In Sweden, it takes at least 2 years of practice before you can own a gun legally.. And you have to be registered at a gun club. Recommended practice is at least 1 hour a week and you have to past a test to continue beeing a member and you have to partake in local competitions… So, who in Sweden has the time for ownership of a gun…? As someone who has trained cops I can’t agree with her premise. That many cops are woefully untrained.
However it’s not the weapon that they are untrained with. It is the many other facets that exist within the world of law-enforcement and not within the world of self-defense.
Tactical retreats for example. Where are you simply wait for back up or defuse the situation until you have back up. Until there are five of you and one of them.
They are untrained and non-lethal tactics.
Effective methods of restraint. Controlling a situation.
You’re sort of implying that the reason people keep getting killed is because they are not effectively trained in the use of a lethal weapon. That’s incorrect. They are not effectively trained in the use of lethal force.
When you are defending yourself the threat is coming to you. That’s easy. But when you are a police officer and you are interjecting yourself into situations your discernment regarding what is a situation that justifies lethal force must be exponentially more acute.
But if I may be so frank I would wager that this woman was never put in a situation where she had to make that decision.
Because I’m telling you it’s a very intense moment.
Now granted as a police officer you signed up to put your life on the line. As a civilian defending myself I did not that’s why it’s different for police and civilians.
But this is a two-way blind street. Because you have onlookers who don’t seem to understand that just because a person was an arm did not mean your life is not in danger. It did not mean they were not a threat. And then on the adverse you have police officers who do not understand it simply because a person is not complying or is resisting they are not a lethal threat.
What it boils down to ultimately is that while these kinds of decisions are split second if a police officer makes an error they must be punished for it the same as a civilian would be in a self-defense situation. The burden of requirement that I as a civilian would have to meet for shooting someone is and should be much lower than that have a police officers. Because I can’t call for back up. I’m not wearing A belt at my waist line equipped with varying degrees of weaponry. I don’t have a radio. I have a cell phone yes but it’s not the same. The reason it’s not the same as because the second you touch the button on your radio you are speaking to everyone that is on that frequency at all ranges. So the minute you say “officer needs assistance at“ helps on the way. You don’t have to send a text and wait on them to answer or make a phone call and hope they answer. They heard you.
Now granted I’ve only seen three minutes of this interview but tragically this is a situation that gets very reduced and oversimplified.
However she and I agree on the initial premise that being cops are woefully under trained. Not with their weapons. Because any idiot can pick up a gun learn how to use it and learn how to defend themselves with it in terms of using it in a couple of hours. But it takes development of muscle memory through repetitious high stress training to develop some of the skills these people need.Reply

This is really valuable and insightful. It’s true that we ask police to do everything, and the essence of their job often includes danger and dealing with the worst human behaviors all the time. It feels like this is the time for a total rethink and redo on policing. Much like teachers, we place enormous blame on these people when things go wrong without the right support structures to help them succeed. This doesn’t absolve police when they obviously abuse their power. But we also need to acknowledge how hard that work is and figure out what they need to make it better. And same for teachers. The length of training required to be a cop in America is lower than what is required to be a cosmetologist. That’s a sad and frightening fact. Also, since police work started as a blue-collar job, it never really professionalized. It is still a workforce that is for the most part not very educated. Roughly 70 percent has no college degree and like Rosa Brooks said, they are thrown into a job after just a couple months of “training” and with some powerpoint slides as remedial continuing education every couple of years.Reply

