In Sweden, it takes at least 2 years of practice before you can own a gun legally.. And you have to be registered at a gun club. Recommended practice is at least 1 hour a week and you have to past a test to continue beeing a member and you have to partake in local competitions… So, who in Sweden has the time for ownership of a gun…? Not very many! So, 98% don’t bather…

Edward the Longshanks (The villain in Braveheart) was very clever.

He made it illegal to play any other sport but archery on Sunday to ensure that everyone was trained with a bow. Which made conscripting and training the infamous British longbowmen so much easier.

Might be able to apply something similar to our culture?

That argument holds no water 21 states now have constitutional carry means civilians can carry a gun without a permit or any training if they so choose but most get training. More states will pass it soon and about 40 plus states civilians carry pretty regularly

The ones committing suicide are the ones that joined with good intentions, then found out how totally insane and non supportive the job is. The system they are hired to protect has been carefully and skillfully manipulated into a total no win scenario for all of us. Get rid of the capitalists and install honest Socialists and we will be on our way to parity.

Comparing what I see from our police here to US policing…, there certainly appears the be a lack of uniformity nation wide.., training, deescalation, stepping-back and taking stock.., slowing stuff down….
Our cops training to give them selves time, work with people, seems that US standard police conversation is full, instant and absolute compliance … with the person handcuffed face down.., for anything..? Nuts

So maybe instead of defunding police, we should increase funding for training, streamline our police force with much better, yet fewer officers, and beyond that, have police officers be a responding force, instead of a proactive force. Do away with stupid traffic infraction stops and insipid drug possession laws. Let’s have a police force focused on bringing criminals to justice, rather than having to deal with Billy Bob Brubake and Sandy Sue Brubake and their Christmas day argument. And for those who don’t want the police in the inner city, your wish will be granted. Ladata Twanda Bonita Kansas Jones, aka: Peaches, and D’mircus Demetrius L-manda Jones, aka: Baby Daddy, will be on their own as well.

We in America could learn some things about policing and training from our friends in England, Germany, Japan and even Canada. In my opinion they should be more involved in community matters, even walking or riding the best more. More training is needed especially in a ever changing environment. Also being on probation should be at least 18 to 24 months. Police Officers should be trained with this motto: ” Treat Other’s Like You Would Want To Be Treated.”

Police aren’t meant to alleviate the mega-problems of a degenerating, deteriorating society. They’re overwhelmed and stressed out in these big cities where every day they have to deal with the results of multi-generational poverty. Some react by becoming deterministic cynics, others, like the gun-for-a-taser woman are simply so high-strung that she couldn’t think straight. Poverty is what’s really behind all this, not “evil” cops. Are we ever going resume the War on Poverty, or are we just going to jump on a slogan bandwagon like BLM and ride around making mean faces while the cameras are rolling?

I would like someone to let me know how many cases where the person who died in a police shooting was because of just an innocent bystander minding their own business compared to the overwhelming number of blacks killed by blacks (still don’t see much BLM activity for Officer Dorn)? And how many of these cases where someone died would not have been an issue if they had not resisted arrest? Media scaring people to be afraid of the cops ain’t helping much either. Signed a Christian, Libertarian person of color (who has been stopped by the cops a few times and lived to tell about it). Trump (or DeSantis) 2024.

The length of training required to be a cop in America is lower than what is required to be a cosmetologist. That’s a sad and frightening fact. Also, since police work started as a blue-collar job, it never really professionalized. It is still a workforce that is for the most part not very educated. Roughly 70 percent has no college degree and like Rosa Brooks said, they are thrown into a job after just a couple months of “training” and with some powerpoint slides as remedial continuing education every couple of years.

Good Gawd; the USA is awash in hand-guns and assault weapons and you wonder why this shit happens all the time? No wonder cops are paranoid. A cop has to assume that most encounters may involve a hidden gun and any escalation could end badly very quickly cos at the end of the day the cop wants to go home to his wife and kids. The bottom line is you always follow the policeman’s directions and don’t do anything stupid. If you feel it is a false stop/arrest then contact a lawyer. There should be strict conditions for owning a hand-gun and assault style rifles should be banned.

Cops and pubic school teachers are the wall that separates the general population from the mass social dysfunction of US society. Go to the front office of an inner city school and watch how parents yell at clerks, teachers and then admin…. demanding this or that for thier child. Or after their child physically hurt a teacher or students, screaming in denial. I’ve seen it man times. And the staff is supposed to stand their and take it.
Cops are asked do an almost undoable job…no amount of training can keep a human from not personalizing , not reacting to daily verbal abuse, physical abuse, seeing the worst in humanity and not reacingt at some point. I’ve seen seasoned teachers lose it on a kid after being F’bombed and disrespected…Except for a few all of us have a breaking point.

