In Sweden, it takes at least 2 years of practice before you can own a gun legally.. And you have to be registered at a gun club. Recommended practice is at least 1 hour a week and you have to past a test to continue beeing a member and you have to partake in local competitions… So, who in Sweden has the time for ownership of a gun…? Not very many! So, 98% don’t bather…

Edward the Longshanks (The villain in Braveheart) was very clever.

He made it illegal to play any other sport but archery on Sunday to ensure that everyone was trained with a bow. Which made conscripting and training the infamous British longbowmen so much easier.

Might be able to apply something similar to our culture?

That argument holds no water 21 states now have constitutional carry means civilians can carry a gun without a permit or any training if they so choose but most get training. More states will pass it soon and about 40 plus states civilians carry pretty regularly

Comparing what I see from our police here to US policing…, there certainly appears the be a lack of uniformity nation wide.., training, deescalation, stepping-back and taking stock.., slowing stuff down….
Our cops training to give them selves time, work with people, seems that US standard police conversation is full, instant and absolute compliance … with the person handcuffed face down.., for anything..? Nuts

So maybe instead of defunding police, we should increase funding for training, streamline our police force with much better, yet fewer officers, and beyond that, have police officers be a responding force, instead of a proactive force. Do away with stupid traffic infraction stops and insipid drug possession laws. Let’s have a police force focused on bringing criminals to justice, rather than having to deal with Billy Bob Brubake and Sandy Sue Brubake and their Christmas day argument. And for those who don’t want the police in the inner city, your wish will be granted. Ladata Twanda Bonita Kansas Jones, aka: Peaches, and D’mircus Demetrius L-manda Jones, aka: Baby Daddy, will be on their own as well.

We in America could learn some things about policing and training from our friends in England, Germany, Japan and even Canada. In my opinion they should be more involved in community matters, even walking or riding the best more. More training is needed especially in a ever changing environment. Also being on probation should be at least 18 to 24 months. Police Officers should be trained with this motto: ” Treat Other’s Like You Would Want To Be Treated.”

As someone who has trained cops I can’t agree with her premise. That many cops are woefully untrained.

However it’s not the weapon that they are untrained with. It is the many other facets that exist within the world of law-enforcement and not within the world of self-defense.

Tactical retreats for example. Where are you simply wait for back up or defuse the situation until you have back up. Until there are five of you and one of them.

They are untrained and non-lethal tactics.

Effective methods of restraint. Controlling a situation.

You’re sort of implying that the reason people keep getting killed is because they are not effectively trained in the use of a lethal weapon. That’s incorrect. They are not effectively trained in the use of lethal force.

When you are defending yourself the threat is coming to you. That’s easy. But when you are a police officer and you are interjecting yourself into situations your discernment regarding what is a situation that justifies lethal force must be exponentially more acute.

But if I may be so frank I would wager that this woman was never put in a situation where she had to make that decision.

Because I’m telling you it’s a very intense moment.

Now granted as a police officer you signed up to put your life on the line. As a civilian defending myself I did not that’s why it’s different for police and civilians.

But this is a two-way blind street. Because you have onlookers who don’t seem to understand that just because a person was an arm did not mean your life is not in danger. It did not mean they were not a threat. And then on the adverse you have police officers who do not understand it simply because a person is not complying or is resisting they are not a lethal threat.

What it boils down to ultimately is that while these kinds of decisions are split second if a police officer makes an error they must be punished for it the same as a civilian would be in a self-defense situation. The burden of requirement that I as a civilian would have to meet for shooting someone is and should be much lower than that have a police officers. Because I can’t call for back up. I’m not wearing A belt at my waist line equipped with varying degrees of weaponry. I don’t have a radio. I have a cell phone yes but it’s not the same. The reason it’s not the same as because the second you touch the button on your radio you are speaking to everyone that is on that frequency at all ranges. So the minute you say “officer needs assistance at“ helps on the way. You don’t have to send a text and wait on them to answer or make a phone call and hope they answer. They heard you.

Now granted I’ve only seen three minutes of this interview but tragically this is a situation that gets very reduced and oversimplified.