*4. DEFUND ALL PRESENT AND PAST POLICE PENSIONS* (hey they never really worked for it)
*5. REFORM & Nationalize THE POLICE* (Camden, NJ did this years ago and it worked! Defund and rehire new obedient officers!)
6. Officers found guilty of knowingly engaging in criminal acts while under the badge (murder, extortion, battery, assault, menacing, narcotics distribution, etc.) will be automatically be sentenced to the maximum jail time under the law.
7. Officers fired or dismissed due to illegal actions or other misconduct should be barred from serving in any law enforcement nationwide – you can’t simply shuffle problem officers from one jurisdiction to the next (see the murderer of Tamir Rice as a notable example).
8. No knock warrants are abolished.
9. Civil Forfeitures are abolished.
10. Officers who are found guilty of the murder of citizens will have their pensions seized to recompense the aggrieved victims.
11. Only highly trained SWAT are allowed to carrie pistols/long guns/guns/rifles/etc
12. Police officers should be subject to psychological evals in six months intervals (or as needed and unannounced) by independent professionals and have access to therapy for themselves and their family also as needed.
13. Apart from the biggest of major jurisdictions, all police departments will henceforth be demilitarized – no more APCs, tear gas cannister launchers, full tac gear, etc.. They are all to be liquidated. If you can’t do the job without all this offensive gear, the you don’t need the badge or the gun. This isn’t Call of Duty.
14. Police Academy training will be far more rigorous, and trainees will be paid a small stipend to attend that at least 8 month to a year of training. Training for police of citizens should be equal to or greater than that afforded to military trained to kill enemies.
15. Police officers should be from the municipalities they intend to work in.
16. Threats of arrest should be made felony arrestable offense.

I am a retired cop and yes most are good men and women who do and/or maybe sometimes make mistakes, but usually try to do the right thing everyday….and yes there are a small minority of bad cops who should not be working in law enforcement…..the cop in Minn. who shot the kid with her firearm instead of a taser should have never have been a cop in my mind…..in what I saw as a slightly dynamic situation she had a total brain overload and went full mental limp noodle mode…..she had 26 years as a cop and was no better then a 12 year old child with no training on that traffic stop……but I do not think she intended to shoot that young man…she just could not handle a medium stress situation ….Reply

If you are acting crazy on the street, you need a medical professional to help you.
If the bank is evicting you from your home, you need the help of a social-worker, not a gun.
If your home gets broken into, you need an investigator, not a gun!
If your child runs away, you need a social worker or counselor, not a gun!
Laws can be changed. If you get caught shoplifting and they send an investigator and you refuse to go with them, you get charged with resisting arrest, doubling your problem, then it’s time to get a lawyer, your going to jail.
A few few simple changes could make a world of difference!
It shouldn’t be that hard to figure it out.
Before you respond, give it a little thought.
Maybe you can think of a few yourself.
This could be a very interesting project to see who gets some of the best ideas. It could even be worth your time.
Let’s try to keep it civilized and see if we can come up with a solution that could make all the difference.

There are a lot of good police out there doing a difficult under trying circumstances but blind Freddie can tell you that there is a need for reform for how policing is done in the United States. I’m an Australian and in the 1980’s and early 1990’s my state (NSW) had the most corrupt, bigoted, apathetic, and morally bankrupt force in Australia. It took a Royal commission into corruption, a clearing out of the many rotten apples, and a total reform from the ground up, from recruitment and training and application of the law on the best, right up to the boardroom level where policy is made and implemented. Most of the old guard was ousted (the old head kickers and the ones that took bribes) and they went about totally rebuilding the entire police service of NSW. Recruits now have to complete tertiary qualifications in policing prior to enrolment as well as meet physical, psychological, and ethical standards. They also recruit from a broad section of the community, not just heterosexual Anglo Saxon males, but from all sections of the community to better reflect our society and to relate to the public. Indigenous recruits are especially encouraged so as to have people better equipped to deal with cultural sensitivities as well as send a message to the Aboriginal community that police are not their enemy (as traditionally it has been the case).Reply
There are so many facets to how policing has been reformed that it’s difficult to cover in a comment section of a youtube video but the general point is there is a way that reform can be implemented and work… but it’s got to be with community support. I’m sure the good coppers out there are absolutely gutted every time there’s a George Floyd or a Breonna Taylor or the many, many, many incidents of excessive force, racial profiling, corruption and abuse of power.
I recognise there are unique problems that American society has that isn’t as prevalent in Australia, such as guns, high level of homelessness, drugs, etc, but that just means that as a society you need to pull together and hammer out a solution. We can’t expect police to be society’s broom. A lot of the work load that’s being foisted upon them is unfair and they are ill equipped to deal with and that’s what makes cops burnt out and feel unappreciated and underpaid.
America has to come at this problem with a multifaceted approach by not only law reform, but drug reform, gun reform, and reform in how the mentally ill and homeless are treated. Until those problems are addressed and you keep using cops as a bandaid for a solution that needs surgery, society is always going to be sick.
One other problem I’ve noticed is the number of combat veterans who become police. That might sound good on the surface, someone with military training who is disciplined and knows how to use a firearm makes perfect sense… but combat and policing are using vastly different skill sets. Policing is deescalation and apprehension whereas combat is neutralisation. I’m not saying don’t recruit veterans, just be extremely selective in who you employ and remember the skills required are not always transferable.
Police officers should have to train for at LEAST 1 yrs STRAIGHT before being allowed on big city streets. And. There has to be a better way to WEED OUT THE RACIST COPS.Reply