It’s almost like every time a police officer does the wrong thing and all the platitudes about “more training” or “better training” come out, nothing actually happens and they are still inadequately trained. When they are spending big on military-style equipment but don’t think that the lives of those they are supposed to protect and serve are worth enough to properly train their staff, why shouldn’t the police be defunded? Right-wingers are supposedly about small government and less government waste but they seem very keen on large police forces and have no regard for the money being wasted on toys by those police and the lives wasted as a result.

If anyone can eventually figure out and perfect policing in America they will have accomplished something truly amazing. The problems with hiring, training, and maintaining a police department is a struggle in every state. If you were forced to come up with a reason why some departments and/or cops are plagued with problems it comes down to you get what you pay for.

There are a massive number of individual law enforcement agencies in the United States and I would not be surprised to learn that a significant number have little to no standards. I have known more than my fair share. You can live in a state where your State Troopers have a lengthy hiring process with high standards, a strict and lengthy military style boot camp academy, a well designed post academy field training program and a lengthy strict probationary period but at the same time this same state will have many other police departments that have little to no standards.

Pretty much all of the police departments in my state are not that hard to get a job with. Simple application, simple agility test, simple written exam, basic background check and a short 3 month academy followed by about 3 months of being with a field officer and you are good to go here is your AR-15 and take home car. Outside of the State Troopers who run their own academy all the other law enforcement agencies in my state rely on a single police academy to quickly produce new recruits and once you are certified you can simply bounce around departments, especially those smaller one’s that have a high turnover rate. Graduate the academy but then told you are not being retained because your field officer(s) has determined that you are not suitable to continue and they will usually let you resign because a resignation is so much easier to process than termination. Almost all facing such termination willingly submit their resignation because they too realize there is a benefit to avoiding being fired. Private sector does the same thing. So you quit and keep your academy certification and now it’s off to one of the more desperate poorly paid departments who can’t afford to be as picky but at least you still got your badge and gun.

I really don’t want to diminish her experience but she was a reserve officer and it’s not the same as full time. Shaquille O’Neal and Steven Seagal did the reserve police officer stint. She literally did it as a research project, but she is correct when she says law enforcement firearms training is short and simplistic. Not too long ago a major police department handed new recruits their gun and shield immediately. From day one in the academy they were wearing a uniform and a badge and carried their gun to and from the academy. They were handed a gun and told try not to blow your foot off while going through the academy. Eventually this stupidity was changed to what is referred to as gun and shield day. This is a day or two before graduation and graduation comes after slightly more than 6 months of academy training. The firearms training in the academy is approximately 3 weeks and outside of those with military experience a lot of recruits have never fired a gun and yes they too require that everyone needs to re-qualify by going to the range one day every 6 months during their career. It’s not hard to show up and put 50 rounds in a piece of paper in a safe and controlled environment. This is one of the biggest reasons why a lot of rounds are discharged when officers eventually find themselves in a gun fight. There really isn’t a lot of ways for a police academy to truly teach real life. Even the military has tried to do their best to prepare soldiers for a time when they might actually experience combat but there is no perfect way to artificially recreate the danger, fear, and adrenaline that comes from someone who is legitimately trying to kill you with a weapon.

Here’s a fact about being a police officer. The best weapons you can have in the field can not be issued because they are common sense, strong nerves, and the ability to effectively speak to people and too many people at every level of law enforcement lack one or all of these necessary skills. Can’t walk around nervous, can’t believe that you can say anything to anyone, and you need to have common sense. We all know people who think they have tons of common sense when they have none and those kinds of people make for bad cops. Solid people skills get the job done. Here’s another fact. There are cops who want nothing to do with other cops they work with because they know they should not be on the job but can’t do anything about it. I’ll give you a true story. I knew of a police officer who was mentally challenged and I don’t mean people thought he was nuts. This person was so obviously operating at the mental level of a child that his commanding officer had him sent to the department medical unit to be evaluated and they did in fact diagnose him as having the mental capacity of a child. The rumor I had heard was he had the maturity of a 9 year old and that was spot on. The CO basically told the doctor that he needs to be dismissed from the job but the doctor informed him that this diagnosis was not enough to be let go. This is a true f’ckin story! I could tell you very specific details that occured and eventually ended this scary career before someone got hurt or killed but I am truly afraid that someone would read this and know exactly who I am talking about because it was so messed up. Maybe the real scary part is the fact that they didn’t fire him but instead had enough issues with his job performance that it placed enough pressure on him to resign. I also have other deeply disturbing stories of people who were not right for law enforcement and their careers did eventually come to an end but only after unnecessary loss of life but I think I made my point.