However she and I agree on the initial premise that being cops are woefully under trained. Not with their weapons. Because any idiot can pick up a gun learn how to use it and learn how to defend themselves with it in terms of using it in a couple of hours. But it takes development of muscle memory through repetitious high stress training to develop some of the skills these people need.

This is really valuable and insightful. It’s true that we ask police to do everything, and the essence of their job often includes danger and dealing with the worst human behaviors all the time. It feels like this is the time for a total rethink and redo on policing. Much like teachers, we place enormous blame on these people when things go wrong without the right support structures to help them succeed. This doesn’t absolve police when they obviously abuse their power. But we also need to acknowledge how hard that work is and figure out what they need to make it better. And same for teachers. More humanity in our response. Less blame.

Police aren’t meant to alleviate the mega-problems of a degenerating, deteriorating society. They’re overwhelmed and stressed out in these big cities where every day they have to deal with the results of multi-generational poverty. Some react by becoming deterministic cynics, others, like the gun-for-a-taser woman are simply so high-strung that she couldn’t think straight. Poverty is what’s really behind all this, not “evil” cops. Are we ever going resume the War on Poverty, or are we just going to jump on a slogan bandwagon like BLM and ride around making mean faces while the cameras are rolling?

I would like someone to let me know how many cases where the person who died in a police shooting was because of just an innocent bystander minding their own business compared to the overwhelming number of blacks killed by blacks (still don’t see much BLM activity for Officer Dorn)? And how many of these cases where someone died would not have been an issue if they had not resisted arrest? Media scaring people to be afraid of the cops ain’t helping much either. Signed a Christian, Libertarian person of color (who has been stopped by the cops a few times and lived to tell about it). Trump (or DeSantis) 2024.

The length of training required to be a cop in America is lower than what is required to be a cosmetologist. That’s a sad and frightening fact. Also, since police work started as a blue-collar job, it never really professionalized. It is still a workforce that is for the most part not very educated. Roughly 70 percent has no college degree and like Rosa Brooks said, they are thrown into a job after just a couple months of “training” and with some powerpoint slides as remedial continuing education every couple of years.

Bill you make uniquely insightful observations on topics about which you’re clearly well informed. But you’re flatly ignorant on policing. This guest’s “revelation” is a laughable misrepresentation. Police officers use training guns throughout the academy, including practical exams they have to pass. The “two weeks” is a transition to a real gun they’ve already learned how and when to use. And if they don’t pass state standards, they get extra training or are dropped.

WE NEED TO DO THIS NOW or are you scared of boys in blue customes?:
*1. ABOLISH QUALIFIED IMMUNITY* for all cops
    *2. OUTLAW ALL POLICE UNIONS*
*3. Switch Internal Affairs (IA) to a Citizen Review Board (CRB)* (with no current or retired cops or their relatives/friends on the the Board)
*4. DEFUND ALL PRESENT AND PAST POLICE PENSIONS* (hey they never really worked for it)
*5. REFORM & Nationalize THE POLICE* (Camden, NJ did this years ago and it worked! Defund and rehire new obedient officers!)
    6. Officers found guilty of knowingly engaging in criminal acts while under the badge (murder, extortion, battery, assault, menacing, narcotics distribution, etc.) will be automatically be sentenced to the maximum jail time under the law.
    7. Officers fired or dismissed due to illegal actions or other misconduct should be barred from serving in any law enforcement nationwide – you can’t simply shuffle problem officers from one jurisdiction to the next (see the murderer of Tamir Rice as a notable example).
    8. No knock warrants are abolished.
    9. Civil Forfeitures are abolished.
    10. Officers who are found guilty of the murder of citizens will have their pensions seized to recompense the aggrieved victims.
    11. Only highly trained SWAT are allowed to carrie pistols/long guns/guns/rifles/etc
    12. Police officers should be subject to psychological evals in six months intervals (or as needed and unannounced) by independent professionals and have access to therapy for themselves and their family also as needed.
    13. Apart from the biggest of major jurisdictions, all police departments will henceforth be demilitarized – no more APCs, tear gas cannister launchers, full tac gear, etc.. They are all to be liquidated. If you can’t do the job without all this offensive gear, the you don’t need the badge or the gun. This isn’t Call of Duty.
    14. Police Academy training will be far more rigorous, and trainees will be paid a small stipend to attend that at least 8 month to a year of training. Training for police of citizens should be equal to or greater than that afforded to military trained to kill enemies.
    15. Police officers should be from the municipalities they intend to work in.
    16. Threats of arrest should be made felony arrestable offense.
DO IT! or are you sceeerd of boys in blue customes?