If anyone can eventually figure out and perfect policing in America they will have accomplished something truly amazing. The problems with hiring, training, and maintaining a police department is a struggle in every state. If you were forced to come up with a reason why some departments and/or cops are plagued with problems it comes down to you get what you pay for.
There are a massive number of individual law enforcement agencies in the United States and I would not be surprised to learn that a significant number have little to no standards. I have known more than my fair share. You can live in a state where your State Troopers have a lengthy hiring process with high standards, a strict and lengthy military style boot camp academy, a well designed post academy field training program and a lengthy strict probationary period but at the same time this same state will have many other police departments that have little to no standards.
Pretty much all of the police departments in my state are not that hard to get a job with. Simple application, simple agility test, simple written exam, basic background check and a short 3 month academy followed by about 3 months of being with a field officer and you are good to go here is your AR-15 and take home car. Outside of the State Troopers who run their own academy all the other law enforcement agencies in my state rely on a single police academy to quickly produce new recruits and once you are certified you can simply bounce around departments, especially those smaller one’s that have a high turnover rate. Graduate the academy but then told you are not being retained because your field officer(s) has determined that you are not suitable to continue and they will usually let you resign because a resignation is so much easier to process than termination. Almost all facing such termination willingly submit their resignation because they too realize there is a benefit to avoiding being fired. Private sector does the same thing. So you quit and keep your academy certification and now it’s off to one of the more desperate poorly paid departments who can’t afford to be as picky but at least you still got your badge and gun.
I really don’t want to diminish her experience but she was a reserve officer and it’s not the same as full time. Shaquille O’Neal and Steven Seagal did the reserve police officer stint. She literally did it as a research project, but she is correct when she says law enforcement firearms training is short and simplistic. Not too long ago a major police department handed new recruits their gun and shield immediately. From day one in the academy they were wearing a uniform and a badge and carried their gun to and from the academy. They were handed a gun and told try not to blow your foot off while going through the academy. Eventually this stupidity was changed to what is referred to as gun and shield day. This is a day or two before graduation and graduation comes after slightly more than 6 months of academy training. The firearms training in the academy is approximately 3 weeks and outside of those with military experience a lot of recruits have never fired a gun and yes they too require that everyone needs to re-qualify by going to the range one day every 6 months during their career. It’s not hard to show up and put 50 rounds in a piece of paper in a safe and controlled environment. This is one of the biggest reasons why a lot of rounds are discharged when officers eventually find themselves in a gun fight. There really isn’t a lot of ways for a police academy to truly teach real life. Even the military has tried to do their best to prepare soldiers for a time when they might actually experience combat but there is no perfect way to artificially recreate the danger, fear, and adrenaline that comes from someone who is legitimately trying to kill you with a weapon.
Here’s a fact about being a police officer. The best weapons you can have in the field can not be issued because they are common sense, strong nerves, and the ability to effectively speak to people and too many people at every level of law enforcement lack one or all of these necessary skills. Can’t walk around nervous, can’t believe that you can say anything to anyone, and you need to have common sense. We all know people who think they have tons of common sense when they have none and those kinds of people make for bad cops. Solid people skills get the job done. Here’s another fact. There are cops who want nothing to do with other cops they work with because they know they should not be on the job but can’t do anything about it. I’ll give you a true story. I knew of a police officer who was mentally challenged and I don’t mean people thought he was nuts. This person was so obviously operating at the mental level of a child that his commanding officer had him sent to the department medical unit to be evaluated and they did in fact diagnose him as having the mental capacity of a child. The rumor I had heard was he had the maturity of a 9 year old and that was spot on. The CO basically told the doctor that he needs to be dismissed from the job but the doctor informed him that this diagnosis was not enough to be let go. This is a true f’ckin story! I could tell you very specific details that occured and eventually ended this scary career before someone got hurt or killed but I am truly afraid that someone would read this and know exactly who I am talking about because it was so messed up. Maybe the real scary part is the fact that they didn’t fire him but instead had enough issues with his job performance that it placed enough pressure on him to resign. I also have other deeply disturbing stories of people who were not right for law enforcement and their careers did eventually come to an end but only after unnecessary loss of life but I think I made my point.
Good luck trying to fix the problems because at the end of the day it’s a problem that has no known or easy fix. This woman being interviewed has an incredible resume but I can guarantee you she can’t fix the problems. You want to fix it by acting like a child and imagining that by defunding and doing away with police is the answer go ahead but that will replace one set of problems with something truly scary. You’ll so love survival of the fittest as you wonder why people didn’t come together in perfect love and harmony.Reply