Good luck trying to fix the problems because at the end of the day it’s a problem that has no known or easy fix. This woman being interviewed has an incredible resume but I can guarantee you she can’t fix the problems. You want to fix it by acting like a child and imagining that by defunding and doing away with police is the answer go ahead but that will replace one set of problems with something truly scary. You’ll so love survival of the fittest as you wonder why people didn’t come together in perfect love and harmony.

Bill is beginning to sound like an old curmudgeon. The reason the Ian was being self aware about ‘3 white folks at the table speaking’ is because …historically + presently many convos about “race” sans “non-whites” tend to make a wrong turn, and are often tone deaf. But he’s right in saying that it’s okay to talk About “Race” with or without the usual targets present.

In the USA Police are set up to fail. That failure often gets passed down to the poor and non-white. Which infers that the issues are at least somewhat rooted in Race + Socioeconomics. Before they’re cops most folks grow up Segregated and are probably biased, prejudiced, and racist towards Black people – even some “Black” people may feel a way. That bias gets exacerbated with the uniform and gun, because of the State sanctioned Power. The Unions and Qi puts a force field around a self induced American problem.

Until people stop justifying the use of force as bad training or ‘implicit bias’ and start calling it what it is… sadists racists cops… these murders are never going to stop. Most of the times a cop pull a gun and kill somebody it started with an illegal stop, profiling or simply a cop that woke up with murder in his or her mind and that is no mistake, that is premeditated. This problem is about the ulimited and unacountable power that we give cops, something that no other profession has.

Hmmmm. And why is it our police officers are expected to be all tose things….social workers, mediators, psychologists? Maybe because we in the US have cut funding for mental institutions, and closed thousands of mental health facilities nationwide? Could that be a reason? Instead of a police officer trying to work out a domestic dispute, they bring in an ombudsman or psychologist that is trained in family councelling, and go back to their job. Stopping the violence in the moment is their job…solving the social issue isn’t. And the funding i have seen for police forces seems to be focused on new physical tools. Maybe we need to invest in the human capital more. Training. Hiring support staff like councellors not just for the public they deal with, but for the officers as well. Just a crazy thought.

It’s dark outside, and the cops are chasing the kids, and the cops can make out the gun that the kid is holding. The kid finally stops, quickly throws the gun behind a fence and spins around and puts his hands up. The cops do not have enough time to process that the gun was quickly thrown behind a fence, and it’s dark out…they cant see. Cops have a right to protect themselves from getting shot. Tell the blacks to stop running away when a cop says to stop. Failure to Comply is killing these blacks, nothing else. It’s their own fault.

They’re not hired for their intelligence or character, they’re not trained well, and their “blue line” is just a chip on their shoulder they’re proud to defend at all costs.

Cops SHOULD BE trained to recognize a social situation that doesn’t need a militaristic response, and they SHOULD BE trained not in how to use their guns, but in how NOT to use them. Then maybe we all wouldn’t have to keep making excuses for one “bad apple” after another who had a gun slapped in their hand, military gear thrown on their backs and were then told to “enforce” the laws because the world is crashing down around you and it’s up to you to save us all..

In a society bound by the rule of law, accountability isn’t contingent upon ethnicity, social, or income status.

“Qualifying” twice a year isn’t as easy as most people think. It’s actually fairly rigorous. And if you fail to qualify, it has fairly serious consequences…like your lively hood for instance. That said, I have certainly seen officers that are great with their weapon but, much more importantly, stupid in dealing with people. Often, You won’t need that gun if you can calm down the situation verbally. I have seen incredible examples of the de-escalation of a potentially serious incident by some very capable officers. No one hears about those incidents in the paper or on the news…because it was resolved peacefully.
A cop, these days, as Bills guest alluded to, needs to be a Counselor/psychotherapist as well as sufficiently trained in weapons. IF being a cop was so easy, why do there always seem to be shortages on city departments? There are always 2 sides to an argument…don’t be so quick to judge.

And they are trained to think of anyone that they meet in the process of their day is to be seen as an enemy, a threat to their life. Cops not draw sooner, shoot sooner, taze sooner, beat sooner, brutalize sooner. They are trained by the police unions to ‘everyone’ as a threat. Their lives are more important than the public’s.

The Chauvin defense keeps saying ‘a *reasonable* officer’. You can not call an officer that is trained to think that everyone they encounter is a threat to their lives a ‘reasonable officer’, or even a reasonable human being. You call them what they are: A loaded weapon, waiting for go off. Police union trained officers are the largest threat to human life when a police officer is involved. Such a jaundiced view of the public they are meant to serve is poisonous.