A cop has to assume that most encounters may involve a hidden gun and any escalation could end badly very quickly cos at the end of the day the cop wants to go home to his wife and kids. The bottom line is you always follow the policeman’s directions and don’t do anything stupid. If you feel it is a false stop/arrest then contact a lawyer. There should be strict conditions for owning a hand-gun and assault style rifles should be banned.

Go to the front office of an inner city school and watch how parents yell at clerks, teachers and then admin…. demanding this or that for thier child. Or after their child physically hurt a teacher or students, screaming in denial. I’ve seen it man times. And the staff is supposed to stand their and take it.
Cops are asked do an almost undoable job…no amount of training can keep a human from not personalizing , not reacting to daily verbal abuse, physical abuse, seeing the worst in humanity and not reacingt at some point. I’ve seen seasoned teachers lose it on a kid after being F’bombed and disrespected…Except for a few all of us have a breaking point.

Without excusing any of the recent awful acts of what…, racism, incompetence, poor training, I would like to highlight the uniqueness of the USA cops situation of fearing for their lives at every traffic stop or pursuit on foot. In the end the stupidity of the 2nd amendment bites back in the form of a violent society, where it’s not unthinkable to be afraid for your life in these situations that would be a lot less dangerous in any other country. But hey, that’s the way you like it, isn’t it?
Do you really believe that the right to carry makes for a better, freer society? Empirical evidence comparing current USA Democracy status and the others countries with solid democratic institutions prove you wrong.

Along with this is the need for more Social Workers to handle the ever rising mental health issues in this countries populace that is rapidly increasing. It’s almost like every time a police officer does the wrong thing and all the platitudes about “more training” or “better training” come out, nothing actually happens and they are still inadequately trained. When they are spending big on military-style equipment but don’t think that the lives of those they are supposed to protect and serve are worth enough to properly train their staff, why shouldn’t the police be defunded? Right-wingers are supposedly about small government and less government waste but they seem very keen on large police forces and have no regard for the money being wasted on toys by those police and the lives wasted as a result.

How many times have you heard that a soldier got out then decided they wanted to become a cop. Almost like an adrenaline junkie looking for action, rather than wanting to serve and really protect the public?
Think Andy Griffith, the sheriff of Mayberry. No gun, no attitude, no ego, and try to be a friend to everybody.
I am not saying that all cops are like that, but there seems to be quite a few of them out there with attitude.
They can’t be all things, in all situations. We really need to rethink this protect and serve thing.
    You have a finder-bender….
You don’t need a person with a gun!
If you caught speeding, you don’t need a person with the gun to give you a citation!
Much like a meter maid you can be ticketed for the fine, that you can not to choose to pay or you get served with A warrant to appear in court.
If you are homeless and on the street, you don’t need a gun, you need some help.
If you are acting crazy on the street, you need a medical professional to help you.
If the bank is evicting you from your home, you need the help of a social-worker, not a gun.
If your home gets broken into, you need an investigator, not a gun!
If your child runs away, you need a social worker or counselor, not a gun!
Laws can be changed. If you get caught shoplifting and they send an investigator and you refuse to go with them, you get charged with resisting arrest, doubling your problem, then it’s time to get a lawyer, your going to jail.
A few few simple changes could make a world of difference!
It shouldn’t be that hard to figure it out.
Before you respond, give it a little thought.
Maybe you can think of a few yourself.
This could be a very interesting project to see who gets some of the best ideas. It could even be worth your time.
Let’s try to keep it civilized and see if we can come up with a solution that could make all the difference.
    Good luck and best wishes!