I worked in the Hungarian police training system. Most cadets were country kids who wanted the stable income and early retirement the police force offered. The training of police officers is important and expensive which is why they give extra points for the Entrance exam to xmilitary. And most police districts rely upon that source of training. However the transition from military to civilian policing requires psychological training which has been hard to come by.Reply

Most occupations have very little training. I recall being rushed through a Pediatric Advanced Lifesaving course (mostly Powerpoint), and then the instructer literally gave us answers to the exam because time was up and she needed to leave. I’ve had various careers in my long life, and I notice more and more that managers at any company have no idea what exactly their employees do every day, and as an employee you are making it up as you go along. When I was 18 , I was driving my first brand new car , a cop stopped me while I stopped on the road looking at the map , he asked for my ID and searched my body all over me , I didn’t do anything wrong . I’m an asian America. I was sexual harassed by this cop but I kept silent all my life now that I’m in my early 50’s I’m a doctor , I have my own medical facilities , I have seen so much Asian harried going on , I no longer want to keep silent about what I experienced. In addition , while I was in the college, I was with my classmates sitting in the car driving back home , we stopped at gas station , a female cop came up to me to ask my ID , I refused to give her and asked her why did she ask for my ID , how would I know if she was a real cap because I didn’t do anything wrong , we were only there to get some gas and some food . She slapped my face hard and told me how dare I questioned her and spoke to her that way . Now I have my own facilities and I have 50 staff working under my facilities , I have been working hard and contributing my whole life , paying tax , cooperate tax as well as tax for all my full time staff , . We even had to be forced to give donation to policemen when they knock my door and they also do that to my neighbors . I can only say policemen’s salary are paid by our tax but they don’t appreciate us and take everything for granted as they are just bunch gangsters but with license . They don’t do much for us , no justice for all color . They never did for Asian American and they try to pretend they forgot Asian American history how first Asian / Chinese Americans came to United state in 1820 which is 150 years ago , how they helped to build this country in the first hit they were “ Tortured “ by many other colors and got killed by police and how they have not been supporting Asian American except taking our money and tax . We no longer will keep silent . We are too kind to them and if we continue letting them using God and bible to take advantage of us with God’s words to ask us to forgive them each time after they ignored their duties , violations from their wrong behaviors towards innocent citizens , it’s actually our fault to allow them to take advantage of us and reinforce their negative behavior towards to us to be continued . “Qualifying” twice a year isn’t as easy as most people think. It’s actually fairly rigorous. And if you fail to qualify, it has fairly serious consequences…like your lively hood for instance. That said, I have certainly seen officers that are great with their weapon but, much more importantly, stupid in dealing with people. Often, You won’t need that gun if you can calm down the situation verbally. I have seen incredible examples of the de-escalation of a potentially serious incident by some very capable officers. No one hears about those incidents in the paper or on the news…because it was resolved peacefully.Reply

