Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Must Be Addressed

Published on March 18, 2021

In the wake of a series of shootings that claimed the lives of 8 people in the Atlanta area, including 6 women of Asian descent, James Corden looks at the alarming rise in violence targeting the Asian community, and how hate speech and action are linked. And it’s well past time we all address the hate that is at the center of these crimes.

By calling Covid-19 “Chinese virus” or “Kung flu”, there is no doubt that Trump is directly responsible for the hate crime and attacks on Asian Americans in the past year.

I am Vietnamese and American. I am a first generation immigrant to two wonderful parents who fled war and came to America for a better life as most of our stories go. I am NOT a virus. Standing by my fellow brothers and sisters in the Asian community and hopefully it can bring change for the better. I also am sending love to the 8 families who are emotionally impacted by this tragedy that should not have happened ❤️ thank you for speaking on this James, but I must add that the gunman isn’t a run of the mill gunman; he is a white supremacist that murdered innocent lives.

I don’t think you can talk anyone into murdering someone. And if you believe the guy who commited these murders (you’d expect he’d know better than most people why he did it), they had nothing to do with racism or misogyny. The truth in this case doesn’t really fit the narrative though, does it?

People are ridiculous. Instead of focusing on if this virus was intent or not, we should be working hard to eradicate it so we can start moving back to normalcy. Investigate later. This virus just shows exactly where people’s minds are at ! They are blaming Asians for the virus and losing so much because of them when they’ve always hated Asians !! How can you hate someone for being born into a life they hadn’t chosen ? How can you hate someone for loving every inch of themselves !why are the racists and xenophobes soo mad !

As an Asian American public school teacher, I’ve recently started sharing some of my stories and experiences with my students and in return, many of my students have as well.

Children have asked me if I had the virus in my classroom. Children have told me to make them Chinese food. Children have called me Bruce Lee. Children have pulled their eyes back and have said “Ching Chong” to me.

As a student I’ve dealt with a lot of racist comments and behavior but I’ve never said anything to anyone my whole life, I just felt upset inside.

As an educator, I know this is learned behavior from adults in their life, media, and the society around them. I’ve learned that while I am sad from these comments and experiences, the best thing I can do is teach them about my experiences and culture, and use my voice to help them understand my story, and perhaps similar parallel stories of others.

It’s not part of the curriculum, but we’re having some of the most memorable and impactful conversations we’ve ever had. I’m fortunate to be in the position I am to work with the next generation and I’m hopeful for their future based on our conversations.

Thank you for using your platform to share these voices, it’s helped me share mine with my middle schoolers as well!

I’ve started a YouTube Channel to help students with math remotely. I’m hoping to monetize the channel and use 100% of the proceeds to pay low-income students of color to tutor younger low income students of color that look like them.

I believe representation matters, and the more POC we have in education sharing their stories and educating our diverse children, the better off we are.

The solution is to immigrate more Asians into America. Simple as that.
Blacks went through the same thing when they were a tiny minority surrounded by whites. Now they are a very sizable chunk of America so people don’t do it as much to them but do it to Asians since there are still so few of us in America. INCREASE IMMIGRATION OF ASIANS TO AMERICA to solve the racism problem.

Hating doesnt mean we have to hurt or take someone else’s life, nobody is entitled to do that. Hitler was racist, he hated jews, believed that another religion is evil. Look what racism can do, millions of innocent families were brutally killed.
We cannot eliminate hate, when there is love, there is also hate; one cannot exist without the other. Same with good and bad, pain and happiness, God and evil, heaven and hell, etc. but hurting people out of racism is unforgiveable. Earth wasnt built for a certain race.

Just can’t understand what the blacks’ thinking of, obviously what they should do is to stand with the asian americans together against the racists, not to be one of them. They are just losing their friends, losing sympathy, finally will gain nothing. Maybe the blacks need more powerful and visionary leaders of their own. BTW, the asian americans also should get united, no united=no power, no power=no equality.