There are a lot of good police out there doing a difficult under trying circumstances but blind Freddie can tell you that there is a need for reform for how policing is done in the United States. I’m an Australian and in the 1980’s and early 1990’s my state (NSW) had the most corrupt, bigoted, apathetic, and morally bankrupt force in Australia. It took a Royal commission into corruption, a clearing out of the many rotten apples, and a total reform from the ground up, from recruitment and training and application of the law on the best, right up to the boardroom level where policy is made and implemented. Most of the old guard was ousted (the old head kickers and the ones that took bribes) and they went about totally rebuilding the entire police service of NSW. Recruits now have to complete tertiary qualifications in policing prior to enrolment as well as meet physical, psychological, and ethical standards. They also recruit from a broad section of the community, not just heterosexual Anglo Saxon males, but from all sections of the community to better reflect our society and to relate to the public. Indigenous recruits are especially encouraged so as to have people better equipped to deal with cultural sensitivities as well as send a message to the Aboriginal community that police are not their enemy (as traditionally it has been the case).
There are so many facets to how policing has been reformed that it’s difficult to cover in a comment section of a youtube video but the general point is there is a way that reform can be implemented and work… but it’s got to be with community support. I’m sure the good coppers out there are absolutely gutted every time there’s a George Floyd or a Breonna Taylor or the many, many, many incidents of excessive force, racial profiling, corruption and abuse of power.
I recognise there are unique problems that American society has that isn’t as prevalent in Australia, such as guns, high level of homelessness, drugs, etc, but that just means that as a society you need to pull together and hammer out a solution. We can’t expect police to be society’s broom. A lot of the work load that’s being foisted upon them is unfair and they are ill equipped to deal with and that’s what makes cops burnt out and feel unappreciated and underpaid.
America has to come at this problem with a multifaceted approach by not only law reform, but drug reform, gun reform, and reform in how the mentally ill and homeless are treated. Until those problems are addressed and you keep using cops as a bandaid for a solution that needs surgery, society is always going to be sick.
One other problem I’ve noticed is the number of combat veterans who become police. That might sound good on the surface, someone with military training who is disciplined and knows how to use a firearm makes perfect sense… but combat and policing are using vastly different skill sets. Policing is deescalation and apprehension whereas combat is neutralisation. I’m not saying don’t recruit veterans, just be extremely selective in who you employ and remember the skills required are not always transferable.

If anyone can eventually figure out and perfect policing in America they will have accomplished something truly amazing. The problems with hiring, training, and maintaining a police department is a struggle in every state. If you were forced to come up with a reason why some departments and/or cops are plagued with problems it comes down to you get what you pay for.

There are a massive number of individual law enforcement agencies in the United States and I would not be surprised to learn that a significant number have little to no standards. I have known more than my fair share. You can live in a state where your State Troopers have a lengthy hiring process with high standards, a strict and lengthy military style boot camp academy, a well designed post academy field training program and a lengthy strict probationary period but at the same time this same state will have many other police departments that have little to no standards.

Pretty much all of the police departments in my state are not that hard to get a job with. Simple application, simple agility test, simple written exam, basic background check and a short 3 month academy followed by about 3 months of being with a field officer and you are good to go here is your AR-15 and take home car. Outside of the State Troopers who run their own academy all the other law enforcement agencies in my state rely on a single police academy to quickly produce new recruits and once you are certified you can simply bounce around departments, especially those smaller one’s that have a high turnover rate. Graduate the academy but then told you are not being retained because your field officer(s) has determined that you are not suitable to continue and they will usually let you resign because a resignation is so much easier to process than termination. Almost all facing such termination willingly submit their resignation because they too realize there is a benefit to avoiding being fired. Private sector does the same thing. So you quit and keep your academy certification and now it’s off to one of the more desperate poorly paid departments who can’t afford to be as picky but at least you still got your badge and gun.