Often they are tired. And often they are just scared. They don’t want to die either. So if you get in a tussle and the cop tells you to do something… you do it. That’s it.

Now if you’re stoned out of your mind and have a shit attitude then I don’t know what to tell you. Honestly I dont have a lot of sympathy for people like that.

Can we agree that its not the fact that police in the US dont know how to use their firearms? Its not like they are hitting and killing innocent bystanders watching from roofs or shooting themselves in the arm because they dont know how to handle and aim the firearm. Based on the number of people who die in police shootings, they dont have issue USING their firearms, so I think the length of firearm training is a red herring. The issue isnt in the actual USE of their firearms, its WHEN they should use their firearms. They should be getting more classroom training on de-escalation tactics, phycology etc.

First of all, which department was she in? Mayberry, or NYC? Big difference. 80 hours of good gun training just doesn’t equate to her narrative that a bunch of armed cops don’t know how to use their weapons. So how does defunding police rectify this alleged problem? Gun training on the range has nothing to do with the issues that are highlighted by our media and politicians. It’s all about split-second decision making — how to proceed when someone resists arrest, the media never talks about how these deaths are almost always are the result of a lifelong criminal resisting arrest.

I started my career in 1986 and retired in 2014. In my retirement I teach behavioral analysis to Police Officers. The truth is our training is unforgivably inadequate and yes that is the biggest issue. There is a problem in LE and we are lying about it. Its not racism, or violent tendencies. It is that we have cops who have no clue what they are doing. There is two reasons for that. One is they are idiots and the other is that even those with the aptitude do not get enough training. You would think that cops who have no idea what they are doing would not last long but there is a way for them to thrive and that is by sucking up to the bosses. In other news what’s wrong with the police is what’s wrong at your work, except we have guns. This is why defunding the police will obviously make everything worse because the first thing to go when you cut budgets is training. I believe that since you can’t be a cop until 21 we should create a new college degree called Police Sciences that teaches you everything you need to know to be a cop. From extensive legal training to repeated use of force training. With cultural diversity through immersive programs. Have the students spend time with the myriad of communities in this country. Its too long of a subject to go into in these comments but you have to understand that the perception of threat is in our brain stem, while the part of the brain that realizes the threat is gone is in our conscious mind. the Subconscious mind is 100;s of millions of time faster and smarter. So training the brain to not act instinctively takes a lot of time. It has to be done but we have to understand it takes extensive reprogramming of the brain. This training will go on for 3 years, then you do an academy, followed by FTO and probations. Upon passing probation you have a Bachelors of Science in Police Science with continuing training from there.

The next thing is we have to get rid of the one cop car. Cops should work with a partner of their choosing. That way they can act as a team rather then individuals. Ever wonder why all 5 cops shoot one guy with a knife? Because they are each having a direct encounter with the knife wielder and aren’t trained to rely of each other. Putting a cop out by themselves is setting them and possible suspects up for failure. It makes the suspect more likely to fight and the cops more likely to need deadly force.

  • Paul Danielson 3 years ago

Finally cops should work an assigned beat and they should be oriented to that beat before they ever work in it. That orientation should be riding with a senior person in that beat and being driven around to meet the various community leaders.

But none of that occurs in a defunded police world. Instead it just gets worse and life for everyday Americans will become a crime infested hell hole which I think is the plan.

    Reply
  • Jason Faulkner 3 years ago

Double their pay … triple their training … mandatory bodycams … harsher penalties for crimes than non-cops (due to breach of public trust) … make them get out of the car and walk the beat more … and lets have all police recruits possess two of the below three things: Parenthood (empathy), a college degree (work ethic), or at least be age 26 (full frontal lobe maturity). Serve and protect the taxpayer (i.e, the employer).

I am sure some police work is more dangerous than other, and presumably the work would be more dangerous if they’d shoot a lot less people. I am a bit disappointed in that sound bite as it is quite logically fallacious, on the same level as striking down voter protection laws because evidence shows that voting rights is no longer under attack (due to the existence of the very thing that is about to be stuck down).

The real “dirty little secret” about cops is that police departments are run by city councils. City councils hire and fire police chiefs, city government cuts the officer’s paychecks, the city council sets policies and procedures for the department.

If a city council has been promising police reform since the riots of 1968, and nothing has changed, the problem isn’t the police. Voters need to fire the city council, and elect someone with different ideas.

Maybe voters should even consider voting for a different party than the one that’s been promising Hope and Change for a half-century, delivering only hope, and short-changing them.