I started my career in 1986 and retired in 2014. In my retirement I teach behavioral analysis to Police Officers. The truth is our training is unforgivably inadequate and yes that is the biggest issue. There is a problem in LE and we are lying about it. Its not racism, or violent tendencies. It is that we have cops who have no clue what they are doing. There is two reasons for that. One is they are idiots and the other is that even those with the aptitude do not get enough training. You would think that cops who have no idea what they are doing would not last long but there is a way for them to thrive and that is by sucking up to the bosses. In other news what’s wrong with the police is what’s wrong at your work, except we have guns. This is why defunding the police will obviously make everything worse because the first thing to go when you cut budgets is training. I believe that since you can’t be a cop until 21 we should create a new college degree called Police Sciences that teaches you everything you need to know to be a cop. From extensive legal training to repeated use of force training. With cultural diversity through immersive programs. Have the students spend time with the myriad of communities in this country. Its too long of a subject to go into in these comments but you have to understand that the perception of threat is in our brain stem, while the part of the brain that realizes the threat is gone is in our conscious mind. the Subconscious mind is 100;s of millions of time faster and smarter. So training the brain to not act instinctively takes a lot of time. It has to be done but we have to understand it takes extensive reprogramming of the brain. This training will go on for 3 years, then you do an academy, followed by FTO and probations. Upon passing probation you have a Bachelors of Science in Police Science with continuing training from there.Reply
The next thing is we have to get rid of the one cop car. Cops should work with a partner of their choosing. That way they can act as a team rather then individuals. Ever wonder why all 5 cops shoot one guy with a knife? Because they are each having a direct encounter with the knife wielder and aren’t trained to rely of each other. Putting a cop out by themselves is setting them and possible suspects up for failure. It makes the suspect more likely to fight and the cops more likely to need deadly force.Reply
Finally cops should work an assigned beat and they should be oriented to that beat before they ever work in it. That orientation should be riding with a senior person in that beat and being driven around to meet the various community leaders.

Where was she a cop? I had to complete8 weeks of training on my own dime before I could qulifi for a job as a seasonal summer LE Ranger with limited scope and close supervision. Things went well and they sent me to an 11 week ( which has since been expanded to just short of a year), training academy at their expense, every year a 40 hr refresher for LE which did not include the twice a year firearms recert, That was just the basic stuff, there was smmunitons training, wildland firefighting, EMT trainings and repeated physical fitness requirements. America is demonizing the men and women with the toughest job, police is not paid remotely enough for the shit they have to deal with day in day out. The public doesn’t respect them, society persecutes them. You already see, cities like Portland and Seattle (and I’m sure more and more by the minute) where police officers quit in waves, and there’s no way to recruit them, no shit, I would also NEVER want to become a police officer in America nowadays, particularly these type of cities. Cops can’t shoot. It’s not really a big part of their jobs. Mostly they just drive around and observe things. If you join the police because they have guns you’re going to be disappointed. OTOH, if you join because you like to drive a car all day, you’re going to love it.Reply