I really don’t want to diminish her experience but she was a reserve officer and it’s not the same as full time. Shaquille O’Neal and Steven Seagal did the reserve police officer stint. She literally did it as a research project, but she is correct when she says law enforcement firearms training is short and simplistic. Not too long ago a major police department handed new recruits their gun and shield immediately. From day one in the academy they were wearing a uniform and a badge and carried their gun to and from the academy. They were handed a gun and told try not to blow your foot off while going through the academy. Eventually this stupidity was changed to what is referred to as gun and shield day. This is a day or two before graduation and graduation comes after slightly more than 6 months of academy training. The firearms training in the academy is approximately 3 weeks and outside of those with military experience a lot of recruits have never fired a gun and yes they too require that everyone needs to re-qualify by going to the range one day every 6 months during their career. It’s not hard to show up and put 50 rounds in a piece of paper in a safe and controlled environment. This is one of the biggest reasons why a lot of rounds are discharged when officers eventually find themselves in a gun fight. There really isn’t a lot of ways for a police academy to truly teach real life. Even the military has tried to do their best to prepare soldiers for a time when they might actually experience combat but there is no perfect way to artificially recreate the danger, fear, and adrenaline that comes from someone who is legitimately trying to kill you with a weapon.

Here’s a fact about being a police officer. The best weapons you can have in the field can not be issued because they are common sense, strong nerves, and the ability to effectively speak to people and too many people at every level of law enforcement lack one or all of these necessary skills. Can’t walk around nervous, can’t believe that you can say anything to anyone, and you need to have common sense. We all know people who think they have tons of common sense when they have none and those kinds of people make for bad cops. Solid people skills get the job done. Here’s another fact. There are cops who want nothing to do with other cops they work with because they know they should not be on the job but can’t do anything about it. I’ll give you a true story. I knew of a police officer who was mentally challenged and I don’t mean people thought he was nuts. This person was so obviously operating at the mental level of a child that his commanding officer had him sent to the department medical unit to be evaluated and they did in fact diagnose him as having the mental capacity of a child. The rumor I had heard was he had the maturity of a 9 year old and that was spot on. The CO basically told the doctor that he needs to be dismissed from the job but the doctor informed him that this diagnosis was not enough to be let go. This is a true f’ckin story! I could tell you very specific details that occured and eventually ended this scary career before someone got hurt or killed but I am truly afraid that someone would read this and know exactly who I am talking about because it was so messed up. Maybe the real scary part is the fact that they didn’t fire him but instead had enough issues with his job performance that it placed enough pressure on him to resign. I also have other deeply disturbing stories of people who were not right for law enforcement and their careers did eventually come to an end but only after unnecessary loss of life but I think I made my point.

Good luck trying to fix the problems because at the end of the day it’s a problem that has no known or easy fix. This woman being interviewed has an incredible resume but I can guarantee you she can’t fix the problems. You want to fix it by acting like a child and imagining that by defunding and doing away with police is the answer go ahead but that will replace one set of problems with something truly scary. You’ll so love survival of the fittest as you wonder why people didn’t come together in perfect love and harmony.

The reason the Ian was being self aware about ‘3 white folks at the table speaking’ is because …historically + presently many convos about “race” sans “non-whites” tend to make a wrong turn, and are often tone deaf. But he’s right in saying that it’s okay to talk About “Race” with or without the usual targets present.

In the USA Police are set up to fail. That failure often gets passed down to the poor and non-white. Which infers that the issues are at least somewhat rooted in Race + Socioeconomics. Before they’re cops most folks grow up Segregated and are probably biased, prejudiced, and racist towards Black people – even some “Black” people may feel a way. That bias gets exacerbated with the uniform and gun, because of the State sanctioned Power. The Unions and Qi puts a force field around a self induced American problem.

Until people stop justifying the use of force as bad training or ‘implicit bias’ and start calling it what it is… sadists racists cops… these murders are never going to stop. Most of the times a cop pull a gun and kill somebody it started with an illegal stop, profiling or simply a cop that woke up with murder in his or her mind and that is no mistake, that is premeditated. Hmmmm. And why is it our police officers are expected to be all tose things….social workers, mediators, psychologists? Maybe because we in the US have cut funding for mental institutions, and closed thousands of mental health facilities nationwide? Could that be a reason? Instead of a police officer trying to work out a domestic dispute, they bring in an ombudsman or psychologist that is trained in family councelling, and go back to their job. Stopping the violence in the moment is their job…solving the social issue isn’t. And the funding i have seen for police forces seems to be focused on new physical tools. Maybe we need to invest in the human capital more. Training. Hiring support staff like councellors not just for the public they deal with, but for the officers as well. Just a crazy thought.

