistical fluke), but more research might lead to a 5 sigma result (1/3,488,555 chance), which is the accepted level of an official discovery. Again, I seriously hate to be that guy, but what that outlet said was totally wrong. Credit to Trevor though, most of what he said was spot on- except for the smashing particles part.

After watching a video from you, a video from a screen!, through a computer!. I mean we manage, so many things. So many things I can’t even start xD, but my point is, next time, don’t give anti-science people more reasons to go against science, and second, what the discovery implies is different from what you said. We could be discovering “new physics”. Meaning in addition to what we know.

So if they come across teachers who think they know everything and considers what he knows to be the “ultimate truth,” they should take everything these teachers say with a grain of salt.

The muon result is very exciting but it’s characterization here is incorrect – muons have been known for a long time, and they are behaving strangely here because of unknown interactions, not because they themselves are weird. Also we should certainly wait a bit longer to confirm that the theory is correct. Although if the theory (the way we estimate certain quantities) is incorrect, that would be exciting too, cause it would also indicate some unknown interaction.

The report on muons is highly misleading. We know about muons for a long time, a similar experience had shown the same thing 15 years ago, they just recreated it. And the movement of the muons does not match the calculation only of their model. Other team have try other models and they match better with what happened. No particule broke the laws of physics, some scientists just made bad assumptions in their calculs and an experiment proved that to them, it’s how science works.