Blacks in the United States are making life very difficult for cops. Cops get called in on complaints of kids with guns, and when the cops arrive the kids take off running. It’s dark outside, and the cops are chasing the kids, and the cops can make out the gun that the kid is holding. The kid finally stops, quickly throws the gun behind a fence and spins around and puts his hands up. The cops do not have enough time to process that the gun was quickly thrown behind a fence, and it’s dark out…they cant see. Cops have a right to protect themselves from getting shot. Tell the blacks to stop running away when a cop says to stop. Failure to Comply is killing these blacks, nothing else. It’s their own fault.

Police are being deliberately squeezed within a vice grip because politicians, MSM, and medical frauds like Dr. Fauci keeps adding fuel to the fire. Eventually, all the sane and reasonable officers will simply give up in disbelief.

I worked in the Hungarian police training system. Most cadets were country kids who wanted the stable income and early retirement the police force offered. Their training was brief and didn’t cover emotional management to any real degree. The cadets were used as political pawns by a wannabe authoritarian government. Not altogether dissimilar.

Yea, I’m sorry, I don’t accept this bullshit excuse that “we ask cops to be [too many] things!” No we, don’t. Cops are told to go out there and arrest anyone who might be doing something wrong or who doesn’t give you the god-given respect you brave heros deserve. They’re not hired for their intelligence or character, they’re not trained well, and their “blue line” is just a chip on their shoulder they’re proud to defend at all costs.

Cops SHOULD BE trained to recognize a social situation that doesn’t need a militaristic response, and they SHOULD BE trained not in how to use their guns, but in how NOT to use them. Then maybe we all wouldn’t have to keep making excuses for one “bad apple” after another who had a gun slapped in their hand, military gear thrown on their backs and were then told to “enforce” the laws because the world is crashing down around you and it’s up to you to save us all..

The training of police officers is important and expensive which is why they give extra points for the Entrance exam to xmilitary. And most police districts rely upon that source of training. The problems we are witnessing today aren’t new; they were built into the American criminal “justice” system or adopted as acceptable policing practices. It’s not just properly trained officers; psychological testing/vetting are required for policing a complex society. In a society bound by the rule of law, accountability isn’t contingent upon ethnicity, social, or income status.

While driving around the city, with the cameras rolling, when a call would come in, they would flash a caption, in the bottom of the screen, referring to whatever crime was in progress. One time, the cops were just driving, then they notice a black man, just walking on the side walk. The caption pops up as, Suspicious activity. I said to my buddy. WTF! The guy was doing nothing wrong. That is the problem with police in America. They see a black man, and automatically assume, he’s up to no good. Change has been needed for a very long time.

When I was 18 , I was driving my first brand new car , a cop stopped me while I stopped on the road looking at the map , he asked for my ID and searched my body all over me , I didn’t do anything wrong . I’m an asian America. I was sexual harassed by this cop but I kept silent all my life now that I’m in my early 50’s I’m a doctor , I have my own medical facilities , I have seen so much Asian harried going on , I no longer want to keep silent about what I experienced. In addition , while I was in the college, I was with my classmates sitting in the car driving back home , we stopped at gas station , a female cop came up to me to ask my ID , I refused to give her and asked her why did she ask for my ID , how would I know if she was a real cap because I didn’t do anything wrong , we were only there to get some gas and some food . She slapped my face hard and told me how dare I questioned her and spoke to her that way . Now I have my own facilities and I have 50 staff working under my facilities , I have been working hard and contributing my whole life , paying tax , cooperate tax as well as tax for all my full time staff , . We even had to be forced to give donation to policemen when they knock my door and they also do that to my neighbors . I can only say policemen’s salary are paid by our tax but they don’t appreciate us and take everything for granted as they are just bunch gangsters but with license . They don’t do much for us , no justice for all color . They never did for Asian American and they try to pretend they forgot Asian American history how first Asian / Chinese Americans came to United state in 1820 which is 150 years ago , how they helped to build this country in the first hit they were “ Tortured “ by many other colors and got killed by police and how they have not been supporting Asian American except taking our money and tax . We no longer will keep silent . We are too kind to them and if we continue letting them using God and bible to take advantage of us with God’s words to ask us to forgive them each time after they ignored their duties , violations from their wrong behaviors towards innocent citizens , it’s actually our fault to allow them to take advantage of us and reinforce their negative behavior towards to us to be continued . I’m just too kind and have been contributing my life to help our community and hire all kind people including white , Latino , black and only a very few Asian Americans, I recall I used to say this while I was a child “ I Pledge of Allegiance of United States of America… ..for which it stands one nation under God .. invisible, liberty and just for all “. It sounds to me so ironic now after I got older grin what I have experienced after all . Justice for all ?? Never did , never is and never will unless we speak out and stand up and fight for our justice unless we all copy and do exactly how African Americans did to get attention from everyone and media & social media to report huts , days to get public trials , and Thousands of hundreds of protesters fighting and protesting waking on the street to fight for black live matters is what Asian Americans and Latino need to do . That’s how we can make some of them to pay attention to what they did to us by Sexual harassing us, attacking , killing by others . Don’t ever let those who use God and bible to continue taking advantage of us . God will never ask us to forgive them unless they admit they were wrong and sinners in front of God and rest of us to ask forgiveness but no one ever did for what they did to us since 150 years ago until what we have been experienced recently . Justice for All ? How ironic for the rest of world up see the way how our government had been treating us . Freedom / liberty/ justice for all ???? Those are only for selected people .

“Qualifying” twice a year isn’t as easy as most people think. It’s actually fairly rigorous. And if you fail to qualify, it has fairly serious consequences…like your lively hood for instance. That said, I have certainly seen officers that are great with their weapon but, much more importantly, stupid in dealing with people. Often, You won’t need that gun if you can calm down the situation verbally. I have seen incredible examples of the de-escalation of a potentially serious incident by some very capable officers. No one hears about those incidents in the paper or on the news…because it was resolved peacefully.
A cop, these days, as Bills guest alluded to, needs to be a Counselor/psychotherapist as well as sufficiently trained in weapons. IF being a cop was so easy, why do there always seem to be shortages on city departments? There are always 2 sides to an argument…don’t be so quick to judge.

I would like to point out that the two weeks she is referring to is weapons handling and marksmanship, NOT use of force training, which is the hotly debated issue today. Departments typically spend months training on use of force through a combination of legal studies and scenario testing.

I like Bill Maher, but this kind of false equivalency and misinformation is exactly what he was referring to in his video “Strife of the Party.” This former officer should know better than to suggest more marksmanship training to resolve controversial use of force…

And they are trained to think of anyone that they meet in the process of their day is to be seen as an enemy, a threat to their life. Cops not draw sooner, shoot sooner, taze sooner, beat sooner, brutalize sooner. They are trained by the police unions to ‘everyone’ as a threat. Their lives are more important than the public’s.

The Chauvin defense keeps saying ‘a *reasonable* officer’. You can not call an officer that is trained to think that everyone they encounter is a threat to their lives a ‘reasonable officer’, or even a reasonable human being. You call them what they are: A loaded weapon, waiting for go off. Police union trained officers are the largest threat to human life when a police officer is involved. Such a jaundiced view of the public they are meant to serve is poisonous.

Its not like they are hitting and killing innocent bystanders watching from roofs or shooting themselves in the arm because they dont know how to handle and aim the firearm. Based on the number of people who die in police shootings, they dont have issue USING their firearms, so I think the length of firearm training is a red herring. The issue isnt in the actual USE of their firearms, its WHEN they should use their firearms. They should be getting more classroom training on de-escalation tactics, phycology etc.

So how does defunding police rectify this alleged problem? Gun training on the range has nothing to do with the issues that are highlighted by our media and politicians. It’s all about split-second decision making — how to proceed when someone resists arrest, the media never talks about how these deaths are almost always are the result of a lifelong criminal resisting arrest.

I started my career in 1986 and retired in 2014. In my retirement I teach behavioral analysis to Police Officers. The truth is our training is unforgivably inadequate and yes that is the biggest issue. There is a problem in LE and we are lying about it. Its not racism, or violent tendencies. It is that we have cops who have no clue what they are doing. There is two reasons for that. One is they are idiots and the other is that even those with the aptitude do not get enough training. You would think that cops who have no idea what they are doing would not last long but there is a way for them to thrive and that is by sucking up to the bosses. In other news what’s wrong with the police is what’s wrong at your work, except we have guns. This is why defunding the police will obviously make everything worse because the first thing to go when you cut budgets is training. I believe that since you can’t be a cop until 21 we should create a new college degree called Police Sciences that teaches you everything you need to know to be a cop. From extensive legal training to repeated use of force training. With cultural diversity through immersive programs. Have the students spend time with the myriad of communities in this country. Its too long of a subject to go into in these comments but you have to understand that the perception of threat is in our brain stem, while the part of the brain that realizes the threat is gone is in our conscious mind. the Subconscious mind is 100;s of millions of time faster and smarter. So training the brain to not act instinctively takes a lot of time. It has to be done but we have to understand it takes extensive reprogramming of the brain. This training will go on for 3 years, then you do an academy, followed by FTO and probations. Upon passing probation you have a Bachelors of Science in Police Science with continuing training from there.

The next thing is we have to get rid of the one cop car. Cops should work with a partner of their choosing. That way they can act as a team rather then individuals. Ever wonder why all 5 cops shoot one guy with a knife? Because they are each having a direct encounter with the knife wielder and aren’t trained to rely of each other. Putting a cop out by themselves is setting them and possible suspects up for failure. It makes the suspect more likely to fight and the cops more likely to need deadly force.

Finally cops should work an assigned beat and they should be oriented to that beat before they ever work in it. That orientation should be riding with a senior person in that beat and being driven around to meet the various community leaders.

But none of that occurs in a defunded police world. Instead it just gets worse and life for everyday Americans will become a crime infested hell hole which I think is the plan.

    Reply
  • Jason Faulkner 1 year ago

Double their pay … triple their training … mandatory bodycams … harsher penalties for crimes than non-cops (due to breach of public trust) … make them get out of the car and walk the beat more … and lets have all police recruits possess two of the below three things: Parenthood (empathy), a college degree (work ethic), or at least be age 26 (full frontal lobe maturity). Serve and protect the taxpayer (i.e, the employer).

So it means the social workers are to blame for not doing their job properly, the teachers are to blame for not doing their jobs properly and parents are to blame for not doing their job properly etc.
It comes down to what type of society you want and America has been very comfortable with letting Police be all of the above because it’s easier for someone else do do the dirty work and when things go wrong it’s only ONE group to blame.

When people say that Police isn’t the most dangerous job, I wonder how that is determined. I am sure some police work is more dangerous than other, and presumably the work would be more dangerous if they’d shoot a lot less people. I am a bit disappointed in that sound bite as it is quite logically fallacious, on the same level as striking down voter protection laws because evidence shows that voting rights is no longer under attack (due to the existence of the very thing that is about to be stuck down).

The real “dirty little secret” about cops is that police departments are run by city councils. City councils hire and fire police chiefs, city government cuts the officer’s paychecks, the city council sets policies and procedures for the department.

If a city council has been promising police reform since the riots of 1968, and nothing has changed, the problem isn’t the police. Voters need to fire the city council, and elect someone with different ideas.

Maybe voters should even consider voting for a different party than the one that’s been promising Hope and Change for a half-century, delivering only hope, and short-changing them.

Why is the thin blue line not about blue uniforms anymore?
Why are they all wearing black hats and backed by riot gear.
    For years now.
I remember when they stopped wearing blue.
    Is it fashion?
Police departments supposed to care about their men looking cool?
